Randy Felter (TpT Seller)
I loved this! Not only were students able to work either by themselves or with partners and understand which of Newton's Laws applied, but any students that were struggling to figure out which Law they fit under could see what their peers used, and use that to understand it.

You can absolutely adapt this for 5th graders. I would do it by extending the time and reducing the stress of the challenge. If you present the concept and show the photos one day, students could plan out their design and submit an engineering sketch. You could have them include a description of the motion they expect and what they plan is to get it to return (that's the hard part).
Then grade more gently. It's actually not that easy to get the rocket to get all the way across the line. Perhaps that's all you'd want on a one day build. Then, offer the "it has to come back" version the next class. They will have had some practice, understand what some of the limits are and be able to make better decisions.

It does not. It's easy to make as you watch the video, however. The next time I use it in class (some time in May), I'll create a key to go with it.

This lab is so much fun! It's one of the things students look forward to in physics.
I actually get balloons by the 1/2 pound at the Dollar Store. I warn students about the allergy (they know if they have it by the time they are in grade school). Most balloons today are latex free.
Oriental Trading and Party Stores also offer latex free balloons now. Orientaltrading.com is a great and inexpensive source.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
26 years as a physics and chemistry teacher. I was an co-author on the Teacher's Edition of a Glencoe Merrill high school physics text and have written ancillary materials for Glencoe and Holt in the areas of chemistry, physics, physical science, and environmental science.
