I am just wondering if there is a way to make a new page where the levels start at an A and go until a M. I work in a title one school and our students are sometimes lower then other schools. I just don't want to change it and destroy your product.

You should do a pre assessment before you pick the sort. If you don't already have one, I suggest you get your hands on one of the words their way books. Most schools have at least one copy somewhere. If you have a reading specialist on your campus I would talk to them. You most likely will not have everyone on the same sort. That's why I made these sort packets. I wanted a uniform activity for the many different sorts. I currently have 20different sorts going each week in my room but everyone has the same type of homework.

Why do so many of the Within Words come without an assessment? I assumed, after having downloaded the freebie for 25, that they would all come with an assessment page? I didn't discover this until after I bought all of them. :-(

I'm sorry if my freebie mislead you. I have as many picture assessments as possible. I stay consistent within each set. Some of the sets have words that are not tangible objects and can not be portrayed with a picture. For example, some of the words are gist, cease, blame, and weren't. There's not a picture that I could use to represent those words. If it didn't work for the entire set, then I didn't do it. The descriptions of each set in my store list exactly what's in the set, including the assessments. I follow along with the Words Their Way books and have included at least an assessment at the end of each skill set.
If you would like, I can make up an assessment page for the other sorts, but I will not be able to put pictures. It would be just like having the students do a typical spelling test, which would defeat the purpose, but would be in the same font and layout. Or if you can think of another form of assessment that would work, let me know and I'll throw it together for you.

I bought this over the summer and have been trying to implement your idea this year with my fourth graders. The trouble I'm running into is that, I have a difficult time keeping a percentage track of their objectives/goals on a continuous basis. For instance, my students are supposed to "use a variety of reading strategies when given a grade level text with 80% accuracy, tested 3/4 times in a grading period" I haven't mastered how to score this in such a way that I can share a percentage with each student. The other problem is that some of the students I have on my caseload I do not service all of their goals...so then should I just not worry about those goals/students? I travel to 3 classrooms each day so the in depth understanding of each student's progress is difficult-this is also only my 2nd year teaching so maybe that's part of the problem. Anyway, can you share with me your record keeping system so that I can have an idea as to whether this will work for me or not?? Thanks!

I don't have them graph anything that they don't do with me, so if they have goals with speech, OT, behavior.....then they can work on those goals with those specialists. I only graph out their academic goals.
As far as turning your goals into a percentage....it definitely takes some work. Some of the goals are easy for me to figure out, but difficult for the kids. It takes some time to put them in kid friendly terms. With my kids a lof of their graphs deal with their end of week reading comprehension assessments. I have them graph those percentages because if they can increase their percentages on that type of assessment then they are obviously using the reading strategies correctly. Does that make sense? This is only my third year, so I definitely understand trying to figure out what works and what doesn't. Once I started graphing their progress it sparked a change in how I view the goals. Now when it comes time for me to write their new IEP, I think about how the kids can work toward it and I write it in a way that they could see their own progress.

I'm not sure. I haven't seen the 5th edition book. I've made these sorts based off of the sorts from the Word Sorts series of Words Their Way. The books I used are the 2nd edition, and I don't believe there is a more recent version of them. I just checked the Pearson website, and they're still listed as their most recent. First, make a cover page for EVERY product you create which can then be used as an attractive thumbnail to entice buyers. Add a second page which is a directions or suggestions page. List several ways you use this product in your classroom. (Is it a center activity? Are there adaptions to change the game? Etc.) Never assume that a buyer knows how, why, or when to use your product.
Use the footer to put the copyright symbol, your name and date of creation on EVERY page. Items, especially free ones, have been "stolen" from TPT and posted on other sites to be sold. You have to protect all of your creations. Also, number your pages.

I teach students with disabilities. I push in to the 1st and 2nd grades and help in a level reading intervention. I also pull students out of class and offer intense direct instruction for students K-5 in the areas of reading, writing, and math.
