Kristy Sagan  (TpT Seller) re: Ethos, Pathos, Logos: Research and Intro Activity
Can you elaborate a little bit on what type of activity this is and how long the activity should take?

Sure. I would think that the activity itself might take one 55-minute class period. It's best if students have access to individual computers, such as in a computer lab or something.

Basically, the activity is broken into three different parts. I want my students to focus on ethos, pathos, logos as three separate and different concepts (initially). The ethos part sets forth 16 media/celebrity figures and asks them to rank them (from 1-16) based on their credibility. If they're unfamiliar with someone, then they'd have to do a little researching--a minute or so. They also have to write a sentence or two explaining why they ranked them they way they did.

The pathos section lists several different emotions and asks them to find an advertisement that uses that emotion to sell its product/idea. They have to summarize the ad in one sentence, then explain how it uses a particular emotion in a second sentence.

The logos section lists several different "issues" or "topics" and asks them to find a statistic about each. Basically, they write the statistic as a complete sentence, then list the source (URL) where they found it.

I hope this helps. It's really a pretty easy (and I think) enjoyable activity, and it introduces those concepts in a way that they can relate to and that is not overwhelming.

Let me know if I can answer or clarify anything else for you.

Thank you for the key. Tomorrow works fine for me. The links weren't a big deal for me, but thought you'd want to know based on the other correspondence. I can't explain why they won't work either, yet they work in Google. I appreciate your prompt response.

No problem. What is your email address? I can't figure out how to attach a document here. Maybe I'll just put it on TPT as a free product.

I noticed the banter below and thought I'd tell you the links have not been remedied based on my purchase yesterday; however, my students were smart enough to figure out that if you copy and paste the url into Google instead of in the white bar at the top, the links will work. If you also click on the hyperlink directly, it works, but the other teacher probably was like me and had made paper copies for her students. (Just letting you know.) My question though is will you please send me an answer key if you have one available? Thanks!

Really??!! The links aren't working? I fixed this last year (or so I thought). I will see what I can do about it. I'm pretty sure I have an answer key. I'll have to scan it and email it to you if that's ok. Thanks for letting me know. I'll be in touch.

Ok . . . So I've looked at it again. I can't explain why typing in the links in the search bar doesn't work. I post my assignments and documents on my teacher website, so I just have my students click on the links. I've never had trouble with doing that. Sorry for the inconvenience. I'll get that key to you ASAP.

Do you have an answer key for these questions? I would REALLY appreciate that. I would even pay for it in addition to the questions!

Thanks!

I actually do have an answer key. It's a hard copy, and it's in my classroom right now! I don't go back to school for a few more weeks, but if you'll email me, I'd be more than happy to scan it and send it to you. My email address is kabury@baschools.org.--No charge! :) :)

Kerri,

October 21 was the first day that I received any e-mail response from you through TPT regarding the issue at hand. I did not receive any response on October 16. When I find the proper address I will e-mail TPT with this information. Again, the only e-mail response that I received was sent on October 21. I will inform TPT that the issue is resolved and inquire about the removal of feedback.

Susan,

I have copied and pasted my three replies from 10/16 so that you can read them. Tell me, were you finally able to access those websites and use the WebQuest?
I have used this WebQuest for a few years now. I used it as recently as last spring. I was unaware that the links may be broken. I will check into it and see if I can find other links. I am so, so sorry for the inconvenience. I will get back with you soon.

I have found the new URL address for the first link and have corrected it on the WebQuest document. I'm still looking for the booknotes.org link.

I've found the correct booknotes link and have updated it on the WebQuest document as well. Please let me know if you have trouble downloading it and/or accessing these new links. The pages are still the same; I guess the URLs changed. Again, I apologize for any inconvenience, but thanks for letting me know!

I e-mailed you a couple of days ago regarding the Trancendentalism Webquest. The first two links do not work. Can you recitify the situation? Otherwise, I will have no choice but to leave negative feedback to warn other TPT users.

Susan,
Did you not see the three replies I sent you on the 16th--the day you brought the problem to my attention, also the day I corrected the problem and re-uploaded the document? I don't understand how you didn't see my replies. I'm looking right at them. I've also sent an email to TPT, informing them that your comments are libel. Please remove them once you realize that the problem has been addressed and "rectified." Thanks.

I just purchased your Transcendentalism WebQuest/Research Activity. However, I have found that the first two websites that you list http://www.wsu.edu/~campelld/amlit/litfram.html and www.booknotes.org/Transcript/?ProgramID=1264 are listed as broken links or missing pages. Before I ask for my money back, can you rectify the situation?
