Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I totally agree with writing outside of a cliche and the value of being able to use a basic event as a way to provide a glimpse into what motivates the student. And I will say that the "Chipotle" essay certainly stimulated class debate. I like a little irreverence but think we still need to follow the rules of grammar and make sure the writing does not slop over into the casual. Many of us work in more conservative work environments, for better or for worse, or have students who are applying to religious schools. I am not offended, so no need to apologize. It's just a suggestion. No need for any free materials, and I totally hear what you are saying about engaging the creative side of the brain.

Specifically in the cow essay, the student writes about "The damn cow just wants to be milked," and "' 'cause profit is the name of the game." I understand that the students are attempting to make their essays stand out and to introduce a lesson in a lighthearted way, but I think they go a little too far in the informal direction (ex. an essay entitled "Doggy Poo") and feel that could be off-putting to admissions staff. I really like the the tips and the web exercise, just think better examples of essays can be found.

I would like to formally apologize for anything that offended you. In all of the years I've used these materials, the phrase in that essay has never come across to the students as anything more than emotion and imagery. I will, however, revise the document and send a note for an update tomorrow. The Doggy Poo essay was intended to give my students a look at a basic event, the story telling aspect, the use of imagery, the voice of the author, and the connection at the end. Typically I have students of varying experiences and abilities. I want them to understand that they don't have to write about the cliche tale of their greatest moment in their academic career, the epic tale of the game-winning catch, or the trying experience of their aunt's battle with cancer. I want them to see the beauty in the small moments, too. I especially want them to work the creative side of their brain as research shows that the most successful individuals with the most longevity in their schooling and careers are the ones who think creatively about a solution to a problem. But, I do feel bad if you are offended. Please feel free to message me if you need any free materials as a way for me to apologize and show my sincere appreciation for your help.

We made the 10th graders take it in June and anyone that failed will take it in January. My school is hoping very few kids will take the new test in June. My school is so concerned about Danielson that we've barely discussed the new Regents.

Ah, I see. Our department has really done a lot of work to sit down together and draw up a grade-by-grade plan for reading and writing strategies specific to what we've seen on the Common Core test. We have not distributed the test to the students, yet. The first group will go this June alongside the old Comprehensive Regents.

I do know that they updated the directions to Part 3 this fall. The directions now say to create a central idea. I'm still not sure I like the wording, but it is better than what it used to say. My department is also working really hard to search the website and the modules that are up there for more specifics on what they mean by "effect." There are too many directions to take that in, and without any concrete examples, we're afraid of what the expectations might be from the state. Any words to the wise from your end?

Not clear on your answer-clarification needed:

So, if I buy the Data-Driven Analysis and Common Core Ready-will I have everything that is in your Short Story Bundle? Or, will I have to buy both? And, I will have to buy the Unit Starter Activity separately, too? DO you give a discount for multiple purchases if this is the case?

Kimberly's Ideas  (TpT Seller)
Good question. I wish I had some control over the way things are purchased, or I would do that. But, let me see if I can explain it: the unit starter is in the bundled unit, but not the data driven unit. The data driven is similar to the bundle, but not the same. There are some shared products, and some that are different. For example, the note packets are similar, but the tests are different. I know that it's difficult to purchase, especially if you're nervous that you're buying the exact same thing. To help, can I email you the unit bundle and make sure you have the unit starter activity? Then if you want the data-driven unit, you can still get the benefits of that. I do suggest you purchase the data-driven unit as there are many useful up-to-date activities and materials that better reflect newer standards, testing, and teacher/student documentation of achievement. My email is kortiz@bathcsd.org. Send me an email and I'll get back to you tomorrow (I'm out with my family today). I hope this helps. Tell me if it doesn't because we can figure out a solution.

At this point, this is my first full unit like this. The only thing similar, which might be below grade level, and a bit obvious, is my freshmen short story unit. I am changing my short story unit (I haven't tried it yet) to be similar. They will read a short story for homework, we will discuss the story and its literary attributes on the first day. The second day will be time for writing a structured paragraph (I'm just sticking to question 27 with them) and reading the next story. The unit for Death of a Salesman wasn't hard to put together. It just required picking out major themes from the literature that I then had to find in two poems to accompany with that similar theme to write question 26 of the Regents. I can send you the unit to see, if that helps. Just send me your email address.

Hi Kimberly,
It was my first time using this site and, without realizing it I bought some of your things twice. I purchased the whole unit for the Odyssey, and at the same time I purchased duplicates of activities such as the venn diagram, the critical lens question and the quest and hero notes. Although I read the descriptions, I thought the individual activities were extensions to the package, not already part of it. Wish I could undo my error, but I guess there is nothing I can do now, right?

We use the textbook, Adventures in Reading. We often have to supplement some of the stories as the textbook has just summary versions of the less prominent parts of the story. Adventures in Reading only gives the verse (in translation) version of the more prominent stories. But we just recently purchased a more novel-sized book that has better summary versions of the less prominent versions of the story. I'd tell you exactly who the publisher was, but I happen to be at home on maternity leave. If I think of it, when I get into my classroom, I'll send you a message. We cover The Odyssey in 9th grade, so we plan to flip back and forth between the verse version and some of the summary. We really haven't been very happy with the options available to us. I'm assuming you're finding the same issue?

There isn't technically an accompanying teacher packet. There are pages of teacher notes for the Trojan War, myth hero, and hero journey. It’s hard to put together a teacher packet for the story specifically, as there are many translations and made-for-school versions. The textbook we have breaks down some parts of the story into simple summaries that are missing specifics about the events, lands, and monsters. The teacher notes I use for the SmartBoard just do not work for all teachers. Thanks for your interest!

Hello!

I purchased the short story unit bundle, and I love it. . .soooo helpful. Would you be willing to send me the note template and the test in word? I would like to swap out a story and add two more, and I would love for everything to look as great as you have designed it. I am not computer savvy, so I love your products for all I am unable to do technically. I understand if the answer is no, but i just wanted to check. Keep up the great work (I am a frequent buyer).

Buyer re: Of Mice and Men Chapter Questions
I want to purchase your chapter questions for Of Mice and Men, but I just scanned through the preview and already see several typos. I do not have a way to fix these with the file being a PDF. Do you have this in another file format so that I could fix the mistakes before handing it out to my students once I purchase it?

Thanks.

I just spent some time editing and revising the document. I have made several updates to the document for sale. If you haven't purchased it yet, it should much better now. Also, if you would like me to send you the Word version of the document by email for future updates or additions, I can do that. I usually publish my documents using PDF because of the font differences between computers. There's a good chance that the document's appearance in Word may be different on your computer than the way it looks in the PDF. But I have no problem sending that along to you. Just leave me an email address to send it to. Thanks for your help! I’m glad you are interested in my product!

I sent you an email with the "Entire Short Story Unit Bundle" and another packet I use with my Seniors that I do not currently have for sale on my site. There should be some new materials there for you to work with, different from what you have already purchased. I hope I have been helpful! Let me know what you think.

Buyer re: Shakespeare: Learning his language through Yodish (as in Yoda)
I am designing an online 9th grade English course for a public school district near Richmond, Virginia. One of the units is on Romeo & Juliet. I would like to know what your terms of use would be to use your "Yoda" materials in the course. The course is delivered via the Blackboard software platform and is a password-protected environment, accessible only to the 50-100 students who would be enrolled at any one time. Your materials would not be out on the world-wide web. Will you grant me permission to use the materials? Thank you so much.

I just purchased a number of your products and have a couple of questions. I purchased both the "First Day of School Listening Activity" and "Reading Unit/Short Story Unit Starter Activity" and they are the exact same activity. Is there an error? I also purchased "Teaching Body Paragraphs to Any High School Level." I would appreciate some explanation of the microscope analogy to body paragraphs. How do you teach this unit? Thank you so much. Besty,

I apologize for the issue with the “First Day” and “Short Story Unit Starter” activities being the same. With the number of people using TpT for selling, my products often get lost amongst the others and they don’t sell. So, sometimes, if I really believe in an activity, I will sell it under 2 names so that it shows up in searches more often. I never intended for this to happen to you, and never expected it to be an issue, which is why I wanted you to know the truth. Since I have no power over reimbursing you, I can send you some more short story activities at no cost. Specifically, I have an activity that is a literary element game. I took the same short story, “An Arrest,” and had students get into groups of 2. We read the story out loud as a group, students had highlighters in hand, and when I called “time” the groups began. The students had to write down as many literary elements/techniques with examples as they could. The group with the most correct got packs of gum. The activity would be useful for both review, and to kick start a unit on literature. The best part of this game was how everyone participated and really enjoyed themselves. The creativity in answering was fantastic. I can send you this, and some other activities. I have an M&M activity for note-taking that comes with a $20 bundle of short story lesson ideas and packets. I can also send you another SHORT short story so you can still do both a first day activity and unit starter activity without repeating the same story. If this is okay, send me your email and I will get those activities to you.

As far as the body paragraphs packet goes, I use this with my Juniors. Even though it seems lower-level, it really gave us a language to use for the organization of a paragraph. The microscope metaphor I used on the Smartboard to demonstrate how a scientist can’t view the specimen without looking first through the eye piece. When they see the specimen through the eye piece, they must then use the adjustment levers to see and analyze it more clearly. The base is the foundation that is necessary for holding everything together. The same goes for a paragraph. The reader needs a topic sentence to establish and begin the analysis. The levers and adjustments are needed for adding to the topic sentence (the details) that allows for the reader to picture and understand more clearly. I also explain that a quote is needed from the text to really bring the idea home. This goes closer to the end of the paragraph to prove the details true. The base of the microscope is like a wrap up or connection to both the topic sentence and the thesis statement. It supports all of the findings, allowing the writer and reader to fully understand each other. The students play with the idea of a metaphor to create their own. Many of my students are into cars and mechanics. They drew engines and car parts, explaining how they all play on each other to achieve a goal. The strength of the car part is in its organization, which is the same for a paragraph. We use the strong and weak examples to explain how they do not resemble the microscope concept. The students love to play teacher, using different colored pencils to highlight the differences in the paragraphs. When they are done, we use the extra microscope worksheet to demonstrate how the strong example fits the analogy. You could easily revise the worksheet to fit with a text that your class has already read. The last worksheet, the quotation/passage graphic organizer is used to review that when adding a quote from the text, the writer must lead the reader into the quote with a phrase, and out of the quote with an additional sentence explaining the importance of the quote. My students leave me with an exit pass, an activity to prove that they understood, by using one of the metaphors from class to write a strong body paragraph on a text they have recently read.

I hope this helps! Let me know if there are more questions!

WebQuests as an intergrated technology project have been around before my free download was created. I just simplified the proces by creating a"how to." How you make your WebQuests is up to you. For obvious reasons, you cannot resell my free download. If you have questions as to what is acceptable for sale on TpT, you should speak with Paul, the man who runs TpT. He can clarify any confusion you have.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

As a New York State teacher of 7 years, I have come to truly understand the requirements of modern-day education. Currently a high school teacher of grades 9,11, 12, I do have experience in grades 6, 7, and 8. A 1 students to 1 computer initiative in my classroom, and the use of the latest modern technology, sets the bar in my school for 21st century learning. My age and recent tenure award have allowed me to have the fresh knowledge of successful educational practices, and creativity that will intrigue today's student.

MY TEACHING STYLE

A successful high school lesson and unit must do the following: require the student to be responsible for his/her understanding; challenge the student to think beyond the obvious, gathering a deeper understanding; integrate technology; and offer many differentiated options for varying learning styles.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I have attended several technology conferences, including the nationally known technology conference, ISTE. My classroom has become a 21st century classroom, including 1 computer to every 1 student. I have been recognized by my fellow area educators for my work to enhance the classroom and learning experience for my students.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

As a New York State teacher I come with the prestige of the New York State Certified Professional Educator certification. I have a Bachelor's of Arts degree in English Education, and a Master's Degree in General Education with a concentration in English Literature. My education continued outside of college as I have over 350 hours of observation and student-teacher training. As I have been teaching on my own for 6 years, I continue to attend education development seminars and training sessions.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I am an ambitious, often overly perfectionistic, English teacher looking to continue to refine my skills. I solely believe in learning from my own mistakes and the criticism I receive from the people I work with (and teach to). I have been blessed to start a family with my husband after the recent birth of our son, Owen. I am truly happy with what life has brought us thus far, and I look forward to what the future will bring!
