Elementary students have used it with teacher support, helping them understand their character's POV and what they know and want. You will have to help elementary students even if they ahve gone over the fairy tale genre and know the stories. It is a fun way to start to delve into character analysis.

Middle and high school need less support since they are more familiar with doing independent character analysis and creating. And I have had adults use it and it was fine (though they incorporated more "adult" into it that was written.

You could always download a free mystery party game (I'd recommend Assassination on the Nile) Check it out, evaluate how well the format, not the topic, would work with your students. If you still need more info, email me at kathyfoolforchrist@gmail.com and I will email you what you need beyond what is in the preview pack.

Have you ever considered writing a unit for the book A FATHER'S Promise? I use this book EVERY year when teaching the Holocaust to my 5th graders. I read it as a read aloud but would love more activities to go with it. I have never been able to find anything to use with unit other than what I put together myself. If you have not read this book.....OH, YOU HAVE TO READ IT....the children sit on the edge of their chairs and come into class asking me if I am going to read A Father's Promise each day....

Just about. Sometimes it is a word sort activity (by parts of speech) sometimes roots and affixes, sometimes definitions, sometimes act out words or a visual dictionary (pictures and words) or writing exercises using words from the chapter etc. I have a variety of ways to interact with the vocabulary plus links to free online interactive games I created in Quia like http://www.quia.com/hm/808553.html for additional comprehension. Every chapter is covered but not all in the same way. Hope this answers your question.

Most of them are set up that way. Some have an answer, then also ask a related question, which is answered on the next slide. They all contain graphics (photos, maps) to help explain the answer or trigger thinking. A few give additional information on a topic. Does this help?

This looks like a great resource for our dinosaur/creation unit at my Christian school. Looking through the slides, I wasn't sure what the conclusion was, or the purpose. Is it just for generating questions and spurning students to analyze the Bible's text? What would be the result of looking at the Leviathan vs. Crocodilians?

Thanks for asking. The slide show should not just teach characteristics of crocodiles and alligators but also provide an opportunity to see how science and the Bible are not in conflict.
There is no set conclusion. They will need to draw their own conclusions based on their own comparison and contrast, research, thoughts. I would hope they would also appreciate the poetic qualities of Job in contrast to the presentation of facts. I think I will upload a revised version with some writing prompts and graphic organizers.

They can be done indoors or out. Some of them involve running after limited resources so I like to use the gym or go outside. Some you can do with large or small groups. Some work better with groups of at least 7 or 8 so you have different organisms in the food chain. Some can be done with fewer participants. One adaptation to consider (I have alternative ed students who need behavioral modification) is to give each student an organism and link getting the resources to behavior (1 water for homework, 1 sun for staying in seat, 1 nutrient for .... etc) At the need of the week they see if they lived or died, grew or stayed the same. Hope this helps. If not, what did I leave out?

It is confusing. I need to fix that. This should clear things up. You do not need the preview. You can use your own chips. OR if you want, you can make a second set of the advanced cards, cut them up and use them as chips (markers) on the 5 kingdom, food chain and vertebrate/invertebrate versions. Downloading the preview just lets you see what the cards look like.

Can you provide me with a bit more instructions on how to use the cards? I have printed and laminated them. I am only going to use the vertebrate/invertebrate, classification, and kingdoms.

1) So, am I correct that I would have 3 different games going on?

2) Can you give me an example of how the card is read?

3) How do I know which cards go with which game?

Thank you!

Kathleen Applebee  (TpT Seller)
Thanks for the questions. You could have three different games if you wanted to differentiate but it probably would be chaos. The three sets lets you pick the level of detail you want for a particular class.
I am in the process of revamping the game BUT to answer your questions: There are 3 different sets of cards. The clues are being color coded to make it easier to know which clues to use for which game (a science teacher could tell but I have found if I allow students to be the caller .. for a group who finishes early maybe, they can't do it without color coding, thus the revamping.) One game is more upper elementary - they must decide if the organism called fits in bird, mammal, fish, etc. The niche/food chain game (separate cards) they decide if the organism is a producer, omnivore, decomposer, etc. The last game has cards with the organism's picture and possibly a label. When a clue is read ("lad invertebrates with 8 legs") they must cover an arachnid.
I plan to send out a blurb to my followers when the new one goes up. Please follow me and be one of the first to know.

Kathleen Applebee  (TpT Seller)
Cool subject! Mystery dinner theaters are a great tie in. Depends on several factors. Do you want a few or many actors or a few major roles and many secondary roles? Historical or English or science tie in? Are costumes a factor?
The Roosevelt Assassination probably is the best if you want 10 major roles and all the minor roles you could desire. Audience members and cast will have clues they can use (medical report, etc.) to figure it out. Plus it is pretty close to factual historic from the Industrial Age even though some of the characters are made up - there could have been people who wanted him dead over the Panama Canal or gold in Canada.
Murder at the Manor covers the Middle Ages with reasonable accuracy but the characters are made up. Both of those would be better with period costumes.
Send in the Clones has fewer roles but does have a science tie in and a couple of lab coats and what kids probably have in their closets (or at Goodwill) make costumes easier.
The Will has someone with a gambling problem and Lifeguard has marital infidelity. You have to think about your audience and admin's thoughts on if that's appropriate in your community.
Prospector Pete has some historical basis, requires some costumes.
Fairy Tale Wedding is a blast, especially for kids in your audience but you need costumes and Troll and Wolf might stretch even a HS drama department.
If you live in SE VA or northern/eastern NC, Writing Mysteries Can Be Murder is a good choice because there is a possibility the actual author (who is killed off) could come. We've done that show with her several times in Virginia beach, Chesapeake and Suffolk, VA. Contact me again about that.
You might want to download Assassination on the Nile (free) to see what these are like. Even though that one is for church related events it will give you an idea.
Hope I haven't over or under answered. Please contact me if you want to give me more info on your situation.

Thanks. Yes, I write them. Some I sell via Plays magazine but I'm liking TpayT as well. You have some terrific stuff too. I downloaded and commented on each (that does seem to make a difference in how many hits you get which directly relates to how many downloads you get. A couple of suggestions: Leave Stage Business and the Places game free for awhile - they are short and give buyers a good feel for your products. The last (4th) page on both is blank. You might want to delete it so it doesn't waste copies OR describe a few more of your products and include a direct link to them. Makes it easy for the buyer. I would rather sell 10 for $1 than 1 for $10 so I have kept all my prices under $4. I'm going to click that I follow you. Stay in touch.

I am doing a mystery unit with my 6th graders and would like to tie it all up by having a murder mystery party in the classroom. Do you think your games would be appropriate for a 6th grade class? I was looking at either the Murder at the Manor or the fairy tale one.

Murder at the Manor if they like medieval. Prospector Pete isn't bad for that age group because the "love affair" couple ends up being a brother and sister (a fact they try to hide initially) Send in the Clones has a science theme but might be above their knowledge of life science. Elelmentary and High school seem to like Fairy Tale but middle schoolers are at that in between age and sometimes boys think it is "babyish" to play fairy tale characters but girls like being princesses type characters. Feel free to email me at kathyfoolforchrist@gmail.com if this answer is as clear as mud. You can give me more specifics about your students likes, dislikes, what you are trying to accomplish with the unit.

Let me see if I can fix that. It could be your printer settings. Check and see if your printer will allow you to "shrink to fit" while I see if I can change it to a pdf which might work better. Thanks for the heads up.

The download was incomplete. The bingo cards were blank. I know it was only a $1, but I'm not happy.

I don't blame you one bit. I would be unhappy too. Let me see if I can figure out what happened. If you want to email me directly try katpage-applebee@spsk12.net and I can hit reply and attach the file. In the meantime, I'm glad you caught this. Kathy

I love the format of the rags to riches. Could you share or do you have a template for sale so I can make my own game with the questions I need. I teach 9th grade geography and don't see the content I need. I love that it has the scoring and the hints and all. Please let me know.

I make them using Quia - a subscription based program. It is $49/year and to me well worth it for the 3 years I have had it. Quia.com is the website. You can get a free 30 day trial. If the trial allows you to search for activities others have made ask for Geopgraphy by Mr. Bowerman - he has some fantastic games up there. http://www.quia.com/pages/all.html is a web page listing all of his games. Plus you canconvert the games to quizzes and if you choose sertain question types (T/F, MC, ordered list, etc) it will grade it for you and keep track of all the results. Check out the free trial and see if it would work for you. Good luck!

Looks like a great idea ... But, the download only gave me the Excel file with no map .. Just questions and red triangles with information. Am I missing something??

Thanks for asking. I think I should include a lesson plan but probably will have to do it as a separate download since I don't know how to combine a word doc and excel file. on to your question:
To answer the questions, you roll the mouse over the triangles and read the scriptures. The map provides a way of seeing what happened in each city on each trip (each trip is on a separate sheet which you access with the tabs at the bottom). Does this help?
Thanks.

R= Role, A = Audience, F= format, T = topic. One of the best sites describing RAFT writing is http://www.writingfix.com/wac/RAFT.htm or www.readwritethink.org/.../using-raft-writing-strategy-30625.html
I'm glad the power point works for you!

Do you mean you would like me to post a picture of the online game? I figured (maybe wrongly) since it was a free download, people would just download the document to get the links. However, I guess I could include a link in the description so you could copy and paste into your browser to see a sample before you downloaded the document. Do you think that would be better? I don't know how I'd get a screen shot of the game to come up in the description, so if that's what you mean... I don't know how to do that.
Thanks for the feedback though. Its good to know what others think.

Can you give me more info on how to start your murder mystery parties? i purchased the prospector pete...after handing out the character dossiers and reading the opening statement do you just have each character start talking after Sally or how does that part work?

Whatever character you are playing can ask that everyone introduce themselves and how they knew Pete. If you get stuck again, in character, you can ask "Where was everyone the past few days?" Usually people don't need allot of prompting; they'll start spilling and accusing. However if its the first time for everyone the host(ess) can ask some questions including "Who does everyone think has the best motive? " You can also just start yelling out wild accusations - that breaks the ice and people jump in.
If you want to call me, that's fine. I don't want to post my phone number all over TpayT but email me at kathy.applebee@verizon.net and I'll email you my phone.
One last thing - you can coach the new people a couple days before it starts telling them what to do.
We just did one at school for our final show of the year - about cloning dogs. It was wild and the audience loved it. The Suffolk News Herald covered it since no middle school in our area had ever attempted one before.
Hope I answered everything.

I am an alternative ed teacher. Rigt now I have 5-8 all 4 subjects. Its kinda crazy since I don't have all the same subject at the same time. I do use quia alot so one group can work indeendently while I do another group.
Originally I was a PE teacher but I've had 2 knee replacements. After the first I tok classes so I could get endorsed in English. Then somehow I drifted into alt ed. I want out next year. I hate having to teach math.
Most of what I put on quia though is what I do with church and my ministry there with drama and children.
You can access alot of my quia games through my portaportal. (portaportal.com and type in applebee in lower case letters for guest access. Its a bit sloppy but has lists of links I use with different subjects. It usually indicates somewhere the link is to a quia game.
Thanks for taking the time to write. Please stay in touch.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Besides the traditional classroom I have taught in the prison system, residential mental health facilities and in theaters across the country. Currently I work in alternative education at John F. Kennedy Middle School in Suffolk, Virginia. I teach English and science for grades 4-8. I also am a Drama Club sponsor at JFKMS and a drama minister at Fools for Christ http://mysite.verizon.net/vze4p7te/foolsforchrist I offer a number of free scripts at that site.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Two for the price of one! What ever works! From experience in alternative education I try to get double mileage with all lessons to catch my students up. I use Reader's Theater to augment curriculum in all content areas since it not only provides content and fun but works on reading skills such as fluency, vocabulary building and prediction. See my website at http://mysite.verizon.net/vze4p7te/foolsforchrist/ In my current position, each student has a computer so I often teach with technology.
