That is a good question. This is a 50-year old movie that was quite revolutionary in its days and can still be shocking in some ways. There are certainly a lot of adult themes in the movie, but most of it is sub-surface level that kids don't pick up on. I am lucky to work in a liberal, open teaching environment where it is no problem to show Spartacus, but if I were you I would preview the film completely before showing it and judge based your own school situation. If it were eight grade or higher I would say no worries, but sixth grade needs a preview. Hope that helps!

Common Core Reading Standards Collection: 68 Student Pages is very good for sixth grade if you want a mix of CC skills over a range of abilities from Grade 4-6. It has three lengthier informational text passages in it. If you want only informational text passages for a more homogenous group then I recommend Common Core Informational Text Collection: Grade 5-6 and the free projects download that comes with it. Please look at the previews for both...personally I think are equally great for Grade 6. Thanks for asking!

Thanks for your comments. There are over 30 idioms in English related to drinking and drunkenness, and this is one of the milder of them and also has a very interesting historical origin. I teach middle school and in a fairly open school environment, and in my situation pretending that drinking does not exist, keeping it as a taboo subject, and not engaging the students of that age with the realities of alcohol isn't a desirable or healthy option in the long run. To each his own I guess!

I just mentioned your Human Body idioms in my blog post about Human Body systems. I love these and used your packet for weather. For weather, I made a chart in word, typed up each idiom and the answer, printed on cardstock, and then cut the cards apart. In the lesson, students had to move around the room trying to find their partner. I would love to see you add this modification to your packets (I'm sure it would take forever, but I plan to use lots of your language units next year during my word study block). Thanks!

The actual answers: In the second case the pigs go back to the original owner. If someone drops their wallet on the street, even if they are careless, it does not belong to the person who found it. "Finders keepers, losers weepers" is not a legal principle. Same with the pigs in this case. In the third case the contractors have to rebuild the house, ancient and modern law tend to favor the buyer and not the seller (the two homebuilders) and so the house has to be built for the original agreed-upon price.

Well, first of all I think the range of what you are expected to “cover” in a single year excludes going into great depth in any one of them, which is unfortunate. You are probably going to be given a textbook to teach these topics, with a chapter on each topic, and have a few weeks for each. Most of my products focus more on creative and extension types of activities than real in-depth historical facts. Fun activities are what sixth graders want and learn best from, which makes the cramming of multiple civilizations and topics in one year as you describe less than memorable for them. I have an entire year to teach only Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. I would recommend that you teach what you are supposed to to meet the curriculum and when you want to do something creative and have the time, such as writing student names in the Greek alphabet or having a Roman dinner party, then you pop over to my store as needed and see what I have in individual products. Hmmm, I thought it was in there but I will check again. In the Pigs and Wolves case the pigs go back to the original owners since "finders keepers, losers weepers" is not a valid rule of law. If you find a wallet on the street it isn't yours even if the owner carelessly dropped it. Same with the pigs that were recovered. In the Earthquake case the law supports the buyer and not the seller and so they have to rebuild the house for the agreed upon original price. Risk falls on the person receiving the money/delivering the contracted goods. Hope that helps.

I was checking many products out and I thought I saved the correct one in my cart at the time, so I deleted the demo. After I purchased it yesterday, I noticed that it only had one article on Alfred Nobel. I was looking for the one with multiple articles: I remember something about the Arctic Husky, Tree Rings and Abraham Lincoln, etc. I tried to looked back at your products again, but they all have similar titles and now I am uncertain exactly what I saw. I've been a teacher for 30 years, and I still am not sure about educational "jargon" as it is used in different schools and states. "Closure" has so many different interpretations possible that I cannot answer your question. I would suggest you speak to your administration and ask them for their understanding of "closure." My gut reaction is "no" this is not closure.

I just purchased the Roman Emperor project package. The description says the package includes a list of emperors to use as well as a list of emperors NOT to use. I can't find the list of "bad" emperors anywhere in the text. It could be me and my failing eyesight after a couple of hours of research, but did that part get edited out? It was a selling point for me, so you might want to edit it from the description if it's no longer a part of the product.

I think if an emperor is not listed as one of the "good" or "appropriate" emperors for students to study, and I know there is such a list, you can assume he was one of the "baddies" and should be avoided. Nevertheless, I will adjust the description if there isn't a list of names for the bad ones. Other than that, I hope you are happy with the product.

Thanks for your purchase! I have used these informational texts in a variety of ways. They can be a tool for whole group instruction, but you need a very homogenous group for that to work well. I have used different printables for different ability levels using the Flesch Reading scale as a guide and knowing what each student is capable of. They have also been used in reading groups, with each group of three-four choral reading the same printable and then working through the answers together in centers. I happen to think they are pretty versatile, and I hope you have success with whatever form you choose

"ARCH" and its components were the original creation of a special K-12 committee at my school. There are no external resources that I know for it and I don't know if or where it exists elsewhere. TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I have been an upper elementary and middle school teacher for 31 wonderful years and have loved every minute of it. For me, content is the key. I believe the plans, printables, and worksheets I have created have above all else high-quality content, but are also practical and ready-to-use. Each item I sell has been used in my classroom or by a part of my teaching team (teacher-tested) and is clearly written. I won't put any lesson or idea on TeachersPayTeachers unless I am certain YOU can understand it, teach with it today, and that it has value for children.
MY TEACHING STYLE
I model my lessons on the idea that, more than ever in today's world, the focus and direction has to change in the class on a regular basis. Kids need to work hard, but it has to be work they enjoy doing AND that teaches them what they need to be successful. The world is changing and ways of learning are too, and we as teachers have to change with it.
HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT
The greatest honor any teacher can have is when an adult comes to them and says: "You were my teacher when I was a child and you changed my life for the better." After 31 years in the same district that is happening more each year and I love it!
