I'm the author-illustrator of 40+ picture books used in elementary classrooms and by homeschoolers across the USA and internationally. TPT members may be familiar with Measuring Penny, Fraction Action, or Crazy Like a Fox: A Simile Story among many other titles with math, language arts, science and other curriculum content. As I prepare materials suitable for classrooms, I would be happy to hear any advice from the experts (you!)
My picture books introduce topics in an engaging visual way, often with multicultural children or animal characters. For TPT, my goal is to create attractive materials that students enjoy while they're learning something new or reviewing topics they already know. Second grade is a typical level for my books but they vary and are regularly used in lower and higher grades than I'd originally imagined.
My books have been honored by The National Science Teachers Association, the American Library Association, the Florida Book Awards, and the Parent's Choice Awards, among others.
My college degree was in Art, then I signed my first publishing contract in 1984 at the age of 25. Since then I have learned how to illustrate and design my books using digital tools (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign) mostly by reading how-to books and reading/watching online tutorials. I have visited hundreds of elementary schools in my career and from the start have been inspired by what teachers make happen in classrooms every day. It's fun to see the student projects, bulletin boards, posters, anchor charts, and other "stuff". And now with Pinterest I can see classroom stuff anytime, which has been so motivating!
