broussde re: Force and Motion Science Unit for Early Elementary
Love the experiments and activites. Just a few ?? regarding materials as I want to get everything ready for the fall.
1. Marble Construction Set--are there benefits to the set being transparent?
2. Dimensions for the ramps? Is the same ramp used for 3D Objects/Friction on a Ramp/Mr. Egg Goes for a Ride.
Thanks

Thanks! 1. My marble construction set is not transparent, and we have had no problems. That being said, I could understand how the kids would enjoy watching the marble go through a transparent set. I would recommend going for something inexpensive. The kids will understand the concepts either way.

2. I use blocks that I have in my classroom to set up the ramps. For Mr. Egg it is a board that is about 3 feet long and six inches wide. Be sure to put rails on the sides (wrapping paper tubes taped on work well.) I don't use the same ramp for the friction experiment, just because I like to keep the Mr. Egg ramp, with tubes, ready for year to year. The friction ramp can be much shorter. A foot and a half by two feet is perfect.

Let me know if you have more questions! Enjoy.

The chains that you hang from the ceiling to hold your table center 3D shapes that you show in your Time Savers Guide?

I actually just use yarn to do that. It was hard to show in the picture, so I used a thin chain as a graphic, but I find that yarn attached to a paper clip works wonderfully!

The pages are all in color. However, you can select to print in grayscale when printing, and you can get everything in black and white. I just tried it at home, and it looks great!

beadboard re: St. Patrick's Day Treasure Hunt - Reinforces Curriculum and is Fun!
This is much cuter than my hand written clues. Is there one clue a day for a week or ? do you mind to email me & tell me which places in the school the clues are for? We are a small parochial school & don't have an art room, band room, etc. (some of the places I've seen clues for) Thanks....very intriguing! smskdg@hotmail.com

I actually do all the clues in one morning. There is a build up with the leprechaun over the course of a couple of days, but the actual treasure hunt all happens in under an hour. The packet includes all instructions for all stages.

As for the clues, you have two options. The pre-printed ones have these locations:
cafeteria
computer lab
art room
nurse's office
lost and found
recess doors
main office
gym
guided reading library
mail room

I also have a page where the clues look exactly the same except I left the location blank. That way the only thing you would write in would be the location. I also have planning sheets included to help with this. I tried to make it as adaptable as possible to fit your needs!

This unit is rated K-1. Our new 2nd grade standards deal with Force and Motion.
Have you had any feedback from teachers in 2nd using the unit?

Thanks,

I have had one user specifically mention using it with second graders successfully. Much of my feedback does not specify grades, so it is hard to say what grades they are using it with. However, I do try to differentiate the unit within the experiments so you could elevate it. It is really up to you!

Hi, Are your forms editable? As in, can I type my children's names in, or do I have to write them in by hand?

Thanks!

Hi! The guided reading forms are a PDF, so you would need to write names in by hand. I have assessment forms (a different product), that are editable, but these are not. Thanks!

Thank you for this brilliant unit! We had SO much fun today. I had the Mouse Trap plan in the back of my head and was going to create a record sheet from scratch...you did the hard work for me. Do you mind if I add screenshot of the Mouse Trap page, when I blog about it?

Thanks,

Hi Karen,
I teach at Detroit Country Day and was wondering if I could shadow you for one day? I teach elemenatry science and love your materials. I was hoping to see what you do first hand.
Many thanks. Keep up the good work!

Hi! That would be great! You are more than welcome. However, much of our science work (that utilizes the materials in my store) takes place in the second half of the year (starting January). You would get the best vision of how things look in my classroom then. Does that still interest you?

Can this unit be used on the smartboard......like the chart for the experiment on what plants need to survive?

Hi! I suppose it depends on how you want to use it. Any document can be projected on the SMART board, so you could open the PDF and have it showing on the board. The unit as it stands is not an interactive whiteboard lesson, so I don't think you could record data in it and save it. Does this answer your question?

menmybo re: Shared Reading Five Day Planning Form For Kindergarten!
I have a question about your shared reading 5 day plan. Do you do this with every book you read? Or maybe you pick a special book to do this with and just read other stories once?

Karen Langdon  (TpT Seller)
I definitely do not do this with every book I read. Shared reading is one component of balanced literacy. So for read alouds, I might do a read aloud with accountable talk (discussion afterwords), or just a read aloud for fun.

Shared reading is a different component. It requires a more in depth look. The idea is that ALL students have a copy themselves, or access to a large copy (big book, SMARTboard copy, etc) so they can participate in the reading. It is a way of leveling the playing field and then focusing on certain features.

In the beginning of the year (Sept through late Nov) I do about one shared reading text each week. In ADDITION, I do lots of read alouds, reading lessons, etc). Shared reading does not play as big a role in the second half of the year. Then I focus more on comprehension and reading strategies. Hope this helps!

nypeapod re: Phonics Alphabet With Real Images - No Clip Art!
Would it be possible for you to make a set with the writing lines on each letter? I teach kindergarten and my little ones need to see the line spacing for each letter to see how they should be correctly formed. I really like the real pictures used instead of clipart. Thanks.

Hi,
I just downloaded the "how to" and it wasn't exactly what I was looking for but maybe you can help :) Did you create the paper? That was what I thought I was getting. I thought it would be examples and blank paper - my mistake. Do you have any idea where to get the paper that you had electronically so that I can have students import the pictures of their steps. Thanks,

Hi Gina! I just checked my transactions, and it looks like you purchased the "How To Mentor Texts" packet. I do have another product that is the "How To" unit that includes the blank paper. I did create the paper, so this other unit includes pictures for an anchor chart, a pacing guide, blank writing pages, and another sample text. The kids won't be able to import pictures into this document, but they can draw or glue pictures on the paper. This is a link to that product.

Scipi  (TpT Seller) re: Writing For Readers Writing Workshop Paper - Using Checklists!
I saw your posting on the Sellers Forum page of Teachers Pay Teachers; so, I thought I would look at your freebie. You have a high quality product that you might want Paul to feature in the Sunday newsletter. Just go to your dashboard and look for the green checkmark for submitting a product (under the first group of listings).

I do have a couple suggestions that might help you to better market your products. Use the footer to put the copyright symbol, your name and date of creation on EVERY page. Items, especially free ones, have been "stolen" from TPT and posted on other sites to be sold. You have to protect all of your creations. Also, number your pages.

I realize you don't teach math, but I enjoy reading input from a variety of teacherss. If you have time, I’d appreciate your input on one my freebies listed below.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been working with young children since I was sixteen years old, and was a counselor in training at summer camp. After seven years counseling, directing, teaching, and organizing camping and outdoor education programs, I began pursuing my teaching certification. I interned and worked at a Head Start, a daycare, and a Reggio Emilia based child development center with young children, all before finding my home as a kindergarten teacher for the public school system. I have now had the honor and privilege of teaching kindergartners for six years, and each year has brought more adventures, learning, and joy!

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe in a classroom that honors children where they are, and teaches them to be the best people they can be as they grow. I am energetic and creative, and use lots of songs, music, games, and hands on experiments and activities in my classroom. I am also passionate about workshop teaching, using both writing and reading workshops in my class to meet students exactly where they are and help them to move forward. Most of all, I believe that teachers need to connect with their students in order to inspire their learning and growth.
