hjohnso2 re: Geometry Web Scavenger Hunt
What geometry concepts are covered in this activity?

Some questions relate to searching for formulas, others relate to trivia-type questions that would involve a detailed internet search. I'd use this activity less to present concepts and more as a novelty - hope that helps!

I don't usually have any problems with PDF files. I have purchased many times from your and never had an issue before. When trying to download the file, it only loads about 50% of it before it stops and says there is an error. I will try again when I get home from school today and I will try from my work computer during planning.

I just downloaded the file from TpT - it's a PDF file. Are you able to download PDFs generally? Could it be the computer you're using? What is specifically happening when you attempt to download the file? Thanks for your patience - this is not an issue I have encountered.

gandyt re: "Before & After" Warm-Ups: Promote Reflection About Common Errors
Do you create the "standardized" problems? Are the students to copy the entire problem on the left-side of the template or just work the problem?
March 11, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
MathyCathy
MathyCathy  (TpT Seller)
Thanks for your question! Whether students copy the problem on the left side depends on the problem itself in my opinion - if you're presenting a lengthy word problem, perhaps, say, an equation and the work would be written on the left, but not the entire problem statement. As a general rule, I have used problems that are not too lengthy, and students have copied and solved the problem on the left side. Hope that helps!

Hello!

I just purchased the activity that allows students to discover the "rules" for multiplying integers on their own versus direct instruction. I am using this lesson as part of an interview I am going through and love the idea! However, I've never taught middle school math and was wondering if you could offer guidance on the activity as well as clarification on the "good guys/bad guys" coming to town and leaving town. Thanks!

Hi there! My suggestion is to complete the activity as if you are the student - fill in the multiplication chart, and look for patterns (repeated subtraction specifically). Finally, think of "good guys" as positive, "bad guys" as negative, "coming to town" as a "good" or "positive" thing, and "leaving town" as a "bad" or "negative" thing. Hope that helps! ;-)

Awesome--thanks so much. We attended a meeting yesterday and finally seeing district level focus moving to common core. Fractions are a biggie for us so looking for ways to beef up our math curriculum.
Have a wonderful weekend :)

Thanks for stopping by! Though a PowerPoint will open on a Mac in Keynote, sometimes the spacing of things changes a bit. I'll convert the presentation to a Keynote and list it in a separate listing for you. I assume you are asking because your Mac does not have Powerpoint?

I already purchased this and made 180 copies of pages 2-3. I love the activity! However, after I made the copies I realized that the numerators are filled with exclamation points and all the information in the bottom right box is garbled. It looks fine when I view it on the computer, so I'm not sure why it printed like this. Help!

That is bizarre! Especially with a PDF file! Did you print it at school? If so, is there someone in your tech department that has an idea? Have never seen that, especially if it is showing up correctly on your screen. Maybe a printer driver? No idea - weird!

Hello! Actually, if you have a Mac, I know it's possible to type on a PDF using Preview. This is also true if you have an iPad and an annotating app. Please let me know if this helps! Thanks!

Hi there!

I have been using DocAS and neu.annotate+. DocAS is a little better in my opinion, since there is a built-in file organization system, right there in the app!

Check out more info about the apps I am using and my classroom happenings here, where I am documenting my experiences this year as we've jumped right in to using 1-to-1 iPads:

Hi!

Are you opening the file using Keynote, which is Mac's equivalent to PowerPoint? If you do not have the Keynote application on a Mac, you will probably not be able to access the file. If you are trying to open it in Keynote, perhaps you can tell me what is happening when you try to open it and I can give you some guidance. When I download it from my TPT account and open the downloaded file, it opens right up in Keynote.

Perhaps it is because it is a Keynote presentation? Keynote is Mac's version of PowerPoint. Though I am pretty sure a PowerPoint presentation will open in Keynote, I am not sure a Keynote opens in PowerPoint.

Yes, you're correct, there is no key included. If you need one, I can certainly send one along. Also, since part of the quiz is for students to generate their own examples demonstrating the properties, a key can't be made for the open-ended portion of each quiz. Thanks for your interest! :-)

Good Morning!

Each of the two teams keeps score, which is a running total (adding integers). Depending on whether the goal is to get the highest or lowest score, the strategy of the game changes. The best part is when each team realizes that their choices of moves helps to determine choices for the opposing team. Give it a try and let me know how it goes - the rules are written in more detail on page 2 of the download. Thanks for your interest! :-)

Yes, as indicated in the listing, this is a one-page activity. When I used it, I gave each group the same problem so that we could compare their approaches. Some groups "fell for" the bogus steps, and some did not. When all groups had the same problem to try, it made for a nice follow-up discussion as a whole class. Thanks for your interest!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Thanks for stopping by! I have thirteen years of teaching experience including teaching mathematics to middle school and high school students, as well as, in more recent years, serving as a "Math Coach/Specialist", working with hundreds of students and their teachers in one of Pennsylvania's largest districts. I have recently transitioned to Austin, Texas, where I am teaching 8th grade Pre-Algebra and Algebra I. Check out my blog for up-to-date classroom happenings! mathycathy.com/blog

MY TEACHING STYLE

My high-energy teaching style and desire to keep all students engaged ensures variety in instructional techniques and resources. The resources I create evolve from my students' specific needs and my desire to keep them engaged and excited about mathematics! I hope you see this through the variety of resources I have posted here at TPT!

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I recently earned my Master of Science in Education with a 4.0 average. I have been trained in the Success For All Foundation's "Power Teaching"! Does my "Best Female Vocalist" award count? I earned that in the talent show our middle school hosted last year. I have the hand-carved wooden award to prove it! (Thanks to an amazing Industrial Arts teacher!)

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I received my Bachelor of Science in Education at Clarion University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Secondary Education/Mathematics. I received my Master of Science in Education from Wilkes University in Classroom Technology.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Middle school mathematics is what I most love to teach! I started my teaching career working exclusively with 7th graders for 6 years. I also taught SAT Preparation courses through our local Penn State University, and taught at-risk high school students in a Saturday and summer program through Penn State as well. I did quite a bit of private math tutoring with students from grades 6 through 12 over the years. After 3 years as a stay-at-home-mom, I returned to full-time teaching as a math coach/specialist for 3 years, working with teachers and students in 3 middle schools in one of Pennsylvania's largest school districts. I recently moved to Austin, Texas and currently teach 8th graders in my own classroom again. I admit it.... I can't "just" use the textbook! From the start of my career, I have created my own resources based on student need, student engagement, and student motivation, and have shared many of these successful creations here on TPT. Enjoy!
