Good morning! I am a first grade teacher, formerly PK teacher. I just finished my masters in May (yea!) with a degree in Mind, Brain and Education – a subfield of education. The first program was started at Harvard by Howard Gardner and Kurt Fisher (if you haven’t read any of Kurt Fisher’s work on Skill Theory and you are interested in the cognitive processes involved in learning, you must read his work!)
Cut to the chase. When I moved up from PK to 1st I was shocked by my students’ lack of number sense. I spent an entire year and all last summer trying to figure out what was missing. In Nov I attended a workshop that on number sense. When I heard the presentation I recognized all the “big” names of the research I had been investigating. The workshop was a training session for an iPad app (Native Numbers). It seemed like a valid, robust app, but I am a skeptic and had to know: would this really work.
I am here to tell you that with the first skill set I saw every cognitive model of learning embedded in this app. I also realized that this app is more than a learning tool; it has built in formative and summative assessment as it is adaptive and levels up and down based on student performance and leads to mastery.
Now I am on a “mission” – everything we read tells us our students are lacking number sense. I believe this app is a fabulous tool to remediate those deficits. I have no vested interest in this app except that I am one of those people that has to solve problems and when I think I have found possible answers, I have to share that with others. Our kids are too important not to share---which is why I love reading blogs! I am asking for teachers to simply read the research and then try out the app and give me feedback---or give the feedback yourself to the developers. I am that convinced. I am not a salesman and I feel quite strange in this new role I have taken upon myself…but I have nothing to lose, or gain, except knowing that maybe we can have an enormous impact on our students!

Hi, I bought the elephant unit and I bought multiple copies of the elephant unit for my team to use. The lady in charge of the hippo is going to buy the hippo unit and multiple copies of the hippo unit for our team. Could we instead of going this route transfer the money I already spent from the elephants to the whole package along with the money that the other teacher is going to spend and buy everyone the WHOLE package and they will pay the 2.00 more for multiple licences? I bought the whole unit so I could get the multiple licences under my tpt. I should have checked with them before I purchased. Thanks for your help.

fiveyankees re: Polar Express Fun!
So excited to have all of these great activities for our Polar Express day. I printed everything last night and just got back from Lakeshore with all my laminating. :-) I do have a couple of questions about the time activity. I guessed it is a matching activity but is it missing the 3:30 clock? Pages 49, 50 and 51 also seem to have a lot of duplicate times and I didn't know if I was missing something about those. Thanks for your time, and thanks for a great resource!

I recently bought your Hibernation mini unit and tried it out with my grade one class. You have included a lot of great materials. I was wondering if you could include a second version of the word search? Some of my students are not quite ready to look for words that are printed backwards. They would find it much easier to do a word search where the words are all printed forward.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching in Elementary School for 14 years. I was a fourth grade teacher for my first 3 years. Then I switched to first grade. I will probably retire in first grade.
MY TEACHING STYLE
In first grade I have students of all levels. I try to meet the needs of all of my students by doing a variety of things in the classroom. I teach guided reading in a large group and a small group setting. I incorporate the Daily 5 into my classroom as well. I try to integrate all of my subject areas on a daily basis.
HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT
I was nominated twice for Sylvania Teacher of the Year. I won Teacher of the Year in 2009.
MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY
I attended Bowling Green State University for Undergraduate school and The University of Toledo for Graduate school.
ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
I am the mother to 8 year old triplets. I have two girls and a boy. I also have three step children who I absolutely adore. They are 8, 10, & 12. So yes, I have 6 children and 4 of them are 8. Life is busy but I wouldn't have it any other way!
