Debbie Krueger  (TpT Seller) re: Common Core: Monkey Business Adding 10s and Place Value Workstation Activities
On page 22 there's a grid titled "Adding Tens" with random numbers on it and I'm just wondering what the activity is for it. I don't see any instructions.
December 2, 2013
Math Coach's Corner  (TpT Seller)
Sorry for the confusion! It goes with the activity card on page 8.

Nura re: Common Core: Missing Part Flashcards, Combinations for numbers 1-10
Hi,
Do you have this for sums greater than 10? If you did I wanted to purchase to align for first grade. Thanks. :-)
December 2, 2013
Math Coach's Corner  (TpT Seller)
No, only for sums to 10. Sorry!

Christina's Cafe of Creations  (TpT Seller) re: Speed Math
I love this activity, and I love your products! You know lots about teaching math, so I'd like to ask your opinion on something that is concerning me. Do you think it is ok to do this activity with third graders who more than likely have not learned order of operations yet? I think it really gets them thinking about manipulating numbers and making them work in many situations, I just wonder if down the road they may say, "But she let me do this in third grade..." when a situation may have worked for the activity, but does not follow the order of operations...
December 2, 2013
Math Coach's Corner  (TpT Seller)
Yes, I think it's okay. I think it builds their number sense and improves their ability to work flexibly with numbers. That will help them make the transition to more formal order of operations.

Can this unit apply to the TEKS?
November 16, 2013
Math Coach's Corner  (TpT Seller)
Absolutely!! I actually created it for my 5th grade teachers, and we're in Texas. I just correlate to CC because it is so much more widely used. There are a lot of commonalities between the TEKS and CC, especially the new TEKS!

teachtwo2 re: Common Core: Capture 4 2nd Grade Math Strategy Games
I purchased and downloaded this, but the gameboards didn't have the numbers on it, just weird random squares. Have I done something wrong? The rest of it is fine.

This is from the TpT Help section. It helps with most PDF printing problems:

Why is my PDF blurry? There are black lines where the images should be.

For Mac Users:
The default PDF application on a Mac is called Preview. This program is not compatible with newer PDF files. You must take these steps to open your PDF with Adobe Reader:

1. Highlight the PDF product icon with one click.

2. Go to "File" at the top of the screen.

3. Choose "Open with."

5. You may be prompted to make Adobe the default program when opening PDFs. This is a good idea so you won't have to repeat the steps above!

It may just be me but I also asked my Math teaching partner and we were not sure how the scoring was to be calculated. I really liked the concept because it reinforces material that I have already taught this year. Would you please let me know excatly how the scoring works? Thanks for your help.

Hi there,
I am a former math coach in Canada, having recently returned to the classroom. I've just discovered your blog! I am enjoying many of your games and resources already. My question is, do you ever use place value dice? In our District they are used in most classrooms, and I've noticed you don't feature them..is it because they are not widely used in the US?
October 20, 2013
Math Coach's Corner  (TpT Seller)
Place value dice are a great tool, we just don't happen to have them on our campus. When I'm making games and activities, I try to use common materials that I think most teachers have or can easily get. That's why I often use playing cards and standard dice. I make lots of spinners if I need more specific numbers.

Hey! I purchased two of your products today and am a little confused by one of them. I love the Number Bond Flashcards! I am little confused by the Dot Cards for Addition and Subtraction. I am trying to understand why you have dots in random places on the ten frame for adding things like 4 plus 1. I am going from memory because my things are at school. Can you help me to understand?

Regina Greene
October 9, 2013
Math Coach's Corner  (TpT Seller)
Sorry there is confusion, Regina! I wish you had the cards with you and could be more specific. On all the Plus 1 cards, one of the dots is not filled and all the others are filled. I'm looking at them, and I don't see any random patterns. The students are meant to subitize the filled dots and then add the one extra unfilled dot. Please email me at mathcoachcorner@gmail.com if they still don't make sense after looking at them more closely!

I joined TPT in August, and I am writing to see if you might be willing to join my new middle school board called "Great Ideas for Middle School" and post your products on it. You can post as many as you like.

I would greatly appreciate your support.

Thank you very much for your consideration!

jashimala re: Multiples Mambo: A Fast-Paced Game for Practicing Multiples
This may seem like a silly questions. I just bought the Multiples Mambo. In your directions, you show the example of starting out with the 6 card. You state that the player should place the next multiple (8) or the previous multiple (4) on top of the 6. Are they just doing multiples of 2 because neither one of those is a multiple of 6. Do students just play with one set at a time or the complete set 2 through 12 all at once? Thanks.
September 29, 2013
Math Coach's Corner  (TpT Seller)
Not silly at all! Yes, the game is designed to practice one set of multiples at a time. So if you're playing with the 2s deck, you're practicing multiples of 2.

I accidently bought the primary poster set, but meant to buy the intermediate ones (I think intermediate would be more appropriate for 4th graders, correct???) for myself and two others. Is there any way I can swtich them before I download them? I appologize for my mistake! Thanks!

J Meier re: Add It Up! Dot Cards for Addition and Subtraction Facts
Hi There! I purchased your Dot Cards for Addition and Subtraction, but after I download it and try to print, I get a message that tells me "Unable to print". This is the only product that this has happened to me. Do you have any ideas?
September 16, 2013
Math Coach's Corner  (TpT Seller)
I have not heard this specific problem before. First, I'd check the information below about Adobe. If that doesn't clear it up, you might try downloading it again. Maybe something happened during the download. Also, it's a pretty big file with lots of graphics--it might be exceeding your printer's memory. Maybe try just printing a couple pages and see if that works.

This is from the TpT Help section, and most of the time it clears up the printing problems.

Pam Willever re: Speed Math
Love you stuff, just wondering you live in Texas are you using common core in your district?
September 8, 2013
Math Coach's Corner  (TpT Seller)
Hey, Pam! My district does use the TEKS for their scope and sequence. If you compare Common Core to the new math TEKS (being implemented in 2014), the standards are very similar. Good math is good math, regardless of what label you put on it! Hope that helps. :)

srebel re: Add It Up! Dot Cards for Addition and Subtraction Facts
Love your items and your blog. Can't figure out how to leave you a message on your blog (disabled on our district computers). I have a couple of fifth graders that are struggling with basic addition facts. I've used some of your ten frames that were freebies. Do you have some items that you would recommend for use with older students to help build that number sense? Thanks so much.
September 2, 2013
Math Coach's Corner  (TpT Seller)
I was going to recommend the Add It Up! cards, but it looks like maybe you already got it? You're definitely going the right route with the ten-frames. I would really concentrate on combinations for 10 (1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 + 7, etc.), because that will help them with facts such as 9 + 5--understanding that they can use one from the 5 to make a 10 from the 9, so it's the same as 10 + 4. A great book for teaching facts using a strategy based approach is Mastering the Basic Facts in Addition and Subtraction (http://astore.amazon.com/matcoascor-20/detail/0325029636). If I can help in any other way, email me at mathcoachcorner@gmail.com. :)

I was wondering if you have made any poster size of the number word, number and ten frame with those cute monsters? If so please let me know as I would like to purchase those to hang in my monster themed room. Anna

Glad you like the monster unit! I haven't made large pictures like you're wanting, but that's a great idea. Email me at mathcoachcorner@gmail.com and tell me how high you'd like the numbers to go.

elizabethspriggs re: Common Core: Kindergarten Numbers from 11-19
Hello,
I noticed you have a package that includes a poster showing the numbers from 11-20 with words, numerals, and ten-frame representation. I was wondering if you had a similar poster showing numbers from 0-10 in the same way. If so would you be willing to sell just the posters?

I teach third grade. Should I get third grade. Should I get intermediate, or primary?

Oh, geez, that's a hard call. I think I'd probably say get the primary set. I think the kiddos will connect with the examples on the posters more.

Hey Regina! Sorry for the trouble. I don't have a clue what might cause that, if it's not the Adobe thing. And you're not on a Mac opening it in Preview mode, right? Anyway, if you'll email me at mathcoachcorner@gmail.com, we'll get it straightened out! :)

You responded to my comment/concern with a copy of the download info from TpT, but that is not my problem. The text is not blurry. It is not an Adobe problem.
It seems there may be text boxes left in place that I cannot locate or remove.

I've heard that problem takes on many forms besides just blurry text. I haven't had any other concerns voiced over that product, but I'd love to see what's going on for you. Can you take a screen shot and email it to me at mathcoachcorner@gmail.com?

fmahalo re: Common Core: Number Bond Flashcards (Part-Part-Whole)
Hi,
I was wondering if you would be able to create a number bond per page for those numbers requiring more counters (from numbers 5 to 10 or from numbers 6 to 10). This would help accommodate a variety of counter sizes. I like to use larger counters especially with those little kinders needing fine motor training. I printed a few on poster size and even increased scale to 150%, but the number bonds came out off-centered. Any help or advise is welcome.

I see your point, but I have to tell you that that would be very labor intensive, and it would take an incredible amount of paper. One thing you might do is have them 'act out' the flashcard on a larger part/part/whole mat. If that doesn't make sense, email me at mathcoachcorner@gmail.com.

I see many of your products are for K-2. What do you have for third grade related to Common Core Standards for place value and multiplication and division?

You're correct that many of my products are K-2, but there are a few multiplication products. You can search in each store based on grade level. Here's the link to my 3-5 products: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Math-Coachs-Corner/Grade-Level/3-5

Do you have any recommendations to help 4th graders who don't know basic subtraction facts? They do ok when given time, but don't recall the facts very quickly. Addition is fast enough - maybe they need to link the two concepts?

You are exactly right, Jan! The best approach is to connect subtraction to addition. You might want to check out this blog post: http://mathcoachscorner.blogspot.com/2012/11/connecting-subtraction-to-addition.html

Hi Donna,
I noticed on your blog the picture of the missing part flashcard set with the ten frame. Did you just use the ten frame for combinations to 10 or is there a separate set included with the ten frames for all numbers?
Thanks,
Katania

Yes, I just used the ten frames for the combinations to ten, Katania.

rkiedinger re: Common Core: Number Cards to 120, A Pirate's Life w/Activities
Coach could you reconsider your 100 chart layout? Perhaps make two 100 charts. One with the tens to the right and a newer vertical CCS chart with the tens in columns. Children make greater sense of the chart if it looks and "feels" like the blocks. Follow what I am thinking?

These are great! I am wondering if anyone else is having difficulty printing? The chalkboard area on each of the posters is not printing cleanly for me.

thanks!

Sorry you're experiencing problems! This is from the TpT Help section and might help:

For Mac Users:
The default PDF application on a Mac is called Preview. This program is not compatible with newer PDF files. You must take these steps to open your PDF with Adobe Reader:

1. Highlight the PDF product icon with one click.

2. Go to "File" at the top of the screen.

3. Choose "Open with."

5. You may be prompted to make Adobe the default program when opening PDFs. This is a good idea so you won't have to repeat the steps above!

I love your blog and your products! If I download this to my home computer, can I save it to a flash drive so I can print at school or other location? Just checking before I purchase

Thanks for taking the time to ask! You can absolutely save it to a flash drive to transport the file to school. As long as you are only using the product in your classroom and not sharing it with others, you are abiding by the copyright.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

My 16 years of classroom experience in grades 2-5 prepared me for my current role as a K-5 Math Instructional Coach.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Having taught grades 3-5 for most of my career, primary (K-2) math is now a passion. I look for ways to prevent the gaps I saw in my 3-5 students. I try to create activities and resources that are engaging, but contain sound math. Multiple representations and activities that follow the CRA (concrete-->representational-->abstract) sequence of instruction are my specialty. I also try to make products that are easy for teachers to put together and implement in their classrooms.
