I'm really disappointed with this download, from your overview I thought there would be more student activity pages. I won't leave a bad review but I'm not happy that I paid so much for nothing.

I am so sorry you feel that way! Have you actually read through the entire product? I believe you will find that there are tons of activities to do with your kids...they are just not necessarily printable. I know that many schools do not have facilities available to print and laminate large quantities of worksheets etc and need to use recyclables and other materials to make teaching aids and assist with learning...not only that, children actually enjoy moving away from pencil and paper activities and being able to create their own learning aids - you will find a multitude of these types of activities included in this pack. If after giving it a good read, however, you are still unhappy with it please email me and I will happily arrange a refund or offer another product from my store in its place. You can reach me at michelle@creativeclassroom.co.za.
Kind regards

What do you do when they slide the dice together and make for example 8/2? My first graders are just learning fractions for the first time. They really don't know to turn it around and say 2/8ths. Just wondering how you use the game.

I would stress before the time (when introducing the game) that the smaller number MUST go at the top...that way they will always make a proper fraction that will appear on the board. Hope this helps! Enjoy the game.... :) Michelle

Michelle on the Snowman Dial-a-Sum Multiplication page you should really have dial a product for it to be correct usage of math terms, shouldn't you?
January 25, 2013 Report inappropriate comment

Michelle Walker  (TpT Seller)
Ahhh, I see what you are saying, Lisenell. You are reading 'sum' as addition and then it should be 'product' for multiplication...here in South Africa we call all equations "sums"...do you do the same?? If not, that is where the confusion is coming in...and yes, you are perfectly correct!! Thanks so much for pointing it out! There are so many subtle differences, beyond spellings, between the way English is spoken in different parts of the world! I am so enjoying learning all these subtleties.
Lisenell, please could you confirm whether the word "sum" is used to refer to an equation there too...because if it is not then I must definitely change the wording on this product!
Thanks so much for taking the time to point this out to me!!

Dear Michelle Walker,
I wish some day (and this way it is a bit of a question too), teachers will going to share editable sheets, templates and products which I can translate in the .PDF
into Dutch (or any other language needed, like French, Spanish)
That would be so great!
That way teachers can share and join Global :-)
At this moment it is only reserved for the kids in my class which understand the basic of English...... and making other kids jealous with it.... while watching that it's so much fun ;-)

Hi, it is so fantastic to hear from you!
I love The Netherlands, visited very briefly many years ago now, but would love to return someday for a longer visit. As I live in South Africa, and speak Afrikaans, I understand some Dutch...when spoken slowly, of course!! :) And can usually make out a little when it is written as the two languages are so close. I would be very happy to create Dutch versions of any of my products for you if you are prepared to supply me with the translation....and perhaps let your other teaching friends know that I have Dutch products available! ;) You can email me directly at michelle@creativeclassroom.co.za...I look forward to hearing from you in the future.
Warm regards from sunny South Africa!

Gabriella

Michelle Walker  (TpT Seller)
Hi Gabriella, Thank you for your question! A little tricky to answer... :) Every lesson/activity in this unit is integrated, eg. a lesson may include discussion, thinking and reasoning (literacy activities) while the topic is landfills...there is then an application where the children make and monitor a mini landfill...which further involves writing up their findings.

Here is a list of the topics covered by the unit: Sorting rubbish; Creating litter monsters from junk; Where does it come from, where does it go? (includes creating and monitoring a mini landfill); Packaging (includes experiments relating to magnetism, sinking and floating and waterproof materials); One man's trash is another man's treasure (recycling/reusing); Magazine madness (a whole host of language activities - reading, spelling, writing, etc) (This section is available as a free download if you would like to take a closer look!!); Making puppets from junk and putting on a puppet show; Maths from trash (includes shapes, capacity, sorting and counting, number work, time, money); Science of Sound (Sound experiments, history of the telephone, writing a dialogue, make a telephone); Junk-estra! (Making instruments and music from junk); Ready, steady...recycle! (PhysEd activities using recycled materials e.g. plastic bag football/soccer, newspaper hockey, etc)...as you can see quite a vast variety of activities. Almost all the activities involve literacy in some shape or form, whether it be discussion (oral); writing (creative, informational, dialogue, etc.); reading; spelling; word work; etc. And as the topic has a strong science/social studies connection most activities include some element of this subject. I hope this helps to make your decision easier...I am sorry I cannot give you more definite numbers of lessons...Please do download the 'Magazine Madness' freebie..this will give you a selection of just some of the literacy activities that are included. If you decide to purchase 'Recycle' you will soon see why it is difficult to actually pinpoint a number of lessons for each subject. Many of the "lessons" are "multi" activities with a number of different activities relating to the topic that all integrate with one another to form an holistic learning experience.
I am sure that you will find this resource "jam packed" with wonderful learning activities and opportunities!
Warm regards
Michelle

How you add the images to your products will depend on the program you are using...the images are usually .jpg or .png files. I prefer working with the .png files because they do not have a white "background". I am afraid I have no real working knowledge of how to use MS software for creating products....what I do know, however, is that most questions are easily answered by a Google search! :) Alternatively, there are many people in the TpT forums who are willing and able to answer questions and help out newcomers! Sorry I can't be of more help here!! Good luck!

Thanks so much! So when you purchase a digital download (right) you receive it right away? How do you then add content to the purchase.
October 8, 2012 Report inappropriate comment
Michelle Walker
Michelle Walker  (TpT Seller)
Yes, you receive the clipart (digital download :)) right away...unless you buy off Etsy - then you wait for the seller to email it to you.

Usually, I think of a product idea first and then source the clipart I want to use...the layout and design work are then my own ideas and interpretation...using the clipart images and paper backings, borders etc. InDesign allows much layering and manoeuvering of text and images...I'm not sure about working in PowerPoint or other MS software. I do believe a lot of teacher sellers use PowerPoint very successfully, but I have not used it in years!! Not sure if I have answered you question!!

Hi, welcome to a fantastic community!! My hubby is in graphic design so I am very fortunate to have Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator to work in. All the backgrounds and most of the clipart in this bundle are from www.justsoscrappytoo.com. The blackline drawings are my own. Just So Scrappy is great for getting clipart because their bundles include co-ordinating background papers, images and lettering....great value for money! However, the downfall is that everything is in colour and that there are no blackline images. If you want access to both the colour and the blackline of the image then I would suggest trying Scrappin Doodles, KPM Doodles or Melonheadz (store on TpT).
Hope this helps!

Hi Gayle
Have you downloaded my free Monster Problem Solving unit? Monster problem Solving 2 works in the same way. Yes, each monster is just '1'...each problem indicates a number of monsters to be used and then based on the other criteria students have to work out how many of each color monster is required to solve the problem with the correct total number of monsters.
Hope this helps! :) Michelle

Although the letter pages only make up a small percentage of the file the work that went into creating them way outweighs the time it took to create the pages of words. Might I suggest that you follow my store and wait for a sale to purchase this pack? That way you will have the letters for now as well as the words should you ever want to use them in the future. This unit relates directly to the story of The Gingerbreadman and is not "Chrismassy" at all. I think it would be quite suitable for the beginning of the school year. It includes lots of language activities, math, science and technology/art. You can see a complete list of the activities included in the product write up in my store. None of the images relate to Christmas.

I'd be happy to send you the answers. You can email me at michelle@creativeclassroom.co.za. There is a recording sheet included for the students to solve the problems on. It has spaces for them to record the question card they are answering and a large space to work out in. I kept the spaces big for littlies to be able to work on the sheet...if your students are older you could probably reduce the size of the recording sheet and copy 2 to a page...that way your students could answer 4 cards on a single recording sheet. :) Michelle

Oh, Susan! I am so pleased you sent another message! My apologies, I typed a lengthy response yesterday and must have forgotten to hit the 'reply' button before I left the page!! So sorry!
In reply to your original question... The font I used (Smiley Monster) does not have capital letters. I already altered the 'i' by using an 'l' (L) because 'I' just isn't right as a small letter. As the problem cards are written in bullet form (and bullets don't always begin with capitals) I didn't think it would pose too much of a problem...most of the bullets begin with numbers anyway. Looking at the file again I think my error was to place fullstops (periods) at the end of the bullets....perhaps I should take these out to make it more correct as bulleted lists...? If you would prefer the question cards in a different font that has the option of capitals then please feel free to contact me again via the Q&A or directly to my email: michelle@creativeclassroom.co.za. I thank you for supporting my store!

Thank you for your kind compliment! I use a layout program called InDesign to create my units....but it is expensive (my hubby is in graphic design that's why I have it!) I know that many teachers here use Powerpoint to create their units and are quite successful with that...they say it is easier and better than MSWord. Once you have an idea of what you want to create you use the clipart, papers, borders etc. to "pretty up" an otherwise ordinary page of text. Good fonts are also important. I use a lot of freely available ones from kevinandamanda.com. I hope this helps to answer your questions...please feel free to contact me again should you have further queries. My email address is michelle@creativeclassroom.co.za.

Hi Michelle,
I just bought "My Little Book of Fractions" and I am unable to open it. It says there is an error in opening the document because the document is damaged. I bought 3 other fraction activities with yours and they opened without a problem. Is there anyway to email it to me or do you have another suggestion I could try? Thanks!

That is very strange...I have just downloaded it myself and it was fine. Do you have the latest version of Adobe reader? Perhaps try updating your reader and download again...if you still have trouble leave me another message in the Q&A with your email address and I will send you the file. :) Michelle

Hi Kristen
I sometimes have trouble viewing the previews as well, I think it is during busy times when the system is a little overloaded.... perhaps you would like to try again...? The packet consists of doubles matching cards for numbers 1-9, 10's to 100 and 15,25,35 etc to 95. Also included are 2 board games to consolidate doubling of numbers 1-5 and 1-10; as well as 2 recording sheets...all with a tennis theme! Hope this helps... :) Michelle

Hi, Michelle! I am in love with your layouts and clipart used in your lessons. Do you create your own images, pay a membership to a clipart sight, or have you found them somewhere online for free?
Thanks!

Hi Michelle...Thank you! I buy my clipart from many different online stores. You will find links on the front cover of my products to the places I have purchased the clipart for that particular unit. Most of the fonts I use are free to download from www.kevinandamanda.com. Putting it altogether, in terms of layout, is my own application of the clipart and fonts. I am lucky enough to have fantastic software (InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator) which certainly helps. Thanks to this terrific software I do also create some of my own clipart (mostly blackline at this stage). I plan to start selling the odd bit of clipart in my TPT store soon - so keep a look out! Please feel free to contact me again should you want more information!

Katy Engle  (TpT Seller) re: Dinosaurs and Dodos Thematic Unit
I work at a private school that teaches from a creation-based perspective. How much of this Unit discusses the rise/fall of dinosaurs, dinosaur periods, and/or evolution?

Michelle Walker  (TpT Seller)
Hi Ahoykaty and thank you for your query. My thematic units are all based on creative thinking and creative expression activities. "Facts and figures" do come into the unit but they can easily be adapted to suit your needs and requirements. Many of the activities have a variety of "spin off" integration work that allows you to expand the theme as you see fit. The types of activities included in this unit are: using question words and obtaining information from the past, "finding" and making fossils, how did dinosaurs become fossils, gathering information from artefacts or pictures, looking at dinosaur habitats and creating a "habitat" mural, recording weather in your area, measuring (mass and length) using standard and non-standard measures, data collection (graphs and tables), oral/creative writing activities, a dinosaur research project, design a new dinosaur, shapes, oral hygiene (and dinosaur teeth), looking at extinction and endangered species, and numerous art ideas. Sure, there are discussion type activities that could extend as far as you see fit, but the majority of the content can very easily be adapted to suit any environment. The focus is most certainly on CREATIVITY, using dinosaurs to spark your students imagination! I hope this helps! All the best, happy teaching! Michelle

How much of this unit would you say is a good fit for kindergarten? K-3 is a broad range; and I don't want to purchase this unit if most of it is not appropriate for K.

Hi Alison, thank you for making contact. I believe that you would be able to use the majority of the activities with students in kindergarten. Wherever possible I have suggested how to simplify or expand on an activity to suit students at each level. Should you decide to purchase and you would like anything simplified still further e.g. recording sheets I will be happy to help you out in any way I can. You can email me at michelle@creativeclassroom.com. I like my customers to be hapy with what they have invested in! Please keep in contact if there is anything else I can help you with. :) Michelle

The Allman Files
The Allman Files  (TpT Seller) re: FREE Monster Problem Solving Math Center
Michelle,

I just used your beautiful activity with my two children and was really impressed. I'd like to suggest that you either make the pieces smaller or the "this is what I think the solution looks like" workspace larger. The space is just too small to hold the correct solution when we used the pieces.

I also posted a link to your worksheets on a very popular math blog because a discussion emerged there about the wording "More this than that." It will probably get some traffic: http://blog.mrmeyer.com/?p=12041#comment-348014

And I hope you get some positive results from it. You deserve it.

Wow! Thank you so very much!
The intention for the worksheet is that the children draw their answer...perhaps I should make that a little more clear in the explanantion (Thank you for pointing it out!) and perhaps I should include a "mat" for illustrating the answer with the playing pieces. I really appreciate your input and I am so glad that you felt it beneficial for your children! Thank you, again! :) Michelle

Hi Nancy
I'm not so sure how far you go with your littlies in the US so the best I can do is give you a break down of exactly what is included to help you to make a decision. Have you downloaded the Halloween freebie? The Fall pack has 7 pages of matching cards exactly as in the Halloween pack. It then has 5 lowercase/uppercase recording activities/worksheets where students match a pumpkin in the LH column with a cart in the RH column. Then a few pages of more advanced upper/lowercase worksheets similar to the Halloween unit. Theen 9 pages of ABC mats where students add the missing lower/uppercase letter card and a simple recording sheet with blank spaces to copy the letter order from the mats. Then a few more advanced worksheets. The board game at the end is in the form of 'pick a card, name the letter/sound and then roll the dice to move'.... Hope this helps. Please be assured that if you do decide to purchase the unit and it is not suitable I will happily email you something else in its place. Kind regards, Michelle

I saw your store on the home page of TeachersPayTeachers; so, I thought I would look at your freebie. I left you a rating. Well done and very colorful! I hope you will have time to rate one my free product listed below.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/My-Products/Edit/Step-1/Using-Digital-Root-and-the-Divisibility-Rules-to-Help-Reduce-Fractions

Just a couple of suggestions. Put your advertising at the end of your product. You want buyers to see your product first. Also, I know it is obivious what to do, but a directions page right after your cover page could list specific directions as well as how to adapt the letters for other lessons or games. Good luck as you sell on TPT. I do LOVE your products!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I taught in an independent school in Port Elizabeth, South Africa for 16 years prior to the birth of my daughter. I am now self-employed as a resource developer creating thematic units, worksheets, posters and games for teachers using the wealth of knowledge and materials I developed in my years of teaching and giving private maths tuition to grade 1 to 7 children. I have developed an online resource center that teachers subscribe to to download teaching resources. You can visit my website at www.creativeclassroom.co.za.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe in a creative approach to teaching young learners and like to integrate subjects so that learning becomes exciting and meaningful. As far as possible I try to include a variety of learning styles in my lessons and activities and I love using discussion and creative thinking as a basis for communication and learning with children.
