Hi Kari! I have loved your Word Their Way resources and I see that you have uploaded a newer version. How can I get just the new stuff since I already have the older version? Is there a cheaper way than having to purchase the entire thing again? Just wondering. Thanks again!

Hi Amy! I was trying to think of how to make that possible. I think that I will create a document in excel that will show the number changes, then add the new word hunts at the end. Give me a few days to get it put together and I will post and send out a note to everyone who purchased the 1st edition that there is a new document to update the 1st version to the 2nd edition.
Thanks so much!

Hi Kari!

I can't tell you how much I enjoy your word hunts for words within words. My school is on week 26 for next week and I tried to see if you had a document to support it, but I was unable to find anything for weeks 26, 27, and 28. Is it labeled something differently?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Can you list the patterns for each sort? Since you used the 1st edition, and others are using subsequent editions, a list of the patterns would be helpful. It seems like the patterns are the same/similar but the numbers are different. I would definitely use this product if the sorts you have match the sorts I need, regardless of the number. I hope that makes sense! Thanks!

I have two VERY dumb questions!! I downloaded the Words Their Way packet for Syllables and Affixes. In the Cloze Passage for Sort #3, your story begins with Emily at the mall with her friends. The first sentence says, "Emily likes to _________ her two friends at the mall." What word possibly fits there from the word list? Also, on the word hunt paper for the same sort, the directions ask you to write the words from the text box and there is no text box listed. Should the students use the words from the original list of words?
Thank you

So Many of the issues are because the words in the 1st edition and 2nd edition books are different.
Looking at sort #3, I don't see it say anything about a text box. The sentence blank would be meet. I'm guessing that you are using the 2nd edition if you don't have the word meet. Sorry for the confusion. My partner and I are discussing changing things over to the 2nd edition. I'll keep you posted if you are a follower.
Thanks so much!

Is there a way you can include an answer key??? I am stumped on a lot of them and I'm not sure if it's because I have the 2nd edition? For example sort work for sort 17. And If there is a way to include a Word Doc version so that we can make changes for the different editions that would be helpful. I have purchased all 3 of your books and seem to be coming upon the same issues in each one.

I am using the second edition books. I have notice it mainly in the Syllables and Affixes sorts and some in the Derivational. I have some students that work in the Within Word sorts as well but haven't noticed anything there.

Do you know of a correlation chart that would show how they could be matched up?

Raylene,
I felt as though most of the changes occurred in the DR book. My partner and I created a correlation chart for DR, but honestly it's just so different that many sorts don't align. If you email me at kari62902@hotmail.com I will send it to you. The big picture is that we need to really sit down and make the book in the 2nd edition. All of these things are on our plans. If you are a follower I will send out an email blast once it's completed.
Thanks for your patience and with working with me. :)
Have a great night!

Hi Kari,

I downloaded the FREE word sort to see what the file looks like and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. However, is it possible to get these in word format so I may edit to make the chart a bit larger as well as the challenge section at the bottom. I teacher first grade and so my kiddos will need more room to write their words. I also may need to edit for some of my sped. students. Please let me know if this is possible before I purchase!

Hi Kari,

I purchased this pack and I love it - I want to buy your other level ones too! As I'm a teacher in Australia, is there a possibility to be able to get a WORD document version of these so that I can change some of the words to the Australian spelling way? The WTW books that I own have different numbers for the sorts too so it would be good to change the sort numbers on the sheets as well. Thank you so much for putting in so much effort into these work sheets - I'm really impressed.

Sorry, the beginning of the school year has been so busy! They are the same sorts with the addition of 3 more. I sell them individually for .99, so I wanted to give a discount for the packs. They are within a few cents from each other. I was trying to get them out as I was writing them, so that is why they are in different packs. I hope to finish DR this year and get them more streamlined.

Hi Kari,
Thank you so much for creating such a valuable resource. My students enjoy the word hunts are are more successful since I started giving them your passages to use.
I have purchased both the Letter Name and Within Word sets and used them regularly. I know have a small group ready to move in Syllable Juncture but given I teach 2nd grade and we only have 2 months of school left, I cannot justify buying the entire SJ packet. Would it be possible to purchase a smaller set (say 10) word hunts?
Thank you for your consideration.

I will post the package from 33-50 for you. I did the 1-32 pack along the way before I got the book completed, but think its crazy for you to purchase the last few for full price. I will get it up there asap for you! :)
DR is not completed yet. They are really tough to write! :) The best I have so far is the 1-25 pack. As we get them completed I will do a 26-50 pack as well. One thing to keep in mind is that they align to the 1st edition that has 50 sorts. I've realized lately that the 2nd edition has 60 sorts and is formatted differently. :(

Thanks for your positivity about my products! :) So glad to hear that your students love them!

Hi Kari,
I just purchased 2 of your products and they are great! I bought the syllables and affixes combo packs. One for $39 and the other for $22. However, I was surprised to see that the one listed 1-32 had the same pages as the one listed as 1-55. I totally goofed! I thought they were going to be different lists and activities. Is there any way I could get a credit towards purchasing one of your other products? I am looking at buying the other words their way resources as well. Also, where do I find the accompanying lists? I've been using WTW for years by just creating lists from the book I have. Is there something I can purchase that has all of the lists already made?

No problem! :). I hope that you will enjoy the program, I saw the benefits but developed these bc they needed more practice with the words in text. Most people purchase the word hunts in the book packs bc then you will have all of the sorts no matter where your kids fall. Most of the WiW pattern stories are posted independently if you want to try out a few first. Hope you enjoy them! Let me know if I can help you more.

Hello,
My name is Teresa West. My school district just officially adopted WTW. Some teachers and I are on a committee to create a district resource folder of activities for each of the lists. I purchased some of your WIW lists to try out in my classroom and really liked them. When I showed the other teachers, they said they would be interested in getting their hands on them. So, I gave them your information. But, we were wondering if you would sell us a district license for your WIW & SA word hunts/clozed readings? If you are, how much would you charge for each?

What word sort lists (#'s) do these lists include?

It includes #'s 7-19.
#'s 1-6 are picture sorts.
I also have the full book for sale. It skips all picture sorts and the extra vowel sort practices. Thanks for your question. Have a great day!

Dear Kari, Please ignore my last question. I found your response and it explains everything to me. Sorry but I am still getting used to this site and missed your response the first time. Once again thank you for the fabulous resources. They have been great for me in the classroom.

I have purchased a lot of your Word Hunts for Words Their Way but am missing Word Hunts for Letter Name Alphabetic sorts 34, 35, 36 and 45, 46, 47. Fo you have these?

Yes, thank u and thank u for all of your positive feedback! :)
Sorts 34-37 are picture sorts, so I skipped those and 45-47 are vowel reviews. That is why I listed it as 37 hunts, not the entire book. I always meant to do extra vowel ones, but quite honestly I haven't even posted syllables and derivational yet. :(. Just not enough time in the day! :). Hope you enjoy them and keep your eyes posted if you need the higher levels. I hope to get them up here soon! Thanks again! Kari :)

Can you tell me the exact WW sorts that are covered? One of the teachers at my school purchased one of your products with the Word Hunts and we love it but it doesn't cover all the WW sorts. And, are you doing any more for SJ?

I will have to look at home. I wrote one for each spelling pattern sort. In the LN book I couldn't write them for the picture sorts. So, not sure if that is the book you are referring to. I am working on S&A, but I know that I need to get them posted. Most are written, just not formatted to post. I promise I'll get to work on getting them posted! :)
Thanks for your question.

I just took a look. They are sorts #7-46. :)

It covers the entire book. I didn't write stories for picture sorts. Hope that helps! Kari :)
I just reviewed the book... Picture sorts until #6. My word hunts start with #6-33, then there are picture sorts again, then #38-43, #44-47 were are review of vowels so I skipped them as well, then finished up with 48 and 49.
Thanks so much for inquiring! :)

Hi Kari! I bought your book last year for within word word hunts and I love it. Do you have one for syllable and affixes as well? I see the indvidual word sorts, but I would like to purchase the whole series at once again.

Thank you Jamie! :). Yes, I have many of them done, but not posted and not bundled. You are the 2nd person to ask today, so you both have motivated me to take a look. I will at least try to post a starter in the next few days. Thanks and have a great weekend! Kari :)

Thanks for your quick answers. Two more questions: are some of the stories nonfiction? Would the stories work for fluency practice if I put numbers on them? (I teach an intervention class for 4th-6th grade readers.)

I don't think any are nonfiction. That is a good idea though! :)
I think you could do it as fluency practice as long as you find that the stories are on the child's reading level. Depending on the intervention group, I would think that most of them would work for your 4th - 6th grade struggling readers.

The wtw patterns I tried to keep on a 2nd/3rd grade readability. Occasionally there will be a harder word in the story, but I felt that the context clues would help the reader decode the word. The story readability definitely increases as the story numbers increase as well. Thanks again and enjoy! Kari :)

Do you know which version of Words Their Way you use? I have the 3rd edition. Are the words in your hunts different than the weekly tested words, but with the same pattern, or are they the words that are on the weekly test?

The books I used do not have an edition on them, but they were published in 04 or 06. I have seen the newer editions and the word sorts are the same the numbers are just off. I found they still followed the same order, but we're just slightly off in number. I chose any word in the sort that fit the spelling pattern skill. The weekly tested words played no factor in me choosing the word for the hunt. I believe the more practice the better! Our school found this extra practice extremely valuable in helping to support spelling patterns. Hope you enjoy them and they make your classroom life a little easier! Thanks so much for your purchase! Kari :)

Julie A. re: Words Their Way-39 Word Hunts:(Within Word Spelling Patterns)
Hi Kari, Just a quick question. I started going through the stories and doing the word hunt for the patterns and found more words than the number of blanks provided in the table. For example I was working on Sort 8 short I (CVC) and long i (CVCe). I found 20 different words that have the short i pattern CVC but there are not enough blanks for all the words. I found 8 different words with the long i pattern CVCe so they will all fit on the lines. There are other long I words but not with the CVCe pattern so I know the kids should not choose these even though they have the long i sound - just not the pattern that Sort 8 is teaching. Can you let me know if I am missing something when it comes to the short i sounding words . I really love the stories but want to make sure I am going to be instructing students correctly when it comes to identifying the words in the story and then writing them in the table. Thanks

Hi Julie! I really did not read that much into the sorts. When I give instructions for the word hunts, its basically just a way to make sure the kids understand the spelling patterns. Occasionally there will not be enough boxes, I either tried to keep it to 1 page (for copying purposes) or 2 pages when I needed more text as the skills got harder. You can either tell the children to write in the amount words for the boxes, or have them write extras on the side or the back... but for example, in Sort 8, the word TIME is listed a few places- I would only have the kids write it once. As for other long I words, you could either have them ignore them, or write the "ODDBALL" I words on the back. They are really just a general template for you to use to ensure that the children in your class understand the difference between Long and Short i. Hope that all makes sense, and please let me know if you have any additional questions.
Kari :)

Hi!
I am a year 4 teacher in Western Australia and am using the WTW spelling program in my class.
Just a quick question - in this pack, is there a word hunt for each sort in the Within Words Patterns book?

Confused with levels, stages, sorts!!

Thanks a lot

Yes, you could be using the more updated WTW books, in which case my #'s are off. They did a new revision of the program about 2 years ago and I have not had the opportunity to tailor my sorts to the new #'s, but there is a word hunt for each sort. I am on Spring Break, so I do not have access to my books where I looked at the alignment, but if you look at the first word hunt title, it will match up with a title in the new table of context, then the rest should fall into place. Hope that helps and please let me know if you need more clarification. I will be back at school tomorrow where I can look at the program if needed. Thanks so much for your purchase and I hope you find the activities helpful! Kari :)

I hope to have it ready by the end of the week. Thanks so much for your push to get this done. I've been meaning to do it for awhile. Hope it went well today in class! :)

Hi Kari, Thanks for your fast response. I am so lucky to teach with 3 wonderful second grade teachers. Our kids are doing terrible in spelling and we just started this week to use WTW. I have read the book 2 times. I love your products!!! I would love to buy all your letter name alphabetic and within word pattern sorts. I am hoping this will work and I can buy the other sorts. It is so hard finding them and downloading them one at a time. Buying them in a pack would be great. Do you have any other WTW activities? Do you use WTW in your classroom?
Thanks for your help!!! Sincerely in teaching, Kim Montavon

I am a Literacy Coach in my building and we have been using WTW for 4 years. Once we started using the program we were wondering where the Word Hunts were... so I started writing them. I have Letter Name and Within Words done. I just need to complete Syllables and Derivational Relations. I'll get to work on putting them all together and posting them for you. I'll have to look through my things for other WTW activities. I'll keep you posted. Thanks so much for your interest! I personally love the program and think it can work if teachers buy into the program. Its a lot of work running different sorts for different children, but totally worth it! :)

It's so funny that you say that. I was just thinking that I should start putting them together to buy as a pack. Are you using the Words Their Way program??? Or just like the activities? The reason I ask is because I have them done by the WTW spelling stages and can put them together that way for you. Let me know exactly what you are looking for and I can put it together for you.
Thanks so much and have a wonderful evening!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am going into my 10th year teaching. I have taught most elementary grades, been a Title 1 reading pull-out teacher, and am currently a Literacy Coach. I love what I do and really believe in the power of Words Their way as a Reading support in the classroom!

MY TEACHING STYLE

I love kids working in small groups through rotations... the most important time in a child's school day is when they are with you at the small group table. Get rotations up and running well in your classroom and you WILL see the benefits.
