Hi Julie, Is it you that wrote the Education Week article? If so, I'm wondering if you might be willing to do an interview with me for my blog expateducator.com. I was thinking that, since your resolution is to talk more positively about teaching, you could interview in March or April to talk about how that is going. Results? Good stories?

Anyway, if I have the correct person, please let me know.

I like your word parts jeopardy idea. :) Assuming you teach the vocabulary before playing the game, I was wondering if you have flashcards or quizzes?? Thank you.

Actually, I don't teach the words, although it's not a bad idea. I have used probably every different vocab program focused on word parts trying to find one that I like and that works--to no avail. This game was my attempt to show the students that they can figure out the words if they know the word parts and I use it as fun, but academic, time-filler when I need it. I coach them through the answers when they get stuck, but usually they "get it" without too much pre-teaching and I do start to see the light bulbs go on when they make the connections between the meanings of the words and the word parts. I always try to revisit the word parts, too, when we encounter them in our reading: "Remember, we saw this root in Jeopardy last week; can someone remind us what it means?"

I'll take a look at the different versions and see if I can come up with some supplemental activities--good for previewing or follow-ups. One of my New Year's resolutions is to post something new once a week on TpT...maybe this is where I'll start! :) Thank you!

I think you're referring to one of the exit slips. It just has a set of blank lines on it and I have the kids write the summaries of the chapters they read on those lines. It's one of the exit slips, not something additional. I don't have access to that file from this computer, but when I do, I'll let you know which page number the exit slip is on. I'm sorry I just saw this question tonight!

Hi. I like these exit slips. Can you tell me what the purpose of the 3, 2, 1 chart is?

Thanks,

I'm sorry I just noticed these questions. I use the 3-2-1 for a variety of purposes: Write 3 things you learned from the article, 2 questions you still have, and 1 connection you can make to it, for example. Or you can do other things based on your text--3 causes/2 effects/1 similar situation, 3 reasons you agree/2 reasons you disagree/1 most convincing reason, 3 facts, 2 opinions, 1 person who should read this. You can use it for vocabulary (3 words you don't know, for example) or for literary elements (2 examples of figurative language), or for recording details. I just did a Rachel Carson essay and I used it like this: 3 places DDT was found, 2 reasons we used DDT, and 1 surprising fact. Really, just think about what your goals are with the text and then you can adapt the chart to whatever your purpose is. Good luck, and I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner!

Hi,

I am a Speech Language Pathologist working in a High School setting. I am interested in the football game. Is that a game that can be played between 2 students?

Thank you for sharing your wonderful activities.

I don't see why it couldn't be played with two students. You might want to modify it a little or at least limit the word parts to the more common ones at first. Sometimes the more difficult word parts take a collective effort from the team, but there are usually a few students who, if given the opportunity, would play the whole round themselves!

Just be sure to click in the middle of the slides--right around or on the text--and the links should work just fine. Sometimes if you click on the outside of the slide it goes to the next in order rather than the answer slide. I'm glad you're enjoying it--and my other lessons!

Wow...I was the last person to ask you a question about another product! Sorry to be a a pain. Obviously, I love your stuff! I just downloaded the Odyssey jeopardy game and I am unsure how to use it. Could you give me a quick tutorial...? It seems awesome and I know my class will love it. Thanks SO much!

Love your exit slips product. Wonderful resource. I was wondering though, how do you use the one with the three boxes which decrease in size numbered 3 then 2 then 1...Looks interesting. Could you let me know? Thanks!

I use it in a number of ways. Sometimes I'll say, write three things you learned, two questions you have, and one connection, for example. Other ideas would be summary sentences, predictions, vocabulary words, character descriptions, facts, or opinions. You can customize it depending on the text--it's very flexible. Glad you like them...I use them all the time in my classroom!

Hello!
Good game...just got it this morning. I have two questions.
1. How do you get back to the money screen after a question is answered?
2. Are there any answer slides.
Thanks,
LisaJane

Click again on the answer slide (close to the words) and it will link back to the main board and you should see the questions you've already chosen are now blue and so you choose another white one. I did not do an answer slide; it would've been a good idea. You could print thumbnails of the slides and that way have an answer key in the meantime, but I think I will look into making one for future versions. Thanks for asking about it and I hope your students enjoy it!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Over the last 19 years, I have taught 7th grade through junior college English and reading and I am currently working as the literacy coach in a high school. The lesson plans that I share here could come from any of those grade levels and cover a variety of subject areas. With the push toward the Common Core, I have been focusing on helping the teachers at my school incorporate more reading, writing, and higher-order thinking into their lesson plans. I am reworking my TpT profile/lessons to align with this goal also. Thus, the creation of HOT Shot: Soar into the Common Core with Higher Order Thinking. However, despite the catchy-logo/title, I am now (and always will be) a teacher first! I assure you that the lessons you're purchasing on this site are lessons I have used successfully with students. I hope that your students will get as much out of the lessons as mine do.
