Great activity for the students to practice this skill. Anchor charts are wonderful!!! Activity is difficult to assemble because when you print double-sided sides do not align. It would be nice to include nonsense words to further master this skill. Thanks for your hard work!

Thanks for asking your question. Yes, this product was created to support an essential thinking skill needed to gain an understanding of multiple strands of the Common Core Standards.
-Understanding key details in literature (RL2.1)
-Understanding key details in informational text (RI.2.1) *Note, the text in Main Idea Bags:Fiction is not informational, but fiction can be used to scaffold this since the 'reading to learn' piece is removed. Thus, using the fiction text as a bridge to RI2.1 is an effective strategy.
-Determining the main point of text and identify the main purpose of a text (RI.2.4, RI.2.6) Again, using fiction as a scaffold.
Using Main Idea Bags:Fiction is also a scaffold for writing. It is an excellent scaffold for students to understand how to write and stay on topic. A skill which is essential for mastering all three writing genres from CCCS for second grade.
No, it isn't pulled from a specific strand, or meant for skill practice to master one strand. Instead, the purpose is to provide thinking practice that will be built upon as the text and work builds in complexity in class.

The rules for the charts are based on the standards from my state and general research that I did to organize the rules. If you decide to purchase the product and need specific anchor charts that are not included, I would be more than happy to add what you need. Just let me know!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
This is my 7th year teaching - and I love what I do! My experience includes both first and second grade as well as academic enrichment/GATE teacher for grades first through sixth. I returned to second grade in 2010 and I've been loving every minute of it! Second graders are wonderful!
MY TEACHING STYLE
I love a buzzing, hands-and-minds-on classroom - and I'm not afraid of a little bit of chaos! I love when my students are talking and problem solving together. I use many different models of instruction -- but I like it best when my students are in charge of their learning. I work to provide the opportunity for 'ah ha!' moments. I love The Daily Five framework for literacy and Cognitively Guided Instruction for mathematics.
