I am not sure why, but your links are not working. I was hoping to find a comprehensive list of what is included in this bundle. Thanks.
Also, what year was this syllabus approved?

Thanks for the heads-up. I've gone in and fixed the links, so they should work for you now. The syllabus was created & approved in 2007.

Hello there! I'm not sure exactly how to answer your question because I don't know how long your periods/blocks are with the students. When I teach this unit, there's a lot of pausing the film to discuss a moment with regard to a literary term, so you'll need as much time as the actual film length + about another hour or so, I'd think.

Any chance I could get you to share the passages that you use with this assignment? Do you give all students the same passage? Use a few for the whole class? Or give each student a different passage? Thanks!

HI there! I use various passages, with several for each class. The trick is to pick a passage that will allow students much to discuss (such as almost any interaction between Lady M and M). I limit passages to between 35-40 lines.

I cannot open the noun and adjective zipped file I purchased from this website. It said that there is something missing. I was hoping you figure out what was wrong and send it to me. I use Vista at home and XP at work. Word 2007 at hope and 2003 at school.

Thank you. Pamela Dunlap pamela.dunlap@guhsdaz.org

Hi. I believe that product is in a Zip file; you will need to use WinZip or a similar software to "unzip" the files before they can be opened. There is nothing missing from the file, as other purchasers have not had any problem opening it. If you continue to have problems, please contact Paul at Teachers Pay Teachers; he's very good at helping purchasers get into the files they've purchased. Hope this helps!

I do not have a preview document made (as it is just a one-page document to begin with). However...here is a sample essay prompt:

In describing the manner in which the Nazis stripped Jewish concentration camp prisoners to their most elemental human needs, Elie Wiesel highlights the theme of self-preservation.
• What are “the most elemental human needs” as seen in Night?
• What scenes in Night highlight those needs?
• What luxuries and “extras” were stripped from the prisoners? How?
• What scenes in Night underscore the theme of self-preservation?

For the Million Dollar Baby test key, the multiple choice answers all say A for questions 4-25. Is this correct? Do I have the wrong answer key by accident?

Lisa,

I purchased your lesson to use with 12th grade regular classes and AP Lit classes. I had seen the movie at the theater when it first came out, so I was familiar with it when I stumbled upon your lesson. I watched the first half with colleagues so that we could be pick out the specific elements ourselves. Two of them teach 12th regular and are somewhat conservative. Even though we teach in a non-conservative low-income district with little parent involvement, they were uncomfortable with the language. I and another colleague were not so much. What grade levels did you use this lesson with? Did you show the movie during class time?

HI Sharon. I understand the concern. In my district, we must get parental permission before showing a film. (I'm assuming this question is about the Million Dollar Baby lesson). I have done variations of this lesson with students in grades 10-12, but always with parental permission slips signed first. On the form, I state that the film's rating is due to language and physical violence. I have never had a student or parent complain.

Your AP materials look great. Can I ask what book(s) you use for the Summer Assignment, or is it a general assignment. I'm thinking of ordering the bundle.

Thanks!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

12 years in public school teaching, primarily 10th grade English, 10th grade Honors English, 12th grade AP English, IB English, and Creative Writing courses. I have also taught 9th grade, 9th grade Honors, and 11th grade English courses. In addition to the standard and honors courses, I have taught as an inclusion team teacher and I have taught summer school remediation courses. I have taught in both traditional year-long 7-period (50 minute) schedules as well as 4x4 (88 minute) block scheduling and year-long (88 minute) A/B block scheduling. I am trained by the International Baccalaureate Organization and the College Board. My CW students have taken first place in the VHSL state writing competition on two separate occasions. Our literary magazine has won every major state and national award.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I incorporate a lot of humor in my teaching and I try to make my classroom a place where students feel welcome, valued, and safe. At the same time, my expectations are high and I hold my students to high standards of achievement. My units and lessons are based on best teaching practices and my classroom management is based on relationship-driven teaching. Each student is unique, so I try to be flexible to individual needs without sacrificing the demand for quality work.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I have been nominated for "Teacher of the Year" several times. I feel grateful for the nominations, as my school uses colleague-voting to choose nominees and finalists. I must be doing something OK if my peers believe I'm worthy of a mention. The National Honor Society has conferred "Teacher of the Month" on me, and I have been "Teacher of the Quarter" twice. My favorite honors, however, are the many times students tell me they enjoy my class and parents tell me they want their child in my class. The kids say that they have to work hard, but that they actually have fun too...that means a lot to me.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

B.A. English 1994 [California State University San Marcos], Teacher Certification 1997 [University of Maryland], M.Ed. in Diverse Student Populations 2004 [University of Mary Washington], endorsement in Gifted & Talented, certified by International Baccalaureate Organization and The College Board (AP).

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I am the parent of a 19-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy. I believe that being a parent makes me a more well-rounded teacher, as I am always considering things from all views -- the students', mine, and the parents'.
