These topics can be used throughout our English department, and the whole school as "Step Up to Writing" essays. Thanks for your great products.

I was somewhat disappointed. The type is too small. Not enough "white space" on the paper. I teach resource English. My students need size 14 font and fewer words on each page.

Hello dhisaw:
I apologize that the Among the Hidden Literature Guide was not what you were looking for. The lack of "white space" and the 10-12 point font were intentional, as I found that too many existing guides out there had too much "white space," large font, and not enough real, usable content. We strove for quality and content, and to offer a product superior to other guides out there. Since you are not pleased, I would be happy to refund your money in full. Please contact me at kbowers@4secondarysolutions.com and I will arrange it.
Sincerely, Kristen Bowers

We use Accelerated Reader at my school, so the kids are given a list of books, many of which they haven't heard of, to choose from. This is a great, concrete method for them to pick up a few of those books and make a choice.

This is a great resource, but I fear that my students will be confused by the flowchart format. Otherwise, a creative, concise, practical guide.

This is one of the best essay lessons I have ever come across. It is time consuming in the beginning. but the kids really "get it"!
Posted on: September 23, 2006

Thanks so much, Jessica! I have found that once I take the time to really teach my students the essential skills at the beginning, I never have to go back and teach them these skills. That is the beauty of this program...by getting the students to learn the essentials in a step-by step manner, they feel less overwhelmed and intimidated about writing. Once they realize they have been learning how to write an essay even though those early steps, they are ecstatic--because later they KNOW that they then have the skills to write a great essay!

This is absolutely an invaluable resource. Writing is the most difficult part of English to teach, and the area most students are weak. This resource truly supplements my instruction.
I will incorporate these lessons more thoroughly next semester and compare student success.

I have just purchase this writting system. It seems very thorough on expository, compare/contrast and others but lacking on persuasive essays. There is only one page of a scaffold for this type. While the general info applies; the practice essays do not include examples of persuasive essays. I like the activity sheets, there seems to be ample practice for putting together all types of essays except for persuassive.

Found one error: Crossword Puzzle for Chapters 6-10. There is an extra box for #1 down. The key and handout are made to accomodate "s-w-i-l-l-i-i-n-g" , but there should only be one "i" after the double "l" ....."s-w-i-l-l-i-n-g" .

This was a very helpful starting point for me.
I added some Elizabethen music and changed the background and fonts. There are some interesting free "Shakespeare" fonts that can be found with a simple internet search (free shakespeare ttf). I made all the files forward by phyiscal prompt so that I could add commentary and explanation.
I teach special ed. seniors and created a guided note sheet so they could watch the presentation for information and fill in the notes as they watched. This kind of assist is very useful for these particular students.
However - not starting from scratch was a huge help! Thanks.

Since I've never taught The Crucible, I found this guide invaluable. Although my instincts on how to teach the play are in line with Mrs. Bowers', I didn't have the time to prepare my own guide nor Mrs. Bowers' experience and stamina (smile).

A pretty good study guide. With excellent mix and match style worksheets. It tends to be very vocabulary heavy. With a large percentage of the worksheets being based on an arbitrary vocabulary list. Also the portion on point of view slightly misuses third person limited by summarizing the text instead of changing the point of view. The chapter quizzes tend to ask open ended, opinion questions...instead of more objective style questions (true/false, multiple choice) that check comprehension.

This material is very helpful to get me started with this book. It is very thorough and has many activities. In particular, the number of readings on the context and background are very helpful. However, I believe I found an innacurate piece of information on one of the historical background pages, which makes the otherwise helpful page difficult to use in the classroom. On the page describing The Great Migration it says: "When the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, approximately 92% of the African American population lived in the North or Midwest." This is not accurate nor does it make sense with the information presented in the rest of the paragraph. Has this been looked at? Or am I missing something?
Thanks,
Elizabeth

WOW! Thanks Elizabeth, for the catch. It actually should read "When the Emancipation Proclaimation was signed, approximately 92% of the African-American population lived in the South." (This is according to the Library of Congress.) Clearly, that was a typo which will be corrected ASAP. Thanks again.
