TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I've been teaching for ten years at the college level (UVM freshman comp); at private schools (Quaker school in MD); and now at a public school (State College, PA).

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe in rigorous curriculum, but having it be student-centered. I would always rather see students make interesting connections between classic literature and pop culture than have them completely disinterested.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

• February, 2009. Teaching Tolerance Grant. “Teaching Tolerance through Graphic Novels. $800 grant to buy classroom books. • July 9-27, 2007. NEH Summer Seminar. “Writing Africa: Comparative African and European Palavers and Perspectives.” Central Michigan University. • November 2005—Eva Diefenderfer Graduate Fellowship in the College of Education. The Pennsylvania State University. • September 2005—ETS Recognition of Excellence. Given to people scoring in the top 15% in the English Language, Literature, and Composition: Content Knowledge exam. • July 2002—Technology Leadership Institute @ The Bullis School, Potomac, Maryland.
