Good morning! I am a first grade teacher, formerly PK teacher. I just finished my masters in May (yea!) with a degree in Mind, Brain and Education – a subfield of education. The first program was started at Harvard by Howard Gardner and Kurt Fisher (if you haven’t read any of Kurt Fisher’s work on Skill Theory and you are interested in the cognitive processes involved in learning, you must read his work!)

Cut to the chase. When I moved up from PK to 1st I was shocked by my students’ lack of number sense. I spent an entire year and all last summer trying to figure out what was missing. In Nov I attended a workshop that on number sense. When I heard the presentation I recognized all the “big” names of the research I had been investigating. The workshop was a training session for an iPad app (Native Numbers). It seemed like a valid, robust app, but I am a skeptic and had to know: would this really work.

I am here to tell you that with the first skill set I saw every cognitive model of learning embedded in this app. I also realized that this app is more than a learning tool; it has built in formative and summative assessment as it is adaptive and levels up and down based on student performance and leads to mastery.

Now I am on a “mission” – everything we read tells us our students are lacking number sense. I believe this app is a fabulous tool to remediate those deficits. I have no vested interest in this app except that I am one of those people that has to solve problems and when I think I have found possible answers, I have to share that with others. Our kids are too important not to share---which is why I love reading blogs! I am asking for teachers to simply read the research and then try out the app and give me feedback---or give the feedback yourself to the developers. I am that convinced. I am not a salesman and I feel quite strange in this new role I have taken upon myself…but I have nothing to lose, or gain, except knowing that maybe we can have an enormous impact on our students!

If you have any questions, please e-mail me at tatergraderswife@yahoo.com Check out the app at www.nativebrain.com – you can find the background of the developers and read about the research behind the app. You can also watch a video on that site or go to these YouTube links:

Hi i visited your blog and love your kits however i do not know where to start. I have a daughter entering kindergarten in the fall. I homeschooled her for preschool and decided to do virutal home schooling for kindergarten. I want to start reading readiness this summer as to go into reading and writing sight words but i have no idea where to start. She knows most of the letter sounds so should i go strajght into a sight words kit or should i start at a kit with letter sounds to make sure she has those down? Im so confused, this is my first time doing any of this and just want to make sure shes learning correctly. Please help me!

It's great that she knows most of her letters and sounds. You will want to be sure she is now able to put the letters together to make simple consonant-vowel-consonant words (e.g. cat, top). So start putting the letters together to build words. If you are looking at the kits- the Short Vowels/CVC kit would be the next step. You can begin to introduce some simple sight words at the same time. Many of the sight words cannot be sounded out, so it can be confusing for our little learners. Be sure to read with her too. I picked up a few leveled readers at Walmart (Biscut Books) for my children and they loved them. Take a look at Walmart or at your local book store- there are usually leveled books. You can progressively work through the levels. For children entering kindergarten, having a good handle on letters and sounds and blending them together is the best thing. I wouldn't worry too much about the sight words until the sounds are solid. Hope this helps. Julie

I would certainly consider that but I'm not sure how to do that on TpT. I've considered bundling them, but my plan is to keep adding more and the file size is very large even as a single activity due to the amount of graphics. I'll try to figure something out this summer as there have been several requests for bundling. Thanks--sounds like a good summer project. Julie

The directions to play the game are in the manual. You have to be sure to glue them on the sticks as they are listed on the sheet or else it won't work well. Hello, I just have a question about the Swat game- do your kids play this game with partners, or a small group? I have not yet found a successful way to play it with a small group of children. Do you have any suggestions? When I lay out all the flies/words, and I call out a word, it's hard to tell who swatted it first when they all swat it at pretty much at the same time. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

Actually, I play this game in small groups (typically no more than 3 students) and we hand the swatter from student to student. I put velcro on the swatter and the flies and just have the students swat any words. They read the word that was picked up by the swatter. It seems really simple, but the kids really love it. Hope this helps.

You really can't correlate the phonemic awareness kit to a DRA level. Phonemic awareness is a foundational skill. If you are screening using the DIBELS Next, it would correlate to the First Sound Fluency assessment and the Phoneme Segmentation Fluency assessment. This kit is most appropriate for kindergarten and beginning to mid-first grade. Hope this helps. Julie

There is a range from 3-5 eggs per nest. Most letters have 4 or 5. The "e" has 3. There is no "x" because the /ks/ is not a beginning sound. Here's the count:
1 nest- 3 eggs
7 nests- 4 eggs
17 nests- 5 eggs
Hope this helps.

Hi! I'm a great fan of your products. I am trying to make a game with caterpillar clip art and I noticed your Creepy-Crawly Caterpillars. They are exactly what I've been searching for. Do you do your own clip art and do you sell any of it? I would love to work with this.
Thanks,
Christy

Starbright7 re: Easter Egg Matching- Beginning Sounds
Would you be able to make a set of these with numbers? I was thinking of having the numeral at the top, then that number of objects in the middle, and the number word written out at the bottom. For example - 3, three bunnies, and the word "three". I don't know if you do number activities though. I was just looking for 0-10. Thanks! :)

That's a great idea. I'm not sure I can get it done and posted before Easter though. I will try. Thanks for the idea-- right now I'm tending to focus on reading (first love), but I will start creating more activities for math as I'm getting more and more requests. Julie

The word families in the cookie sheet activities include: am, ad, at, ag, an, ig, in, ed, et, en, op, og, ub, ug and un. So there are 15 different word families. I'm thinking that you are getting the "6" from the volume. This is the 6th in a series of cookie sheet activities. Hope this makes sense. Let me know if I can help any further. Julie

Julie any chance you lived in Nashville, TN during 1989 - 1993? Any recommendations for working with 4th graders struggling to catchup with their peers on their phonics skills?

Nope--Michigan all my life. Sounds like you may have known someone by my name (Van Alst is my married name). If you go to my blog www.blog.maketaketeach.com I have a post under learning disabilties labeled my favorite resources for dyslexia. In that post are free phonics cards. The cards start from basic letters/sounds and go through the advanced phonics skills. You can start there with assessment. There is a book that goes along with the cards that describes intervention. That book is really helpful. Feel free to email me if you need other resources julie.vanalst@gmail.com
