Good morning! I am a first grade teacher, formerly PK teacher. I just finished my masters in May (yea!) with a degree in Mind, Brain and Education – a subfield of education. The first program was started at Harvard by Howard Gardner and Kurt Fisher (if you haven’t read any of Kurt Fisher’s work on Skill Theory and you are interested in the cognitive processes involved in learning, you must read his work!)

Cut to the chase. When I moved up from PK to 1st I was shocked by my students’ lack of number sense. I spent an entire year and all last summer trying to figure out what was missing. In Nov I attended a workshop that on number sense. When I heard the presentation I recognized all the “big” names of the research I had been investigating. The workshop was a training session for an iPad app (Native Numbers). It seemed like a valid, robust app, but I am a skeptic and had to know: would this really work.

I am here to tell you that with the first skill set I saw every cognitive model of learning embedded in this app. I also realized that this app is more than a learning tool; it has built in formative and summative assessment as it is adaptive and levels up and down based on student performance and leads to mastery.

Now I am on a “mission” – everything we read tells us our students are lacking number sense. I believe this app is a fabulous tool to remediate those deficits. I have no vested interest in this app except that I am one of those people that has to solve problems and when I think I have found possible answers, I have to share that with others. Our kids are too important not to share---which is why I love reading blogs! I am asking for teachers to simply read the research and then try out the app and give me feedback---or give the feedback yourself to the developers. I am that convinced. I am not a salesman and I feel quite strange in this new role I have taken upon myself…but I have nothing to lose, or gain, except knowing that maybe we can have an enormous impact on our students!

If you have any questions, please e-mail me at tatergraderswife@yahoo.com Check out the app at www.nativebrain.com – you can find the background of the developers and read about the research behind the app. You can also watch a video on that site or go to these YouTube links:

I know this was long, so thanks for reading. Please let me know if you have questions!!!

Super cute in the quick look...but after downloading your product, there are areas on the page that are blurred out. Could you please fix these areas or send me a copy another way?
Thanks!

Thanks for your free shape sort! I'm just wondering what you give the kids to sort. Do you give them the actual 3D shapes, or objects of those shapes? Thanks!
I would love to have your long a pack! Thanks!

vbiggs re: Animal Classification Pack- Describing 6 Animal Classes
I just purchased your pack and realized that the sentences in the Guess My Classification cards don't have a capital I at the beginning of them. I realize that this is probably an issue with the font selected, but I'm concerned that it will be confusing to my first grade students. Are you able to send me a version with the i capitalized on page 20 of the packet?

If so, my email address is vbiggs@fusd1.org.

Thank you!

Hi Ginni!

Thanks for purchasing the packet. I totally understand what you're talking about with the lowercase "i"s. I'll tell you what-- I'm off all this week for Spring Break, so let me work on it and I'll email you the updated version as soon as I finish. Have a great afternoon!

Hi There!

I'm so sorry you're experiencing some technical difficulties...I'm sure that's no fun! If you wouldn't mind trying 2 things, and then if those don't work, I'll give you one more suggestion! First, make sure you have the latest Adobe viewer. I know sometimes certain files don't work well if you have an older version. Also, if you're on a Mac, try a PC. Also, it is sometimes finicky :) Finally, try scrolling all the way through to see the other pages. Some pages are "watermarked" with the red stamp, however, the other clean copies are in there too!

If that doesn't work, click up top under "My Purchases". On the top right corner, there's a box where you can contact TpT team and they can help further. Please let me know if you're still having problems later, and hopefully we can find a way to help. Thanks!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Hello Teachers! My name is Jillian, and I'm a 2nd grade teacher. I have been teaching 2nd grade for 2 years now. Before that, I've been a tutor, a substitute teacher, and a student myself! I love the classroom, and I love playing around on the computer. Creating useful tools is a knack that I have fallen into, and I might add-- it's rather fun! :)

MY TEACHING STYLE

Fun with boundaries! I'm sure after my team reads that, they'll disagree...somehow I've been tagged as the most strict in 2nd grade. I do, however, love my kiddos and love to have a good time! I enjoy everyday, and try to have fun in all lessons I teach!
