libros1 re: Explorer's Notebook - Information Pack for Students
Hi,
Could this assignment be adapted to a home-schooled student, or is it absolutely necessary to have a group? I really like your idea, and I would like to use it!

I think the Explorer Project could absolutely be adapted for the home school setting. It would definitely take a while longer to do if you had only one child working on the project, but they would be able to do quite a bit of in-depth research. I'm not sure how old your student is, but it would be a great tie in to have with a biography research and writing assignment too (got to love all of the cross-curricular bonuses!).

The only thing that you wouldn't be able to experience in the project is the presentation portion. I had my students in groups of about four and at the end they got to dress themselves as genuine explorers and present their exploration to the "Queen" (myself). I also had my class take notes on the different explorers and we had a small quiz afterwards. Depending on how many children you have working on this, you could possibly have them each do a different explorer to expand their knowledge base too.

I hope that information helps. It really is a fun project and my class has thoroughly enjoyed it each time it's been done. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Most recently I have taught 5th grade for the past three years in all subject areas, focusing on language arts for the past two. I have previously taught 6th grade math, 3rd grade, 1st grade, and summer school for a variety of grade levels.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I try to reach all of my students on an individual level - they can all be successful, just meet them where they are and go from there! Also, you have to have a great sense of humor - otherwise, why bother? :)
