Buyer re: Organizing Social Studies Projects For Any Content (W/Rubrics) Gr.6-9
This product is a great idea! I have a few questions for you. When you give them a section, do you give them guiding questions? Or particular people and events that they need to be learning about? How does the rest of the class get the content? Do they have a graphic organizer or notes that they must complete as the group presents?
I do like the idea of the student reflection after the presentation. Do you ever do feedback from their peers so that they can improve their presentations?

Hi Lisa! I've done it differently over the years. With our SS, there is a guiding question with each chapter that every section applies to. I have done graphic organizers and mini presentations of the content for other groups to get the info and/or had students read the other content, but not do an entire project on it, but perhaps more literal questions. Yes to peer feedback - always! Hope that helps!

Krystal, my son (5th grade) was given a paper bag book report project and there were a couple of things about the grading of it by his teacher that I wanted to ask you about. The scoring was 50 points, as described by you. The teacher used your scoring rubric. My son completed the project on time and handed it in on time. When he got it back, I was surprised that he only got 37 out of 50 points. For one thing, he got only 1 point for his description of the setting, even though he wrote a complete and accurate description. The reason? He neglected to focus his drawing on the setting. It was a drawing of a main character. He simply forgot that the drawing had to be about the setting. Does your rubric really demand that he get only one point? Question 2. This is the biggie. He got 5 points taken off. That's 10 percentage points! Why? This is hard to explain. It is certainly not in the rubric. The teacher gave each student a copy of the rubric so they would see how they would be scored as they were putting their projects together. So far, so good. But, she said she would subtract 5 points from their grade if they did not turn the rubric back in to the teacher!! By the way, this was not written down anywhere. I didn't know anything about points
being taken off. This was only a verbal request. To me, scoring
the project in this manner makes absolutely no sense at all. I am so pissed that my son's project was not scored according to the rubric. My son did not turn in the rubric "on time" because my wife had accidentally tossed it in the recycling bin. So, he could not find it. When my son and I could not find the rubric the day he was turning in the project, I told him not to worry. After all, she can easily run off another copy. No big. Hah! The teacher was upset. I did some detective work the next day and found it in the recycling bin. But he still got docked 5 points and was forced to be the last presenter (days later). Does this make sense as a proper method of grading the project as you had intended?

There are lots of options. Maybe if students want to keep things simpler, they could focus on just one transformation- like rotation. Get them to make a list of things that spin - fan, helicopter, windmill.... then focus on one to draw. The same thing works for translations - what "slides"? Basketball being bounced, a fish swimming in the ocean, a shooting star...Then have students see which of these things they think they'll be most successful with by spending some time sketching. In my experience, reflections have usually been part of another transformation when they are included. I hope that helps!

Hello there! I've had teachers let me know that they've used activities with struggling students (I have as well). The nature of the activities is a bit more engaging than the standard problems from a text book method.

As for your state standards, I can not really comment on that. I am in Canada and I haven't purposely aligned all of my products with your CCSS. That being said, I know that many of your standards are addressed within most of the products that I have listed (I've been told by buyers). I do find that there are different standards/expectations between countries and depending on grade levels and so it would depend what standards in particular you were hoping to address with this math package. I hope this helps.

That is true, however for calculation purposes (we do not require scientific calculators for our grade sevens with the pi button - I teach gr 7) we use 3.14 to represent pi. I hope that makes sense! But thanks for the clarification - I know that I loosely use "pi = 3.14" with the understanding that teachers and students know that the number doesn't end at the 4...for simplicity sake, it's left at 3.14.

I think for any school reform to really work, we need to find a way for students and teachers to have open, honest dialog where students feel safe offering candid feedback. We (both teachers and parents) have become so defensive. And teachers need to be comfortable getting candid feedback from parents, and vice-versa. But finding time in our already overpacked days is a challenge.

I totally agree with teachers getting feedback. You may like one of my previous blog posts on the subject. I ask students to assess my teaching at the end of the year (more if I can) so that I am able to improve. It's anonymous and I give them examples of things that would be helpful vs hurtful. Krystal, Thanks once again for your thoughtful response. And I apologize for coming off so negative and I regret that I can't edit my public comment. It was a visceral reaction to so many projects my own children have had to do. My oldest is quite analytical, perhaps a bit aspergerie, and would have knots in his stomach for weeks if required to draw or present. No amount of support, reassuring, or offering to talk to the teacher on his behalf would mitigate it. (The worst was a 7th grade teacher who required that the final book talk be sung, or rapped, or sung by a "hired" friend.) This, and talking to other parents who dread "project" assignments, has truly guided me as a teacher. I now require little homework, only "thinkwork," (and the research doesn't support it), provide materials and support and time for projects in class, and I ALWAYS encourage students to propose alternatives to assignments. And I encourage them to advocate for themselves in the future and help them find ways to talk to teachers about alternative assignments. Sadly, there are still far too many in-the-box teachers who are squelching the creativity and spirit of many children.

I understand where you are coming from. I always ask my students for different ways that they would like to present/be assessed. We share that belief.

Ironically enough, this project was spawned from my students themselves four years ago, a talented group - who were trying to come up with a different way to present Tuck Everlasting. The project came from students being asked their opinion and was offered that year as ONE way to present the novel that we'd covered as a class. I am sorry for the experience your child has had in school and for all of the children who don't feel comfortable enough to speak to their teacher about how they may present/be assessed in class. I always do my best for each child and hope that no child ever feels the way you've described, because of something I've asked them to do.

Krystal, Thank you for your thoughtful response and clarifications. It's clear that you are flexible with your assignments and would offer this as one of several options for sharing a book. I think it would be helpful to be clear about the flexibility in the instructions. I would give some examples of alternative ways to illustrate the setting for those who prefer not to draw. My school is high poverty, so students have to be able to use a computer and printer at school. In addition, rather than requiring 10 items in the bag (which is arbitrary), why not ask for "several" items that symbolize or represent an aspect of the story. Some children can easily think of more than 10, while others might do well to come up with one, particularly those who are more analytical. Most importantly, allow some students to pass on this activity and share their book in a way that is meaningful for them and in keeping with their particular learning styles and intelligences. So as long as this is offered as one path to sharing the book, I think it's a cute activity. And for those who want to do the Book in a Bag report, allow them flexibility w/in the structure. For example, in some books it might be a tall order to name ALL the characters discussed (and, unless the teacher has read the book this is impossible to asses). Asking for exactly 10 items is arbitrary. Don't box them into 10. (I didn't find anything in the rubric that scores them on the number of items.) I like to preview directions with my students and brainstorm revisions before we get started. And they often come up with ideas/solutions that I wouldn't have thought of on my own. Many students need to be given room to think outside the box, or in the case, the bag!

No problem jolacey. I may go back to state some of those suggestions in the assignment so that it is clearer to teachers (in regards to illustration options). My school also has many students who are without, but we do have computers and a printer in the lab. Students are able to go there to collect art work online if they do not have computer access at home, but who still wish to take this route, rather than draw. As for the 10 items - yes perhaps somewhat arbitrary. I could have chosen 5 - again arbitrary. However, the point is that students are choosing items that really represent something from the novel and write a sentence strip to go with each explaining their reason for putting these into the bag (that's stated at the bottom of the rubric). I felt I had to choose a number, and therefore the 10 items work more like a checklist than a rubric (they have the item or they don't). Otherwise, would someone who brings in 10 items and someone who brings in 2 items be marked the same because they both brought in items? I didn't want another rubric and didn't want to expand the current one, so I used ten items, as I said, to act more like a checklist. Another teacher may choose to create a rubric to go with the items.

I've done this project as an assessment for books that we've covered as a class - because that suits me. That way, I've read the book and I know I've discussed that major themes, characters etc. with my kids. It would be more difficult to do with every student was reading a different book (although it could be done) and therefore I would choose to assess them in another way.

As I said before, this free download is meant to be a book report "option". It's not stated that it is the only way to assess, or that the download is a set of book report options. I just want to make that clear. Some downloads are meant to be multiple ways to review a book. This is meant to be a free download of ONE way teachers could allow students to review a book. Of course there are a thousand others. It's up to the professionalism of the teacher to know how they would like to assess students, or what they'd like to offer as assessment options. This download was simply meant to be one book review option - nothing more, nothing less.

On "Is That Divisible," how do you suggest students roll a number that is divisible by 10 since dice don't contain a zero?

Hi there! I reloaded all of the files into a zipped folder again. When I download it and extract the files - there are no issues. Go to where you made the purchase and try to unzip it again, as you normally do.

Have you tried saving it to your desktop, right click and open? I'm sure that's what you already tried. Email me at : krystallynnm@hotmail.com if you can't open it and I'll send you the files. Sorry - I'm not sure what the problem is.

Hi, thanks so much! The students will need a class or two to brainstorm/doodle their potenial designs. Depending on how quickly they can work, once they get thir first design, they're basically copying it, moving/transforming it in each new drawing. They could potentially do 2 or 3 pages a class or even more if their design is fairly simple. If they're working with a partner, they can make even better time because each can be drawing a new page at the same time and they'll complete the assignment twice as fast. Students will each need at least 30 minutes or so to physically scan in their pictures - this is what can take a while if a whole class is completing the assignment. This will also vary depending on how many sheets they are scanning. Finally, students need about 2 or so classes putting their slide shows together. I hope this helps. Every year will be different based on how many students are completing the challenge, the level of detail in their designs and how many pages they choose to complete.

I saw your posting on the Sellers Forum of Teachers Pay Teachers; so, I thought I would look at one of your freebies. I left you a rating. Well done! I have a couple of suggestions that might help to better market this product. First, create a cover page which can then be used as an attractive thumbnail to entice buyers. Then add a second page which is a directions or suggestion page. List several ways you use the pretest. Do you also give it as a posttest? Never assume that a buyer knows how, why, or when to use your product.

Thank you so much for taking your time to review my product and give feedback. I agree with you all the way around! I've been trying to get back to products that I posted a while back to get the cover page etc added. I find that as I put in more time on TpT, my products get better - now they all have cover pages, instructions, a page with links to my store and I spend a lot of time getting my thumbnails right. Thank you for reminding me that I need to get back to some of my older products to do some revisions.

Hi Ann Marie. It wasn't really that scientific, but it was fair. Each entry had a number based on when they entered the contest. I entered those numbers - we'll say, 1-50 for 50 entrants into a "random number generator" and I went with the numbers that the generator gave me. If I had 5 winners, I took the first five numbers generated...7, 2, 35, 36, and 49...for example. There are tons of "random number generators" online that you could use. Hope this helps:) Oh, and if you want or need another seller to offer goods as prizes - you can count me in if you'd like (no pressure...not sure what type of contest you're running;)

Actually, on blogger, I have the option to add authors....so, that would be easy.
I was hoping to cover various levels, since primary grades are so successful in TpT....so, it seems that we are on the same page. I actually was talking to Rachel Lynette about creating products in K and 2nd that I used when I taught those grades and she said she was doing some of the same stuff. So, definitely not glued to middle school or ELA.
I do not want you to feel obligated to do anything, I just wanted to throw it out there. Just know the offer stands, and I totally get it if you want your own.

Thanks about the newsletter! I was SOOOOO pumped!!! I am hoping the results will convince my husband I'm not "playing" on the computer. Ha!

I hear you about the husband thing - they just don't understand, do they?

About the sales - this was my third quarter and my first paper cheque ever. I made twice what I made from Feb - June altogether. Just takes time.
Give yourself another couple of months - I have a feeling you'll be getting a cheque soon - especially with the blog getting established.

I was thinking, maybe if/when I get a blog on the go we could use each other's blog/store for contests perhaps? They could choose a product from either store (and maybe we could grab a few other sellers as well)...it could be marketed on The Lesson Cloud, too - definitely possibilties!

It's quite obvious that I want to start a blog - I keep coming back to it and getting excited! Thanks for planting the seed again, I'm sure that there's a way - even if we don't co-author, that we will be able to help build each other's following:) Keep in touch!

Let me know if you have a blog idea or would like to do one together---we made mention of it a while back? However, I've started one of my own (thanks for joining), BUT----I feel like I don't have many ideas for postings...ha! Wow...seems pitiful.

I totally understand if you don't want to fool with it. However, I know you do teach 7th language arts, so we'd have some things in common to post about, amongst others and you seem to be good at the contest stuff!

Actually, you and the others on TpT have been so inspiring with all of your blogs! I've been looking into starting a blog again this weekend actually. I'm very jealous of you for having yours well under way!!!

Still fooling around with what focus to take for my own.

I have a LA and Math focus and then some other classroom management things in my TpT store.

My plan was to use some of the awesome ideas of the staff at my school (with their approval - of course) and have a "teaching ideas" type of blog...a place where I could do contests, post a great book title that I or another staffer has found, bulletin board ideas and of course my resources and lessons from TpT. I'm still playing around with my focus. I'm thinking that I'm going to try to build the blog with ideas, photos etc. as I build my TpT store. I only have 40 items - a lot are similar - not a lot to blog about there. Maybe that's also why you're struggling a little for topics. Think about it this way - not everyone that reads teacher blogs initally is looking to buy a product. So, blog about a great book you've read, post a bulletin board photo etc. My hope is to get followers for those things and that they'll click on TpT at some point to check things out. Then, you never know what will happen.

My school is a K-7 (at the moment...our new school is scheduled to open in 2014). So, if I joined in on your blog, I would have ideas for lower grades as well. I've also taught 8-9 and so some of my lessons are for those grades. Are you trying to stay mainly LA or mainly junior high? I was thinking if I was going to start a blog that I'd post ideas that may be for various grades, even though my products will be focused at Grade 6-9.

BTW, thanks so much for the invite to join in on your blog somehow. I wonder how we could make it work...

Oh and nice to see you featured in the newsletter! I know how hard you must be working:) Good for you!

Buyer re: Back to School: Turn the First Days of School into PD for Students
I am looking for a system to organize students to help in the classroom. I have jobs such as errands, passing out notices/papers...no problems with these. It is the 'organizing recycling, picking up papers from the floor' that is challenging to get helpers. I teach a gr.6/7 and would like a fun way to get students to take ownership for keeping the class clean. Do you have a ideas for that?

Hello! I don't have any resources posted on that topic. Just off the top of my head... Put every job you need completed on a piece of paper. If you need 4 people to clean up the floor - write "clean up the floor" on four pieces of paper or index cards, we'll say,...three to do recycling etc. Have a scavenger hunt! Post the jobs - faced down all around your room (under chairs, desks, by the bookshelf, by your desk...etc. Whatever paper they find is their job for the month. Have a new hunt the next month. OR you could do a "mission impossible" type thing. Come in with sealed envelopes and tell them that this is their mission - should they choose to accept it. Inside each - their task for the month - if done to your satisfaction...perhaps they'll receive a reward... Just some thoughts...

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching for 8 years now. I currently teach Grade 7 Math, Social Studies, Language Arts, Career Explorations and Health but I have taught grades 3 to 9, multiple subjects. My passion is teaching Math, for sure. I love the challenges that middle school students bring to the room every day. It's a very special age to be a part of. They teach me so much.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I am full of energy and fresh ideas. I love taking risks in the classroom - even when they don't pay off. To me, that's just part of the learning process. I am not afraid to fall on my face and I think it's healthy for my students to see me try and then try again, if things don't work out. I strive to make my lessons and activities as fun and engaging as possible. I like to incorporate hands-on activities whenever I can. I love using Math stations!

I teach in PEI, Canada and attended UPEI for my BEd. My undergrad was in Psychology and Sociology. As well, I have taken extra courses in Assessment and Inclusive Education since becoming a teacher. I plan on doing my Master's whenever my babies are a bit older:)

I am a mom of 2 energetic boys. I have been happily married to my high school sweetheart since 2004. I love teaching and only ever wanted to be a teacher.
