kidslearntoread re: Common Core: Counting Boards, Counting to and from 120
I am a virtual school Kindergarten Public school teacher.
I call the students monthly and grade their work via drop box and in a secure
webmail system that does not go out to the internet. I would like to know if I purchased your products, would I be able to webmail the students their copy of
work from your work books? It is a secure site and only the kids in my class would bet the sheets? I look forward to hearing from you.

Wow, that's very interesting! I don't really see my products working well in a system like that. My products are workstation games and/or activities that are meant to be copied and used with the students. If you emailed the files, then basically their parents would need to copy them and work together with the kiddos on the activities. That clearly falls outside the scope of the copyright guidelines for my products. Thank you for contacting me and asking about your unique situation!

Hello! I love your products!!! I am going to be teaching a two week math course for first graders going into second grade. What would your recommend with having only two weeks? These will not be remedial or gifted students, just students who love math! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I would subitize daily and focus on as many composing/decomposing activities as possible! Those skills (subitizing and composing/decomposing) are so critical to developing strong number sense, and they set the stage for computational fluency.

It's just a standard 8.5 x 11 page. You can stretch it to fit any paper you can print on, though. We have a Print Shop available to us in my district, and I tell them to print it poster size. It just stretches to fill the space.

Sorry you're having problems! This is from the TpT Help section and might help:

Newly created PDF files need to be opened with the latest Adobe Reader software. You can get that for free here:
http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/

For Mac Users:
The default PDF application on a Mac is called Preview. This program is not compatible with newer PDF files. You must take these steps to open your PDF with Adobe Reader:

1. Highlight the PDF product icon with one click.

2. Go to "File" at the top of the screen.

3. Choose "Open with."

4. Select "Adobe Reader."

5. You may be prompted to make Adobe the default program when opening PDFs. This is a good idea so you won't have to repeat the steps above!

I read your message about frames with backgrounds. I looked through my collection which I have been developing and just put a set of classic frames with backgrounds in my store. I love making frames with backgrounds and you will find mine to be different. I'll put more frames in my store soon. You also might like my premade task cards which I just put in my store too.

Why do you put a number bond to 5 and one to 7 on the same page or are you just showing examples? I am wondering if your product shows number bonds in sequence or do you just show them randomly and with different totals on one page?

I like your products very much but am not quite clear on your teaching of the strategies that you offer. On the cards with number bonds I see that you show two ways to get to 4 so do you do that for other combinations as well, like other ways to get to 4? Also do you show other ways to get to 5 for example. I am just trying to get clear because at the bottom of your page I see one page examples as well. What I am wondering is do you show all the ways to get to a number.

Excited to hear that you're interested in my products! I don't put my store on sale very often outside of the big, site-wide TpT sales. When I run sales like the one going on right now, it's usually kind of a spur of the moment thing to highlight a certain group of products. And I never put any of the products priced $2 and under on sale. I'm not sure when the next TpT sale will be. There's usually one for Teacher Appreciation (April or May?), but we never know very far in advance. I hope that helps!

Hi,
I received a packet as part of a district handout in a staff development session that was given in March. The packet contained a product of yours called "Using Ten Frames To Build Understanding of Number Relationships."
As a fellow seller on TPT and on the web, I wanted to make sure that you gave permission to duplicate this and distribute it to all of the Kindergarten teachers in our district, which is Bonita Unified in La Verne and San Dimas, CA. I have been the victim of copyright infringement myself, and I was surprised to see that this was distributed. I would have asked this question of the people that passed it out myself, except that I wasn't there that day.
Thank you,

jlpigott re: Common Core: Fishy Business, Composing and Decomposing Numbers to 10
I purchased CC Fishy Business and want to send it to our production center to color copy and laminate. I went to make additional copies of the Go Fish game cards
(since you need 4-5 copies for the game)and the actual 10 frame does not show up when I copy it. Is there a way to make the ten frame darker so when it is copied the students will see the 10 frame? Also, there are numbers on the 6, 9 and 10 card and not on any of the others. I would prefer it without any numbers. Is it possible this is an error? I am also wondering if the ten frames will show up on the spinners when they are copied, would it be possible to darken them as well?
Thank you for your great work and terrific blog.

Thanks for contacting me about the problems with the cards! All the ten-frame cards were supposed to have numbers on them, and I've corrected that issue now. Unfortunately, the ten-frames that are not showing up for you are graphics in my file, so I can't darken them. Maybe you can work with you production center to darken the copies when they run them. So sorry I can't help more with it!

Yes, that helps. I guess I shouldn't have used the word "game"; I knew it was a teaching tool, and ways to show 5; I was just unsure as to what the squares were for on the printable (I hadn't seen squares AND the circles together like that) I do something very similar using all circles, and they have to use 2 different colors to show the ways to make a particular number. It's not so much a game as a tool students could work with either in a small group with you or with a partner. A good way to use it would be with a 5-frame. A student takes a card, such as "3 and what makes 5?" On the 5-frame, the student would place counters on three spaces. Then, using a different color, they fill in the 2 spaces to make 5. They can record their work ("3 and 2 make 5") in a math journal or using the printable. Hope that helps!

You might want to check your instructions---you wrote true of false and I think you meant true or false. Also in your spinners, it shows the number 6 upside down and I think it should be the other way so as to not confuse young learners. Otherwise I like your work very much and hope these suggestions make sense!

Hi there: I downloaded your Exploring Doubles package but have a question about the game "Seeing Doubles" I think I am likely not understanding something but you said in the directions to use only one marker (between two students?) and that they use one dice but if Player 1 dices and gets six and counts from START he ends up on Player 1 and this doesn't make sense so I feel I am missing something. If he gets 6 does he go to 6 plus 6 and how can they share a game marker? I appreciate you answering my question. Mary Anne

Sorry for the confusion, Mary Anne! They use the same marker because they are going in different directions. So if I'm Player 1 and roll a 3, I move 3 spaces to the left. Player 2 rolls, say he gets a 4, and he moves the same piece 4 spaces to the right. It's kind of like tug-of-war. But you're right, if a player rolls a 6 on the first roll, they would end up on their home space and win. One suggestion would be to put small white sticky dots on the 4, 5, and 6 of the dice and write in 1, 2, and 3. That way, 1, 2, and 3 would be the only numbers they could roll.

Hey Stephanie! Sorry for the problems. Are you maybe using a Mac? This is from the TpT Help section:

The PDF I downloaded is showing black smudges, what do I do?
You just need to update your Adobe Reader:
http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/

If you are on a Mac, do not open with Preview. It will not work. Download the most updated version of Adobe Reader and open the PDF with it (and not Preview). To 'open with' adobe reader on a mac, highlight the product pdf icon with one click, go to 'file' at the top of the screen, choose 'open with' then select 'adobe' and you'll be all set.

Hi,
In your 'Common Core: Kindergarten Numbers from 11-19' you have a page with numbers 11-20 (number word, number and ten frames). Would you also have this for numbers 21-30?

I need it asap.

Thanks for the help.

No, I'm sorry I don't. The focus of the unit was numbers from 11-19, so I only made it for those numbers.

Hi Donna,
The packet looks awesome! I was going through it and noticed on page 25 there is a slight mistake with the 60-40 rods picture... The red circle is around 2 rods, not the 4 rods as the equation states. Just a "heads up". Sorry to post here, but didn't remember how to get in touch with you in another fashion. :) Can't wait to use it in my room! Thanks for all your hard work! Catherine

Thanks!

Hi Donna,

Please take a look at the last card "Show What You Know-Fraction Twins." It shows 2/3 and 4/6 as being closer to 1. Shouldn't they be closer to 1/2?

Thanks,

Just wanted to send you a note. This is a great file but one of my kids found an error. One of the cards, on page 11, reads 59 and the picture shows 59 but the expanded notation reads 9 tens and ____ ones. Thanks for all the fantastic materials. B. Bowman

Hey Sherri! We use neither, actually. Our curriculum is based on the TEKS. As we transition to the newly adopted TEKS, there are more and more connections to Common Core.

Hi Donna,
I purchased your fractions unit with the number line and I'm really excited to start using it with my 2nd graders. I do have a question about a fraction like 2/8. On the number line there are 4 sections between the 0 and 1/2. Two are shaded. Would that be closer to 0 or closer to 1/2? I think the kids might be confused because it is equally close to the 0 and the 1/2. I just want to teach it the correct way the 1st time. :-)) I just love your math blog by the way and have shared it very enthusiastically with my whole team!

Hey Debbie! Glad you like the fraction unit and my blog. I think 2/8 opens up a very good conversation--like you said, it's the same distance from 0 as it is from 1/2. It's right in the middle! For me, I would use that for a problem solving extension. After they do several that are clearly closer to 0, 1/2, and 1, I would then show them 2/8. "Hum. What about this one?" I think it would be awesome to hear their conversations.

Hi,
I have previewed and downloaded your place value "Who Has" game and the Money cards with ten frames. As a district coordinator I would like to use these in my (password protected) curriculum with a note telling the teachers where they can find more activities like those. Would that be alright?

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

My 16 years of classroom experience in grades 2-5 prepared me for my current role as a K-5 Math Instructional Coach.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Having taught grades 3-5 for most of my career, primary (K-2) math is now a passion. I look for ways to prevent the gaps I saw in my 3-5 students. I try to create activities and resources that are engaging, but contain sound math. Multiple representations and activities that follow the CRA (concrete-->representational-->abstract) sequence of instruction are my specialty. I also try to make products that are easy for teachers to put together and implement in their classrooms.
