Hi there - I use this material to supplement a fantasy novel or short stories. It's individual lessons of various elements of fantasy ( for example, witches, spells, etc), as well as games and activities. If you would like to see it in greater detail, send me an email and I can send additional material for you to examine.

Hi Leslie,
I just purchased your WTW Within Words Stage Unit. I'm jumping off the deep end here in 4th grade and this is just what I needed! Thank you. I do think I am needing the Late Alphbetic Stage as well as the Syllables/Affixes Stage Units. I do see that you have the complete package available for all 4 stages~ but I do not want to purchase the Within Words Stage again. Any suggestions on making a purchase? Thanks a bunch, Melissa Shaver

If you would like a specific package put together, please let me know and I can bundle that and post it in my store for purchase. As you get started, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns and I'll help you as best I can. Also, I will be updating the WTW lessons this month. Previous purchasers will be able to get the updates lessons for free. Send me an email at ledickson@wsd1.org and I'll forward them. I hope this helps.

Thanks,

Hi Kara - It depends upon which book you are using for comparison. I used a combination of the following:
1. Words Their Way: Word Study for Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling Instruction (5th Edition)
2. World Their Way with Struggling Readers: Word Study for Reading, Vocabulary, and Spelling Instruction, Grades 4-12
3. Individual Words Their Way Sorting books (i.e. Word Sorts for Within Word Pattern Spellers).

If you would like, please send me an email with the specific sorts/features you are looking for and we can see if I can put together a useful package for you. Thank you. ledickson@wsd1.org

Hi again, as I mentioned, these lessons were developed with older learners in mind. That being said, WTW is a K-12 program, and I used the grade 4-12 book to develop these lessons. I believe they would be suitable, but you know your students best. The lessons include all word sorts and activities. Just print, cut and go. However, as I stated in my previous message, please email me at ledickson@wsd1.org and I would be more than happy to send you another lesson for you to look at.

So does this include all of the word sorts/materials that is included in the Words their Way book-alphabetic spellers? Hi Jennifer, thank you for you interest. It is frustrating buying something you won't end up using. If you download the preview, I've attached a copy of the lesson sequence so you'll know exactly what features are included in the file. The Early Alphabetic Stage includes lessons for same-vowel word families, digraphs and blends. They only lessons not includes are initial sound sorts. I want to make sure you're happy with your purchase, so if you would like, please send me an email at ledickson@wsd1.org and I would be more than happy to send you another full lesson for you to look at.

Is the sample the first lesson in the derivational stage? My principal purchased the student workbooks. I left my TE at school and needed to put together some plans.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question. Lol. I am a math teacher who was just informed that I have to teach Language Arts and use this program.

Hi There. Thank you for your interest, and it's not a stupid question. I had to teach math in my first few years of teaching and felt a little lost as well.

The lesson plan included in the preview is not the first lesson suggested in the program; it's the third lesson in "Additional Suffixes and Prefixes".

It is recommended that you start derivational students with a preview of the suffixes and prefixes studied in the "Syllables and Affixes" stage. Once they have reviewed the most common ones, they begin derivational study with "Additional Suffixes and Prefixes". The free preview includes a list of the suggested lesson sequence. All these lessons are included in the paid download.

I'm not sure what age level you teach, but please note that I developed these lessons with older learners in mind (upper elementary to late high school). This is a program that is taught in all English classes at our school and I wanted to make the program as easy to follow as possible for my fellow teachers. This is why I developed these lessons. So they would have access to detailed lesson plans, along with all materials and blackline masters necessary to teach it.

Please don't hesitate to contact me again if you have any further questions. Good luck. :)

Hi There. It depends upon the lesson. I've set my program up on a Monday to Friday schedule. The students in Early Alphabetic do a picture sort on Monday to introduce the weekly feature; Tuesday-Thursday are games/activities, such as Concentration, picture hunts, letter tile activities (Build, Blend and Extend), Match (played like "War"), Bingo, etc. to practice their feature of the week (the specific games change from week to week); and Friday is test day.

If the preview was not enough for you to gage the unit, please send me your email address at ledickson@wsd1.org, and I'll be more than happy to send you another sample lesson. Thank you.

Hi Leslie,
I have a few questions as this is the first large novel I will be doing in class. I am curious how much time you allowed for this novel study. Do you have a calendar of any kind to follow? Also, I teach 9th grade in the inner city and struggle with students completing their work on time. How much reading outside of class do you recommend?

Thanks so much and I look forward to hearing from you.

Leslie Dickson  (TpT Seller)
Hi Gina. I'm assuming you are speaking about "Divergent". I developed this novel with my grade 9's in mind. I teach "regular" grade nine and "low enrollment/special education" grade nine. With my low-enrollment, struggling readers, I did this novel as a read-aloud in class (we read everyday). It would have been too hard for some of them to read independently. This took longer, but it was important for them to be able to relax and hear the story, and then we would discuss the plot, characters, setting, etc. together. I also used the "guided reading" portion with them. It helped them with language skills and with imagery. Some of the activities in the unit were done as a class and some were done independently (for marks). Doing this novel as a read-aloud in class will take you about 4-6 weeks, depending upon how much you chunk.

With my "regular" grade nine's, as there were still struggling readers in this class, I mixed home reading with class reading. I would assign 2-3 chapters over the weekend (about 20 pages) and then we would read the next few chapters in class.

I hope this helps. Don't hesitate to send another message if you have more questions. Good luck! :)

Hi There. I've included a mid-novel test on the first 20 chapters, but opted to go with projects rather than a final test. The test includes matching questions for factions, characters, and vocabulary, plot sequencing, and short answer questions. I've also included an answer key for the mid-novel test. I'm always open to requests, so please let me know if this helps you. Thank you.

Hi There, Thank you for your interest. The "complete" version contains all lesson plans to teach an entire stage (i.e. Alphabetic, Within Words, etc.) - early, middle and late features. The "single" versions contain lesson plans for only early, middle or late. Whether you're interested in the "complete" or "single" version, I've included a list of the lessons included in the download with the preview. There is also a sample weekly lesson to ensure that the format is appropriate for your students. Please let me know if you have any further questions. :)

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

As of this year, I have 14 Years of Classroom Experience - 7 years as an Educational Assistant and 7 years as a classroom teacher. As an Educational Assistant, I gained experience working in almost all grades K-12. As a teacher, I started my career in grade 7 and 8 English Language Arts, Mathematics and Social Studies. Three years ago, I made the switch to high school. I am currently teaching English, History and Global Issues.

MY TEACHING STYLE

My teaching style varies depending upon the students, the class and the day and time of the week. I have a preference for experiential, inquiry-based and activity-based teaching, however, direct instruction, also has its place.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I have developed a passion/obsession for adolescent literacy during the past two years. Like me, I'm sure many of you are struggling with the concept of balancing curriculum with a huge range of academic abilities in the classroom. My goal is to create adaptable units and activities that will support the struggling student and challenge the above-level student. Therefore, I've tried to incorporate guided lessons in text structures, reading comprehension strategies, and where possible, explicit reading instruction in most of my lessons.
