I homeschool my children with a friend's child. Her daughter is struggling (end of first grade) with doing even the simplest addition or subtraction problems in her head. If you ask her what 5 + 5 is she will count it up on her fingers. This little freebie is just what she needs! I am so excited to show this to my friend! Thank you!

You're welcome! For some reason, the kids catch on to this very quickly. Once they do, they become very good at decomposing all kinds of crazy numbers. I was a math struggler as a child, and I wish someone had taught me using this method. Thanks for the quality feedback! :)

I am not sure if I am misreading something, but I think on page 17 there is an error with the last question on the left side. It says 8 + 5 + 6, which doesn't have a make ten set of friends. Just thought I would inquire about it. This is a fabulous product though! Thanks so much for making it!!

Haha, thanks! I actually used the shapes tools in power point (or it may have been in Word - they're the same). It was all I had at the time. After creating the circles, I used the line tools in that same menu to make the legs etc. I then "grouped" all the shapes so they all hooked together. I've since started using photoshop for all of my drawings-sooo much easier (and they look a little fancier!). :)

Can you please fix the cut and paste pages and email me the updated versions? I went to use them as independent work and realized that the wheels don't correspond with the pages they are supposed to. Even if I were to swap the circles out to glue onto the other page (ex: use page 1 and circles 2), it still wouldn't work. HELP! I loved everything about this activity, but was disappointed with that. Thanks!

Thanks Marjorie for answering my question about how many riddles to be used at one time with your Scavenger Hunt coin game. I teach 2nd grade and I think I will try to use it as a whole class activity. Like everything else we teachers do, it is trial and error with each activity and each class. Again, thanks for the great idea! I can't wait to use it.

Hi Diane, sorry for the delay answering-I'm on vacation and only have my iPad & limited Internet access. I typically use this as a center activity so there are only 6-7 kids using it at one time. I didn't want all going to the same clue at the same time so I made it such that they can go to any clue in any order as long as they write the word in the correct spot on the paper. I run my centers for 20 min. (first grade) and they take a while to write so I may use 2 at a time depending on the level. I may try doing it with teams this year, bur my firsties aren't even ready til mid year. Hope this answers your question...let know! :)

I saw your posting on the Sellers Forum page of Teachers Pay Teachers; so, I thought I would look at your freebie. I have a few suggestions that might help you to better market your products. First, create a cover page which can then be used as an attractive thumbnail to entice buyers. Add a second page which is a directions or suggestions page. List several ways you use this product in your classroom. Never assume that a buyer knows how, why, or when to use your product. Use the footer to put the copyright symbol, your name and date of creation on EVERY page. Items, especially free ones, have been "stolen" from TPT and posted on other sites to be sold. You have to protect all of your creations.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching for thirteen years - nine in grade 2, and four in grade 1. Prior to that I worked in telecommunications.
MY TEACHING STYLE
I am a visual learner, so I tend to teach that way. I frequently draw to illustrate whatever concept I'm trying to present. I believe movement is important (especially with the little ones). I try to get them up and moving as much as possible. Keeping first graders engaged and learning every minute of the school day is hard work! It takes a lot of prep, energy, and patience. I try to utilize a lot of competitions, challenges, and fun game-like activities. I try to limit worksheets unless there's an accompanying activity.
HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT
Well, I've received several awards for my artwork, and got to have lunch with the governor at the statehouse once for a paper I wrote...does that count? haha
MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY
My undergrad degree is in fine arts (illustration/graphic design), and I hold a Master's in Ed./Reading. Creativity is a tremendous asset when it comes to teaching, and my artsy background has served me well!
ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
I am married to a fantastic guy and have two amazing children - both in college. My oldest is an engineering major and his sister is an international business major. I also have a little white schnoodle named Samantha. She's a love.
