Can you explain a little more what this packet includes. We are having a sheep come to class and be sheared. The discussion will be about how clothing is made from the wool. This will be with a class of Pre k kids. How well will this packet mesh?

Thank you for your interest in I Need a Coat, based on Charlie Needs a Cloak by Tomie dePaola. Our KinderLit books that are based are literature all include pages for the children to create their own versions of the story, complete directions for making those pages, and a photo page that shows the finished pages. Each of the student pages has a word or two left out that they write.

This is a simply book that has only 5 student pages and a cover. On the first page the children create a sheep with cotton balls. On the second page they make a wash tub with bubbles showing how the wool has to be cleaned and can be dyed using beets or other veggies. We dye fabric with the children and then cut it into strips for them to weave onto the third page. The fourth page uses magazines for the children to cut out articles of clothing to glue into their books to show that cloth gives us clothing. And the last page the children create a paper collage coat just like Charlie's cloak!

Although our books were created for kindergartners, there are ways to adapt them for pre-K, such as dotting in the words before running off the copies so the children just have to trace the letters instead of copying a word from the white board. The illustrations in this book are simple so you shouldn't have to make any adaptations with them for your pre-K students.

How exciting to have a live sheep sheared at school! Enjoy that experience! We're sure you'll love our I Need a Coat book too!

Hey! My students are going to do a character study of Peter using the books Whistle for Willie, Pet Show, Peter's Chair, and The Snowy Day. Is this resource for a character study, or what exactly is it? Thanks! :)

Hi Rachel,
Yes, this would be a great resource for you! When you purchase one of our KinderLit books, you get the reproducible pages so that each child in your class makes their own book to take home. You also get all the directions for each page and a photo page showing the finished pages the way we did them.

In our Ezra Jack Keats book, we provide pages for these books:
The Snowy Day
Whistle for Willie
Jennie's Hat
The Trip
Goggles!
A Letter to Amy
Peter's Chair

You would not need to do all those pages - just pick and choose the ones that fit your purpose.

We also used Peter for a character study and did a graphic organizer with the following sections: Self, Family, Friends, Favorites. Every time we read a book with Peter in it, we added to the chart. The children loved trying to figure out how old Peter was in each story. When they gave a guess, they had to give a reason for it. For example in The Snowy Day many would guess he was 4 or 5 because his mom had to help him with his snowsuit. But in Whistle for Willie he was older because he could go to the store by himself!

You can check out more about our books at www.KinderLit.com. Or please contact me personally at lmburns2@gmail.com. We used to sell a short author study about Ezra that included the book and I still have the unit on my computer. I would be glad to send it to you but I can't attach a file here!

Thanks for your interest in our Three Little Pigs book! TPT is having a sale on Sunday, Feb. 3 and we will be participating in it too. Our products do seem expensive compared to the other worksheet type activities that are listed on TPT; but our products are more than worksheets and allow your students to become authors and illustrators of their own versions of literature while learning basic skills. We have been in business for over 12 years and have yet to come across any unique product like ours. Many other sellers have books to make with children but ours are based on pieces of literature and are not just “skill oriented” pages.

Watch for notices about the sale on Super Sunday!

Hi, Thanks for your interest in our Gingerbread Senses book which contains 5 pages for the children's books (those are the blacklines) and one cover for it as well as two pages of directions and a photo page showing you the finished pages of the student book as we did it.

The wording on each page of the kids' books is like a rebus story (please see the sample image again) with a missing word that the children write in. The students do their own illustrations - we don't give our kids templates to trace because that doesn't make them think, measure, plan, and problem solve.

Instead, we give them squares and rectangles approximately the size they need and show them how to trim off the corners and then give the little points "haircuts!" They create their own circles and ovals which are the two basic shapes for most of the illustrations in our books. As far as placing the shapes in the right spot, the children have to do the thinking of where to put them so that they will have room for the remaining shapes without covering up the lettering. We like to put all the thinking and problem solving onto the children! We also model the page in our books in front of the children and leave it on our chalkboards for them to refer back to.

We have a free document called KinderLit Cutting Directions that you can download at: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Kinderlit/Order:Best-Sellers/Search:cutting%20directions/ If that link doesn't work, do a search on TPT for KinderLit Cutting Directions. Thanks for your comments! Our products are more then worksheets and allow your students to become authors and illustrators of their own versions of literature while learning basic skills. We have been in business for over 12 years and have yet to come across any unique product like ours. Many other sellers have books to make with children but ours are based on pieces of literature and are not just “skill oriented” pages.

KinderLit also offers a variety of worksheet activities which can be used as booklets for language arts and/or math stations. These range in price from $1 to $7. We’ll also be posting several activities for specific pieces of literature such as Silly Sally for only $1.

We recently reduced our prices from $9.75 to $8.50 and have sales several times a year. Please watch for our books to go on sale - usually at a 20% discount.

We have confidence that once you see the learning that happens with our books and the excitement your students will have reading, you’ll be glad that you purchased one!

Ocotillo
Jackrabbit
Sahuaro
Tortoise
Javelina
Palo Verde tree
Citrus tree
Snake
Coyote

We included the two different types of trees since we teach in Phoenix, AZ, and the Palo Verde tree is our state tree. The area also has many citrus groves!

Hi Julie, Thanks for your interest in our KinderLit book, I'm Ready for Kindergarten. Many teachers use it during the first week or so of school and then put it out for Parent Night or Back to School Night. There are only 6 pages in this book - simple to do for the beginning of Kindergarten! I guess only the cover page showed up online so I just uploaded a sample page from the inside of the book.
You will see page 2 that says "I'm ready to build with blocks." The first page is for their name and has a place for them to draw their face. Page 3 says "I'm ready to paint" Page 4 says "I'm ready to learn my letters." Page 5 says "Im ready to count." And page 6 says "I'm ready to make new friends."
There are many ways to illustrate these pages that you'll see in the directions. There is only one missing letter on each page for the children to write since they are too new to copy complete words!
Please contact us again if you have any other questions.

I am trying to respond to your question, but I don't know how t respond. I am new to all of this. Anyway, I LOVE the packet and so thankful for the work you all put into it. I did modify the letters at the bottom of the page so that my kids could practice tracing the letters. I may then add writing lines so that the kids can write their own letters too. At the top of the page I wrote What begins with _____ ? The kids write the letter we are practicing on the line. I am still playing with the packet so I may also add A ________________ begins with _____. in a box below the drawing box so the kids can work on writing. I hope this makes sense to you. Thanks again

The Very Busy Spider
The Grouchy Ladybug
The Mixed-Up Chameleon

Of course you do not need to do all those pages! We usually do only 5 in the book and one more as the cover. We also have done a sun on the cover because Eric Carle has said that his books all contain the sun and that the stories take place in one day. We do a chart as a whole class on whether the books really do have a sun!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Lisa and Linda have over 60 years combined experience teaching kindergarten in Arizona, Washington, and Massachusetts.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Lisa and Linda love to make books with their students! Using real literature, they have created versions for the children to make so they will have books to read at home. Every page requires the children to write one or two missing words as well as create the illustrations usually with collage. Included in each KinderLit book are a photo page of every finished page in the book, complete directions, and all the reproducible black lines for the student book. Your students too can make their own books to take home!

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT
