Good morning! I am a first grade teacher, formerly PK teacher. I just finished my masters in May (yea!) with a degree in Mind, Brain and Education – a subfield of education. The first program was started at Harvard by Howard Gardner and Kurt Fisher (if you haven’t read any of Kurt Fisher’s work on Skill Theory and you are interested in the cognitive processes involved in learning, you must read his work!)
Cut to the chase. When I moved up from PK to 1st I was shocked by my students’ lack of number sense. I spent an entire year and all last summer trying to figure out what was missing. In Nov I attended a workshop that on number sense. When I heard the presentation I recognized all the “big” names of the research I had been investigating. The workshop was a training session for an iPad app (Native Numbers). It seemed like a valid, robust app, but I am a skeptic and had to know: would this really work.
I am here to tell you that with the first skill set I saw every cognitive model of learning embedded in this app. I also realized that this app is more than a learning tool; it has built in formative and summative assessment as it is adaptive and levels up and down based on student performance and leads to mastery.
Now I am on a “mission” – everything we read tells us our students are lacking number sense. I believe this app is a fabulous tool to remediate those deficits. I have no vested interest in this app except that I am one of those people that has to solve problems and when I think I have found possible answers, I have to share that with others. Our kids are too important not to share---which is why I love reading blogs! I am asking for teachers to simply read the research and then try out the app and give me feedback---or give the feedback yourself to the developers. I am that convinced. I am not a salesman and I feel quite strange in this new role I have taken upon myself…but I have nothing to lose, or gain, except knowing that maybe we can have an enormous impact on our students!

I need 5 different fall activities. Comprehension, Vocabulary, Phonics, Fluency, and Phonemic awareness. Do any of these activities fall under that category? Hey, Kerri! I recently purchased your Earth Day Literacy and Math Centers. I love the activities, but I am confused about two separate centers. In the syllable sort, there are four blanks for each category (1, 2, 3, and 4 syllables), but there are only two 1-syllable words, and there are six 2-syllable words. Is this how it's supposed to be? Also, the fact family activity recording sheet is confusing because it says "Ways to Make 5, Ways to Make 20, etc.," but the fact family sums and differences aren't always the same number. My students were confused about that. Maybe it would be better to have the three numbers in the fact family above the boxes where they write the facts. I hope that makes sense! Thanks for your hard work!

Hi There! Thank you so much for your questions. I totally agree with you that the fact family sort can seem confusing. I will fix the recording sheet and revise the file. As to the syllable sort, maybe you didn't have all the cards that are included when your kids did that center? The 3 syllable words included are: butterfly, animal, gardening, and organic. The 4 syllable words included are: preservation, conservation, re-usable, and recycling. I just checked the file and you should have those cards included.

I just stumbled upon your word centers etc and I LOVE them! I teach a special day class full of boys that want to write all the time! I have been searching high and low for a "picture dictionary type" thing and your is the best that fits! I was hoping you possibly had a hug bundle of all the sheets with the pictures and words (minus the packets for booklets etc) My dream would be to put the "dictionary" in their resource binder, which in turn will allow them to be more independent.. If you have all of your words in one package.. could you lead me to them? I'm sure you get all kinds of requests, and I really don't want to be presumptuous, but any way you could avoid any holiday themes in the fix the mix up sentence scramble centers? Many of my students don't celebrate Christmas or Easter, so I wouldn't want to include the December or April months worksheets. Just wondering...then I would buy it!

I just purchased your 100th day pack and I am really looking forward to using it with my Kindergarten friends! I was wondering if there was any flexibility in changing 4 pages to best meet the needs of my students? Here are the titles I was hoping for:
I can write the names of 10 star words...
I can write the names of 10 "h" words...
I can write my last name 10 times.....
I can write my first name 10 times....

Hi Kerri, I have a 1/2 multi age class. Many of my second graders can write a pretty long piece. I have several of your writing bundles. My question is about the writing paper that you include that has a picture area on the top and lines on the bottom. Is there any way you could make a full size page of the lined paper. I would like to copy your picture/lined paper and the all lined paper back to back. I have some lined paper, but it's not the same and I would like a consistent look. Thanks for your time!
