I am teaching computer class for our K/3 group. Which of your products do you think would be best for me? Should I buy first grade and modify down for my Ks and up for my 2/3s? Do you have a tech lesson bundle that covers multiple grades?
Thanks!
December 27, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Kali Delamagente the Tech Teacher
The keyboarding and digital citizenship curricula cover multiple years, but they don't teach tech as a curriculum (which skill to teach when). You could get away with 1st and 2nd grade in the tech curriculum. 1st is similar to K but deeper and wider. 2nd introduces many skills which 3rd goes into more depth on. All are adapted to specific classroom inquiry. They are aligned with Common Core so you could spiral up or down for that, also.

Does that help?

I don't have a question, but a thank you. A friend pointed out that my name was in the newsletter, and I was surprised to find that my little Valentine Cupcake freebie had been mentioned in your Milestone "Tip" in the newsletter today. I just wanted to say thank you so much for the thank you! I was humbled when you mentioned my little cupcake in your milestone tip. I couldn't believe that you would mention me (and the other girls!) in YOUR tip to celebrate how far you had come on TPT. I was so incredibly surprised and touched, and I just thought you should know that you made my day by downloading, using, and mentioning my clip art!

Thank you so much!

Hi I purchased the K-6th grade Technology books but I did not receive a cd to go with it. The lessons such as Grade 4, lesson 3 makes reference to installing animals around the world but I do not see where the information is located--at the back of the book looks like one can click on to go to websites but the websites are not located in the textbook. How can I get the information. I spent over $130. and I feel I can not really use the books.

Kali Delamagente the Tech Teacher
Hi! None of the books come with a CD. I've found those quite problematic. Instead--and I think better--you get a teaching wiki where a qualified teacher goes through each lesson as it's happening every week. There's a code on the front page of the book you use to join. You'll have 3 of them. I'm going to send you an invite to make it easier, to the email you provided. If you have trouble joining the wiki, here's a great video on joining Wikispaces (http://askatechteacher.com/great-training/). It should be near the top of the list (there are lots of training videos here).

Can you give me the page number for 'installing animals around the world' and I'll see if I can figure it out for you.

You're right--the links aren't active in the print book, but they are typed out so you can put them in the internet address bar and push send. Here's another resource--I have them all online, organized by grade and topic here: http://askatechteacher.com/great-kids-websites/. This will give you lots of options for topics.

Try these and get back to me at askatechteacher.com with any other questions. Thanks for contacting me, Lydia!

I am really excited!! I am wondering which 32 Technology lessons book you would suggest if I could only afford one?? Which (K, 1st, 2nd, etc) would best benefit all my K-5 students?? I appreciate your help! Thank you!
September 6, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Kali Delamagente the Tech Teacher
Hi Lindsay

The K-5 curriculum builds on itself. You wouldn't want to start with 4th grade--students might not have the skills from K-3 lessons to handle the projects comfortably. If I were picking one book, I'd pick the digital citizenship book. That's a complete K-8 curriculum that can be mixed in with your regular lessons, and accomplishes a critical goal of preparing students to use the internet.

If you're looking for a curriculum, I'd probably pick 2nd grade as the starting point because that's where the meat starts--word processing, spreadsheets, presentations. You can differentiate for older students and leave out the parts that are too mature for K/1.

Does that help? That's a hard question! Good luck!

Elizabeth S. re: 1st Grade Technology (5th Ed): 32 Lessons Every 1st Grader Can Accomplish
I am looking for curriculum for k-2 students, to teach them some basics such as how to create a kid pic doc. How to use word to make a title page for a book and
how to import a picture from the internet. Also possibly how to make a stop animation video and strip design using an ipad. Would the first grade book include these things?
August 20, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Kali Delamagente the Tech Teacher
Hi! KidPix is covered in K-2--it's a fundamental tool for learning mouse skills, tools, toolbars, and text basics. 1st graders create cover pages using KidPix (or Kerpoof, Paint, or another drawing program). 2nd Graders learn to use web-based images in Word docs. Word skills start in 2nd grade though word processing skills are well-covered in 1st grade (via KidPix and online tools). If you download the preview here on TPT, I think you'll get a good idea of the projects.

L Ramsey  (TpT Seller) re: 3rd Grade Technology: 5th Edition--32 Lesson Every 3rd Grader Can Do
Hi Kali, I just bought this product for my class of gifted 2nd graders. I have not used any of your products before. It looks like 3rd grade curriculum assumes one is familiar with your previous lessons (i.e. 2nd grade). Do you think I should start with 2nd grade curriculum instead? Issues I have so far: I don't see evidence board explained or examples/printables. Lesson 1 says to review Problem Solving Board, "see inset". The inset is too small to read & where do I get these materials to create the board? Is there an overall vocab resource/glossary to give students? Would these questions be answered if I started with Grade 2? Thank you!
August 14, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Kali Delamagente the Tech Teacher
Hi Lorie--

Let me answer those questions first:
1) The evidence board tracks how students use tech skills outside of the class. It's informal. I ask students to volunteer information. They raise their hands and share an experience with the class (i.e., I used Google Maps to find my friend's house). If it is a valid example, they fill out one of the badges (there's a sample in the book) and I stick it on an 'Evidence Board' bulleting board on the wall. That's it. Very informal. If your 3rd garders aren't chatty, model an example for them (i.e., you used Yelp to find a good restaurant when visiting your cousin). The three Boards (this Evidence Board, the Problem Solving Board and the Speak Like a Geek Vocabulary Board) are great for supporting Common Core Speaking and Listening standards, as well as the revolving around research using tech.

2) The inset is small, but there's a full size sample at the end of the lesson. Some people don't like to page back and forth so I put a mini-pic there where they could at least use it for reference. The 'Board' concept is a presentation by students. I've used that name forever, but now that you mention it, it is confusing. It's not really a board, rather the student picks a tech problem from a list (I post it on the wall), researches it independently through family/friends, then presents the solution to classmates at the start of a class (like a Responsive Classroom event).

3) The Vocabulary Board is a similar idea (and again, I see the confusion calling it a Board). Students select a word, research the definition, then present it to the class. I used to include a list, but I found it better to collect words used in class. For example, when you discuss the USB port--there are two words that should go on the list. 'Network' is a good one. You probably know words your students have trouble with so those can be the ones you use this first year.

I know I've only touched a few of the questions you'll have on an ongoing basis. I invite you to join my teaching wiki (k-3tech.wikispaces.com/Third+Grade). It's free for those who own the book. It's a great place to get focused help on exactly the lesson you're working on.

Thanks, Lorie!

Some of the BrainPop videos are subscription, but some are free or accessed via BrainPop for educators. Kelly Bennett  (TpT Seller) re: 7th Grade Technology: 32 Lessons Every 7th Grader Can Accomplish
Hi, I have your 6th Grade Technology - 32 Lessons Every 6th graders can accomplish - and love it! Is your 7th grade version much different?
June 26, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Kali Delamagente the Tech Teacher
The set-up is quite like it--in units, appropriate to a Middle School type of teaching. The units--of course are different and all aligned with Common Core. The Scope and Sequence, also, is Common Core aligned. Don't be surprised when you see a different 6th grade S&S in the 7th grade book (sounds confusing, but the S&S in 7th grade covers grades 6-8) than the one in the 6th grade book. It's merely updated to reflect the constantly changing nature of tech ed.

Does that explain it?

I cannot view your product even though I have Abobe Master Suite and Adobe Pro. It probably should be delivered in a more universally usable format. In addition, I oredered "5 Projects to Teach Problem Solving" and "5 Projects to Integrate Technology in Math" and I got the same article and no lessons!

That's odd. You should also have 5 lesson plans. I think all you're seeing is the intro. If you would email me at askatechteacher@gmail.com, I'll send the lessons separately. Would you remind me you're from TPT and should get the "5 Projects to Teach Problem Solving" and "5 Projects to Integrate Technology in Math".

I'm sorry about that--don't know what happened.

Donna M. re: THE KEY TO ALIGNING YOUR K-5 CLASS WITH COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS
I am a tech coach for K-5 and I am looking for ways to help the teachers integrate technology into the modules they will be teaching from come September. Would this book help me with that?
Also, are there iPad resources for implementing?
May 17, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Kali Delamagente the Tech Teacher
Yes! This would be a great book for that. There are 5 projects per grade, Common Core aligned. They are highly-adaptable to any inquiry being pursued in the classroom. The grade-level textbooks would be a step up, with 32 projects per grade (and organized as a curriculum, which it doesn't sound like you need).

No iPad resources yet--great idea.

Shelli Burks  (TpT Seller) re: 1st Grade Technology (5th Ed): 32 Lessons Every 1st Grader Can Accomplish
So should I wait a week to download the 5th edition? I will be purchasing the digital download version. Also- is there a student version of materials that are needed to be purchased or the worksheets and materials are for both student and teacher? To make sure I get all the extras that come with the 5th edition? I can't wait to download each grade level.

Hi Shelli

I have the 5th edition version up for 1st-5th. I haven't gotten the cover back from the publisher yet for kindergarten, but I'm hoping that will be tonight.

I think the 5th edition is wonderful--Common Core alignment, more integration into classroom content, more assessments. They are all much longer--70-100% longer!

I'd say download 1-5 anytime, and check back for kindergarten. 6th grade won't be upgraded until next year.

7th grade is coming in June so watch for that, too!

Thanks, Shelli!

Hi Shelli

I am just rolling out the 5th edition--the curriculum aligned with Common Core. By a week from now, I'll have K-5 fifth edition out. I'm really excited about the lessons and the tie-ins. They are much longer than the 4th edition with all that extra material!

I hear that probably occasionally. The pages are there--it's got something to do with Adobe. No worries, though. If you'll give me your email (for security, send it to askatechteacher@gmail.com), I'll send the individual lessons.

Would you mind mentioning in the email which bundle you need and our conversation here--that way, I'll remember it's free!

Thanks!

This is the teacher book. If you want one for each student, there's a class license available here. http://www.structuredlearning.net/site-licenses/.

This one, you can show on the Smartscreen, just not load onto each computer.

I am a little confused about what comes with this sale. Is it 32 lessons for 5th grade, or many grades. Are there project based ides, such as colonies, which is for 5th grade study? I'm looking more for projects than how to use the computer.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Karen

It's only for 5th grade. It's project-based learning. Students learn skills through projects. The focus is on integration into class units through technology. The projects can be used as presented or tweaked to fit your themes. For example, students explore the planet with Google Earth--you can focus on the geography that could have impacted colonial America during this lesson.

If you want projects that cover K-8, you might prefer the two-volume Toolkit (http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/55-Technology-Projects-for-the-Digital-Classroom-Vol-I)

Does that help?

Hi Kali,
I tried to download this bundle but all I got were your first 8 pages explaining how to run the lab and how to use the lesson plans but there were no lesson plans. Did I do something wrong or are they not there. They look like great lessons that I would love to use! If you could let me know, I would appreciate it! Thanks...Robyn Toledo

I like the idea of your packets. I was wondering if you could point me towards the product/s that are best for me. I teach first grade. We have a computer lab that is connected to the Internet. We are not allowed to download or add any software to the computers. What do you recommend?

Hi! I know the grade levels aren't organized well in my store here. You can find a list of 1st grade lessons/books here (http://structuredlearning.net/search/1stgradebooks.html). You can find the one you want and then buy it in the store here or on the website.

In a nutshell, the 5 Common Core projects for 1st grade are perfect, as well as the 5 digital extendors.

Here are a few other options:

I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hello! My apologies for that. The numbered projects are from my two-volume project book (all projects organized by grade, tool, and topic). Here are the two links:
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/55-Technology-Projects-for-the-Digital-Classroom-Vol-I

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/55-Technology-Projects-for-the-Digital-Classroom-Vol-II

In the curriculum, you won't need additional books if you have the K-6 texts and are following basically in order. There are options for other lesson plans, but not required.

I hope that helps!
