Hi Kim,

Thanks for your rapid response! I am in need of the full unit, is there anyway you can offer a discount if I purchase each lesson seperately? Thanks!

That's not something we can do through TPT. However, if you send an e-mail to cyaris@literacy-builders.com, I'd be happy to assist you through out site, www.literacy-builders.com.

I hope that helps.

Hi, Is this just a mini-lesson? Are there articles included which have slants to discuss? Thanks.

It is just a mini lesson. I can't include the articles because of copyright issues. Sorry.

Joette523 re: Noticing Clues to Help Us Know the Author's Purpose
Kim--
Are you kidding me? A half sheet of paper of lesson modeling, the other half devoted to a graphic organizer and your logo? For $2.99? You didn't even include the story excerpt you referred to as a starting point for the discussion! WHERE IS THE REST OF THE PACKET? If it doesn't exist, I want my money back.

Dear Joette,
I’m sorry that you don’t like the lesson on noticing clues to help you know the author’s purpose. However, my lessons are about sound instructional practice, not fancy presentation. Because of the laws governing copyright, I cannot offer customers the text from David Weisner’s book Hurricane. I don’t have permission from either the author or the publisher so that would be illegal. The idea is that you would obtain a copy of this picture book and ask them to cite evidence, which is a very Common Core aligned action. You might place the book under the document camera or scan a page from the text into a smartboard so that they can reread and notice the language used by the author that helps them understand the author’s message. In fact, while this lesson suggests that you use Hurricane, because it suggests a practice, or habit of mind, it can be repeated using a multitude of texts, making it more, not less, valuable.

I'm writing because in no way should you be embarrassed. Copyright issues are difficult at best; flat frustrating most other times. You are heads and shoulders above many folks in the world who don't offer any citation. Please leave the material up and just add the info on how to folks can find the original product.

You know, it strikes me that perhaps the two of us could have an exchange about teachers can share ideas on this site (which I think is great and I'm excited to begin posting some things here as well) and still protect copyrighted work. Perhaps we could convince web managers to post it on the front page of this site. I am positive that you aren't the only teacher who has wondered just when the citation is enough versus needing permission. The permissions folks at Heinemann constantly answer my questions for my own books about when citing is ok and when permissions need to be secured. I don't know how they keep everything straight.

So, seriously, no harm done. Add the rest of the info and we're good to go!

Hope you're having a good school year. Take a look at my most recent blog post at KyleneBeers.com. It's titled "Why I Hated Meredith's First Grade Teacher." You'll love it--I promise.

My best,
Kylene

Dear Kylene,
Thank you so much for being so understanding! I would love to have the exchange that you speak of--let's figure out what we need to do to make it happen!

I follow you on twitter so I am pleased to say that I have already read "Why you hated Meredith's First Grade Teacher." I did love it, but I have to add, the blog you wrote a few months back about talking to the cab driver in Baltimore is the one that sticks with me. To think that grandparents are thinking about their grandchildren as letters is blasphemous!

If it continues to be easiest to correspond here, please feel free. But if you'd like, my personal email is kyaris@literacy-builders.com.

You might also be interested to know that I write a blog, too, with Jan Miller Burkins at www.burkinsandyaris.com. We're trying to be at the cutting edge of the Common Core and have been posting five days a week on all things literacy and the Common Core for the past six months. We're working on a book but it feels like it'll be a long road to publication. We'll see....

Be well and thank you again for being so gracious,
Kim

Kim,

Thanks so much for creating a lesson you're selling on TeachersPayTeachers from It Says, I Say, and So. I continue to find that it is very helpful to struggling readers and hope you do, as well. Also, many thanks for mentioning When Kids Can't Read in your description of the product. I'm not sure how copyright issues are handled with this site, but generally when reproducing for sale something that is copyrighted by someone else, permission needs to be secured. While Heinemann should be the one to provide permission, I think that if you'll just go back into your description and add a parenthetical that says, "This book is available at www.Heinemann.com or on Amazon" that they wouldn't say anything. I'll tell them we've connected via email, and I was flattered that you thought enough of the strategy to post it yourself.

I've got a new book coming out in November titled Notice and Note. It's up already at Amazon and on the Heinemann site! I hope you'll give it a look.

Thanks again for mentioning the title of the book. I really appreciate it.

My best,
Kylene Beers

Dear Kylene,
Under normal circumstances, I'd be so excited to be corresponding with Kylene Beers, but I write this with my head bowed in shame. I am so sorry! I have thought often about copyright issues related to this site and I wonder how many times I may have unintentionally broken the rules. I would be happy to add the parenthetical like you requested but if you preferred, I will take the lesson down. To make it easy, if I don't hear back from you, you were satisfied with the reference to Heinemann and Amazon. If you'd prefer I take it down, simply jot me another quick note.

I look forward to your book. You can bet I'll be reading it! I'm a huge fan!
Sincerely,
Kim Yaris

I would like a refund. This was not worth the price. I thought the file would be longer than a page.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

In 2000, Kim Yaris, Literacy Builder’s Executive Director, traded her elementary classroom to pursue opportunities in other areas of education: professional development for teachers and motherhood. It didn’t take her long to discover that these jobs have a lot in common. Both make you go to your core and question who you are and what you are all about. Both force you to second guess your judgment and constantly ask, “Am I doing this right?” Both require a great deal of learning.
