Hi, I am a student teacher right now in a Kindergarten classroom. I am making really big changes in the class I am in right now (and of course these big changes cost a lot of money and more than money time). I have come across you math word wall for kindergarten and I really love it. My question is would you be will you help me enrich 25 kindergarten students over here in Tucson Arizona by allowing me to save time and money and download it for free?
I would greatly appreciate the help.

I don't have an answer key at this time, other than having them listed as plant or animal. The front side of the report requires them to draw a diagram of a plant and animal cell and label the organelles. This part I used as an assessment because it tied in directly to our standards. The back side I used more as a jump start for our discussions, so I gave students a pass/fail/effort grade.

Thank you again for your purchase!

Newly created PDF files need to be opened with the latest Adobe Reader software. You can get that for free here:
http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/

For Mac Users:
The default PDF application on a Mac is called Preview. This program is not compatible with newer PDF files. You must take these steps to open your PDF with Adobe Reader:
1. Highlight the PDF product icon with one click.
2. Go to "File" at the top of the screen.
3. Choose "Open with."
4. Select "Adobe Reader."

Sometimes a PDF will look fine on your screen, but may not print out correctly (especially if the file is graphic-heavy).
Try this:
1. Open the file in Adobe Reader.
2. Click "Print" within the Adobe Reader application.
3. You can select "adjust to fit" if necessary.
4. Click "advanced."
5. Check the "print as image" box.

Try opening the document from an entirely different computer.

Please let me know if any of these option help or if there’s anything else I can do on my end to make this right! If you would like me to send you the file via email, I would be happy to do so. I want you to be fully satisfied with your purchase!

At this time I only have the 11x17 size. It can be printed out at different sizes, however. Select "File-Print" and then when the options box pops up select the following:
For 8.5x11 select "Fit" - this will print the entire poster on one sheet of paper.
For smaller sizes select "Multiple" and choose the size you prefer.
I hope this helps.

Thank you for your purchase. When I do this activity with my students, I assign a different cell picture to each partner/group. I tell them that many cells were recovered from the crime scene and they need to help by classifying them as plant and animal cells. Depending on the age/ability of the students, you might want to select certain cells that will be more/less challenging for them to identify. I hope this helps and that your students enjoy the activity!

If I'm understanding the other Q and A correctly, you gave each group one picture and had them use that to form their conclusion, correct? This would mean that each group would have a different (probably) conclusion, correct? Not being a science person myself, could you please post your answer key...which pictures are which? Or, e-mail that to me? At least which ones are plant and which are animals? Maybe even what stood out in each picture to let kids know which is which? I'd love to use, but I feel I need more information to help my kids be successful with this activity.

Also, I teach 5th. Is this doable for them? It seems hard, but I LOVE the challenge! I just don't want it to be too hard or way over their heads!

You are correct in thinking that each person/group would have a different conclusion. As far as an answer key, I did not include one due to the nature of the challenge. The images are identified as either plant or animal cells within the product. I have used this with both fifth and fourth graders. They do an excellent job. I generally use some of the trickier ones as group discussions prior to their independent work. That way I can model the thinking process and possible ways of justifying my thinking. I guide students to look for the cell wall (or lack of), large vacuole, and even the chloroplasts in some images. I hope this helps.

Hillary,
Thank you so much for your comments. I love putting visuals with definitions - I think it helps the students make connections and remember the meaning of each word.

As far as your request, I had planned to do that. :) I just wanted to wait until I had developed all of my science units so the collection would be complete.

I am spending the summer putting a few more units together, and then I had planned to bundle all of the vocabulary cards together. Target date for completion: middle of July.

Hope that helps.
Thanks for checking out my products.

After reviewing this item again, with the plan of using it soon with my students, can you please explain what they answers should look like. Some slides were blurry to me and I don't think I would be able to tell if it were plant or animal. I know plants are usually more rectangular in shape and have a cell wall. What else would the "report" say. I want to make this fun...because it seems to be...I just don't have explanations to go with the pictures so I, myself, can better understand what the students should see in the picture.
September 2, 2012 Report inappropriate comment
n/a
Kim Coker  (TpT Seller)
When I did this with my students, I used some of the slides as examples. We talked as a class about what we could identify in the picture. Truthfully, some of them are VERY difficult - this is part of the point. I find that most students have the misconception that a cell looks JUST LIKE THE DIAGRAMS in their science books and this just isn't so. Their favorite answer is that plant cells are rectangular and animal cells are round. :)

The main organelles we could identify were the cell wall (more rigid/straighter edges) and the large vacuole. I used the report as a way for them to try their best to look ONLY AT THE EVIDENCE. Most students wanted to say something like "It is a plant cell because it has a cell wall, chloroplasts, chlorophyll and a large vacuole." However, when we placed them on the stand to "testify" in the case, the opposing counsel (myself and other students) would ask where they saw the chlorophyll. In some cases, I allowed students to state that their results were "inconclusive" because they were unable to identify the presence or lack thereof of those organelles. We had discussions about why artists portray the organelles in a certain way in textbooks. We looked at online pictures of mitochondria and saw those "squiggly lines"...

Thank you for your purchase, and I hope some of my comments helped.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching fifth grade for since I got my first teaching license in Indiana in 2006 and I still LOVE it!!!

MY TEACHING STYLE

I am passionate about teaching both math and science, so I am thrilled to find ways to use STEM challenges to integrate science, technology, engineering and math topics.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I earned my BS in Elementary Education from Indiana University in 2006. I am currently working on my masters in Methods and Curriculum with a concentration in Science.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

When I'm not teaching, I'm creating... I love sewing, scrapbooking, photography, home decorating, and designing new math and science lessons. Yes, that's right. Much of my "free time" is spent "working". But it's hard to think of it as work when it's what I LOVE so much!
