Leigh Majer  (TpT Seller) re: Polka Dot Backgrounds: Shades of Blue, Green, Red, Pink, Purple, Yellow, Orange
Hi Mercedes! I was so excited to download your backgrounds - the colors are beautiful~! However - I am running into a problem which is not allowing me to use them as I intended. When I add them as my background in my smartboard files they are coming out like a complete background page but it is like the background itself covers 75% of the page and then the pattern repeats itself for the remaining 25% - the result is that it looks like 1 and a quarter pages of polka dots (it is like there is a line dividing the end of the first page and the 25% of the rest of it). I don't know if this makes sense to you but I am hoping you can provide a solution. I purchase backgrounds all the time on TpT and use them in the same way on my smartboard so I know it is not an issue of not knowing how to download them....I tried with both the jpeg and png versions of the backgrounds and it is doing it with all of them. I am hoping you might be able to help me solve this so that I can use them because as it is now, I will not be able to use them. I wish I could send you a screen shot of what it looks like but it will not let me attach pictures here.
Thanks
Leigh

After downloading from TpT, how do you go about using them?

Mercedes Hutchens  (TpT Seller)
Hi Whitney, There should be a PDF included with your font download that has some tips for installing fonts. Unfortunately, many computers are different.

For most PCs:
Right click on the font file and choose open.
You should see a Font Preview window.
Click Install.

Mac:
Double click on the font file.
You should see a Font Preview window.
Click Install.

If that doesn't work, I'd google "Install fonts" and include info about your computer.

I'm not sure how to do it with a transparent frame that you purchased using PowerPoint. If you create a shape in PowerPoint that is the shape of a frame you want, you can insert a digital background into that shape. If you want to use photo editing software, you could use layers to do it but its a bit complicated. If you send me an email with the details of what you are trying to do and what software you are using, I can walk you through it.

Hi! I'm sorry it took a few days to answer. I had gone through recently and deactivated a couple of the freebies I had made early on. I was thinking they were a bit of clutter. Now I realize that people sometimes find my blog posts and go looking and I don't want to disappoint so I reactivated them. Were any these what you were looking for?

My friend, Kari Hefley has quite a few free library labels by lexile. If those don't help, check out her store. Here is a link to one of them:
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Classroom-Library-Organization-Lexile-levels-polka-dots

I also have a bunch of editable files if you are looking for something to match a certain color. Those aren't free. I make most of the editable ones by request.
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Mercedes-Hutchens/Category/Editable

You can also check out one of these freebie that you could use to make some in PowerPoint.

if the bundle has ALL of the materials of the other fractions packets then i want that!!

I'm so sorry for the error. The number of pages is a typo. I have three different fractions bundles. Each one is 20-25% off the task cards it contains. I can't tell from my phone which bundle this question is on. The description of the task cards included is correct and I didn't fix the slide numbers. Each set of task cards has at least 22 pages.

Hi,
I am starting to get ideas of things I can make on TpT. On your download: "Directions for using PNG files" you stated that Adobe Reader does not open picture files. If I create a powerpoint and then add a png file will that work or are you talking about Adobe reader on its own? Can I change a powerpoint to a PDF?
Thanks! Love the stuff you have here!

Some people have their computer set to open everything with Adobe Reader. When they can't open a picture file with it, they write me to tell me the computer says the file is messed up. Adobe Reader opens PDFs. You can use a picture file like a png or jpeg when making items in PowerPoint. Then, you can save your PowerPoints as PDF files. I have a section at the top of my blog called Tips and Tutorials. There are some video tutorials there that you might find helpful. Http://surfingtosuccess.blogspot.com

Mercedes Hutchens  (TpT Seller)
When I first started posting items I used the word labels and people thought that meant they were sized to fit Avery labels so I started using the word frames for my PNG files. Anything that is a PNG file can be resized. A PNG is like a jpeg. It's a high quality picture file. It can be inserted as a picture into programs like word or PowerPoint. The files that are called "Editable Labels" are PowerPoint files. For people that want things as simple as possible, I've made the Editable Labels which already have a text box inserted. You get the better deal buying the items that are PNG files because it includes many pictures. The frames and labels have a white box already inserted. I also have "backgrounds" which is digital paper. Those are what I used to make the frames. If you are comfortable creating The white frame in the middle yourself, you can buy backgrounds and use them for more things. I've had a few freebies on my blog. You could visit it and get the freebies to help you decide what fits your level of comfort ability with technology. Great question! Surfingtosuccess.blogspot.com

I think most people that want this file would prefer the PNGs because they are more flexible for creating things. I suppose that they would be creating items to sell. I have to zip them because they are large due to the high quality of the file type.

I started creating some editable files for people that are more comfortable with premade Powerpoints. I have a black and white editable powerpoint with this style frame and a yellow and white one. Why don't you take a look at those. If there is a particular color you'd like me to make editable I can. Those files are $4 and include a full page editable frame, a page with 4 smaller frames, and a page with 9 small frames. I hope that helps.

Knanney,
I'm sorry you are having difficulty opening it. Since others are able to open it, I don't think it is damaged. I'm hoping to help you figure out how to try to open it differently. First, which Adobe program are you using to try to open the pictures? They are JPEG and PNG files not a PDF. If you've been trying to open it with Adobe Reader, that might explain the problem. Adobe Reader opens a different kind of file. These are picture files so a program that opens pictures will work. Often if you double click on the file, the computer can choose the proper program to open it. I use the polka dot backgrounds in Powerpoint often. To do this, open Powerpoint, go to "Insert" and choose "Picture" then choose the file. Hopefully that will help. Please let me know when you are successful. I want you to be able to enjoy your purchase. :)

I'm so sorry that you experienced difficulty opening the polka dot backgrounds. I'm not sure why it would say the files are damaged. I have resaved all the backgrounds from my original creation. I saved them as JPEGs and as PNGs. Then I zipped the new versions. I will upload them right now. Hopefully if you download it again, you will be able to open it with no problems. Thank you for letting me know there was an issue. I hope this solves it for you.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I've began teaching in 1998. I've taught K-5. Most of my time was spent in 1st and 2nd grade. I especially loved teaching reading and phonics so I became a trainer. I spent some summers traveling and training teachers to teach Success for All and FUNdation Reading programs. This year I have the opportunity to teach mostly 5th grade math. It's a big change that I requested. I love departmentalizing and being able to teach math 3 times a day. I have been a member of my school's leadership team for many years. I am also a BTSA Support Provider for new teachers at our school.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe all students can learn. I focus on having challenging yet obtainable goals and a positive classroom environment.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I have had the honor of being nominated as teacher of the year for the district.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I have a BA in Psychology from UC Santa Cruz. I received my Multiple Subject CLAD Credential from CalStateTEACH. I continue to seek professional development whenever the opportunity arises.
