I bought your Flap books, and I love them. However, the bottom doesn't print close enough to the bottom of the page for them to fold in half and the name be on the front as is shown in the examples. Do you print them a special way so this doesn't happen?
April 23, 2014 Report inappropriate comment
Lori Rosenberg - Teaching With Love and Laughter
Hmmm...This doesn't happen to me. I print them double sided and when I fold them in half, the name is at the top. Can you try another printer?

Hello! I numbered them to help me know which ones my students already finished. I keep a list and it's easier for me to refer to the numbers. It's also easier to match up the word search to its answer key. That way, I can just quickly match the numbers.

I can definitely understand your confusion. I use the Journeys reading program and it has an excellent phonics progression. I also googled it, to see if there were anymore I should include in my phonics products. I did find a few more. My packs include pretty much every pattern for first graders.

I notice you have several contraction games/packets. I am a first grade teacher and would like to know which one you would suggest for my kiddos learning contractions? Thanks
February 23, 2014 Report inappropriate comment
Lori Rosenberg - Teaching With Love and Laughter
Karisa,

Contractions are such a hard concept for first graders. Yet, we are required to teach them. I actually use them all, all year long. My students sort contractions at the pocket chart station. They usually sort just 2 different ones at a time. I use the worksheets at my Word Work Station and the booklets at my Grammar Station. Then, throughout the year, I throw in my theme related contractions activities. I use them all so I have a good balance of hands on activities and activities I can use to check for mastery.

I hope I've answered your question!

Hello! I use the 2014 Common Core version and love it. But, it does need to be supplemented. I created tons of activities for my students to complete each week. If you're looking for a way to get organized with your focus wall, you'll want to look at this:

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Kindergarten-Journeys-HFW-Word-Wall-Cards-805188

And here is where you'll find all the supplemental games and activities:

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Lori-Rosenberg-Teaching-With-Love-And-Laughter/Category/Journeys/Grade-Level/Kindergarten

My advice it to look around and see what you like and what would work best with your students. I also have a teaching blog, where I have a lot of posts about what my students do each day.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I have this on my wish list...have you used it as a center activity with your first graders or do you use it whole group? If you do it as a center, what do you suggest to make it successful and self sufficient so that they can be working on the activities and I can be meeting with small groups?
January 25, 2014 Report inappropriate comment
Lori Rosenberg - Teaching With Love and Laughter
I always use these activities in my work on writing station. I introduced them to the whole class at the beginning of the year and now they can be done independently. As with any new activity, my suggestion is to do one of each together. That should be all it takes to have them complete them during station time. And, what also helps is to pull out the extraordinary ones and have the children share them with the whole class. That way, everyone is motivated to do their best work.

I hope this helps! :)

You're the BEST!!! Thank you for adding those word families :) For word family -ar, I thought maybe bar could be the sixth word? Bar, car, jar, far, star, tar. If you need another idea: scar, par?? Any of those sound good? The -y word family is kind of different, but it's in the Word Family pack Carson Dellosa sells. The picture is of "cry." So other words could be fly, by, dry, shy, sky, my, spy, try, why... I guess using different blends to make a word. If that's too hard, please don't worry about it. You've already done so much for me! :) THANK YOU!!

Hi Lori! I too LOVE this pack and it is working great in my classroom so far! I was wondering if you could make a few more word families that have three letters. The ones we will be doing are -ing, -ell, -old, -all. We are also going to end the year on -y....and I didn't see -ar word family. Are any of those add-able? Thank you SO much!
January 17, 2014 Report inappropriate comment
Lori Rosenberg - Teaching With Love and Laughter
Elisha,

I am so glad you are enjoying this pack! I can definitely add -ing, -ell, -old, - and -all. Can you elaborate more on -y. Do you mean -ay? I can add -ay words. I can't come up with enough -ar words, as I need 6 in all. I can only think of car, far, jar, and tar. I can do star in a pinch, but I'm still short one word.

FYI, if you downloaded it awhile ago, please download it again, as I added some more word families and added some missing letters to the side. Apparently, I was missing some of the letters from the word they started with in each activity.

Lori

UPDATE:
I added everything you wanted except for ar. Enjoy!

I'm not sure I'm understanding your question. But, I'll try to answer it anyway! There are games for the following lessons:

Lessons 1-7, 3-9, 6-11, 8-12, 11-13, and 12-14. For Lessons 16 and on, there is one game per lesson, since there are six words introduced a week. Does that answer your question? If not, let me know how I can be more helpful! Thanks!

I love this product! I use it with my first graders. Right now we are focusing on informational writing. Could you add a poster for that?

Yes, I would be happy to make an informational writing poster. It may take me a while to get it done, though, because my to do list is a mile long and a mile wide. But, I will do it! Just send me an email so I know your email.

Thanks!

I saw a picture on Pinterest of your kids doing a writing activity and they were using a letter/sound chart with pics to help with spelling. I would love to have something like that for my kids. Is that something you made or can you tell me where you found it? Thanks!

That comes from one of my favorite products! You can find it here:

I use them all the time. I have colored ones that are laminated for my small groups and each child has their own black and white version.

Thanks for stopping by!

My students love this activity and are so engaged during center time and I love seeing them so actively engaged! Do you have any other activities similar to this that match either the Journey's spelling lists or sight words for first grade? Thanks so much for all your wonderful and creative work.

Thanks so much! These booklets are all the rage in my classroom too. Lot's of fun activities! I don't have any other booklets for first grade Journeys, but I do have sight word packets for first grade, which cover the first grade dolch words and other words I found important. You can find them here:

None of my other first grade Journeys spelling activities are books. They are more like activities. You can find them here:

Let me know if you have any other questions. :)

Buyer re: Daily 5 Goodies
I love this! I am hoping to use it my classroom, but am having trouble visualizing how I would set up the display of the rotations for the students to see. Do you have any pictures on how you organize just the rotation schedule part? i.e. do you use a pocket chart, display all of the students names, etc? Thanks!

Hello! I use my own version of D5. I had to add a few more stations in. I have a blog post about it, with visuals, here:

and here:

I hope my post answers your questions!

I love this activity and have used it for each of our phonics patterns so far the year. I see that "ar" is added but would you consider adding r controlled i "ir/er/ur" and "ai/ay" and "oa/ow" and maybe "oo" :)

Have you included the beginning letter on each card. I am looking for something that the students have to choose the beginning letter using magnetic letters etc.

Lori Rosenberg - Teaching With Love and Laughter
Yes! The whole word is on each card. The beginning letter is transparent and the rest of the letters are dark.

Buyer re: Building Sight Word Fluency {First Grade Journeys Edition}
Hi- Lori, do the words overlap between the first grade and kinder pack? If they don't would you consider bundling them?
Thanks
November 18, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Lori Rosenberg - Teaching With Love and Laughter
Hello! The words do not overlap. Do you teach both grades, like me? I probably won't bundle them because not many teachers would need both grades. There is a TON of work that goes into bundling products! More than you can possibly imagine! Thanks for understanding.
