There are a lot of ways to use Reader's Theater in the classroom. The reason that I write these for small groups is that I like to use them as centers so that students are rotating through it. In this way, everyone in the center has a part. The problem with long reader's theaters and lots of parts is all the wasted time waiting for your part to happen. To truly practice fluency students need to read. With Literal Lizzy, I was explaining to a group of ESL students the difference between taking something as it says - exactly and taking something as it is meant. This is a part of literature that can really make students who have trouble with language struggle. Most of my questions would center around what did the person REALLY mean. If you were there, how would you have said that differently? I hope this helps you!

I do other types of small group Reader's Theaters but my students have always loved twisting something they are familiar with. Then we can compare and contrast the old with the new. I also use them to introduce the idea of students writing their OWN twisted fairy tale. We then make a class book out of it.

Thank you. One thing my students work on is figurative language and knowing when to take something literally which is why I wrote it. Once we did the script they began coming in with their own phrases that, if taken literally, would be very funny. They also took more of an interest in the Amelia Bedelia series.

There are a few typos "yah" instead of "yeah". I also had to correct one line. The lack of a comma completely changed the meaning. Other than that, I will use again and again.

I appreciate your comments. I use several forms of yeah. There is yeh, yah, and yeah. The main reasons are so that my students will say it slightly different. You are right that they aren't on a normal spelling list. I would love for you to let me know where that comma is so I can take a look at it.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I am now heading into my third year of teaching but my 11th Year of working with schools. I teach a 99% American Indian class. They are 90% ELL and the problem that we face each day is low literacy and low math skills. I've written childrens and young adult books as well as poetry but have not found myself an agent yet to help publish them.
MY TEACHING STYLE
I really believe in the Piaget approach along with the 7 different learning styles. I try to incorporate 3 styles at a time into my lessons to enhance learning. I also focus on high engagement and have yet to follow my lesson plan to the 'T' because of this.

Two Americorps tours of duty, 'Driven to Teach' award, National Poet Society Recognition, etc.
MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY
Two Bachelors Degrees. One in Education and one in Technical Writing.

I live right in Monument Valley Utah teaching Navajo students on the Navajo Indian Reservation, am learning Navajo, can 'speak' sign on an intermediate level, have 6 children, and love my job!
