I worked so much this past school year with interactive journals and took so many pictures. Things are still being compiled. Although I will be posting some interactive reading journal products, I will also share some interactive journal freebies. I intend to have some things released very soon to give everyone the opportunity to look things over before the school year begins. :)

First, thank you for your interest and for asking about the product. I actually have a free sample mixed practice box for you to get a closer look at all of the cards from this product line. The top header at the top of each card tells the name of the product that each sample card comes from. 'Text Structure Activity Card' is card three on page seven of the document. A colorful easy-fold box is also included on page four of the document for convenient storage of the sample cards and so that you can get a general feel of what the product would look like printed out. Yes, they are. The Common Core Standards are the same across participating states. There are two different companies that have contracts to make the assessments for the different states. I made sure to align the products to the Common Core Publisher Specification documents that both companies use to ensure alignment.

I have actually been working on these grade levels. Each document takes a while to make because each passage is original and is specifically written to match the standards. This one product takes me much longer to make than all of my other products because it has such a detailed process that undergoes before it is complete, and it covers so many standards. I am pretty confident that all or most of the 40 weeks will be complete before school starts up in the fall. But, the next five weeks will be released extremely soon.

The vocabulary in the download sample seems a bit much for 4th grade. I noticed that the vocabulary in the preview you have isn't anywhere near the reading level on your preview images. You go from words like "water," "crumbles," and "gritty" on Thursday to words like "bacteria," "decomposers," and "rhizobia" on Friday. Is something mixed up?

No, actually all of this is on purpose. Common Core is increasing the readability requirements and lexile ranges are about to change. They elude to this in Common Core Standard 10 but their goal is to have students be able to read harder words more comfortably. The passages deal with topics that are commonly taught at each grade level to make it relevant such as plants in this case but relate to the vocabulary they will come across as they learn about the food chain. Yes they do. Each rubric lists the skills a student would possibly do at each level. For example, level 4 would be fully completing the standard with several details. Level 3 would be including a few details to support ideas, etc.

Actually most of the answers are multiple-choice, but there are written response questions too. Weeks 6-10 contain more written response than the first five weeks. This was done strategically because I wanted students to become more familiar with the types of questions that could be posed on the Common Core Reading assessments and understand how to possibly respond to these questions as well. My goal was to do this to provide guidance initially since the standards and how to respond to them is so unfamiliar to many students. As the weeks continue to progress, students will be given an even greater balance of both question types.

1. When you download the file, a folder will appear on the left side of your screen that says "extract all files". Click on it.
2. After it has extracted the file, click the icon of your choice.
If zip is already on your computer, these two steps should make the file open. I hope this is helpful.
In terms of the vocabulary test, that is a great idea that I would definitely like to look into doing.

I appreciate your interest in this product line. I am behind schedule, but have already started working on these. Within the next few days, I will be releasing middle school then the next few weeks of the intermediate grade levels. My goal is to complete all 40 weeks before the school year is complete. By the time students complete all 40 weeks, they will see each Common Core Standard multiple times and will be exposed to many fourth grade topics to give them useful background knowledge. :)

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching for 15 years and have presented at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and Illinois Association of Gifted Children (IAGC)conventions. During this time, I have worked with students from elementary to college level. Currently, I serve as an instructional coach and have experience working with students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
