My 6th grade students (gifted/advance) are finishing this up as an end-of-semester project. I love it! An enriching project that you have made very easy to implement. The students are engaged and forced to "attend to precision." Beyond the review of fractions, this teaches them excellent ruler skills, such as centering and how to make a line straight in reference to a page margin, that many students are never really taught.

I used this last year in a gifted fifth grade class. We all loved it! Started it with a group of gifted fourth grade but it's a bit too challenging. Any chance you have a simplified set of directions available?

Middle School Math (TpT Seller)

Hi,

I do not have a set of simplified instructions. My best suggestion is to walk the students through the parts that are too difficult for gifted 4th graders. Either that or just save it until they are older.

Have a great day!

You are right. The answer key on 29 #5 should say 2x + 3. Thanks for letting me know. I am on Warm-Up 25 with my own class right now so I hadn't caught that yet. Thanks!

Hi John,

I have been asked that a number of times now but it will not be in the immediate future if I do write one. I have taught 6th and 7th grade for 25 years but never 8th grade so I would likely need to work with someone to put out such a book.

Annette Shaw (TpT Seller) re: 6th Grade Math Common Core Warm-Up Program

This looks really good, but I have a question. When I look at the 6th grade warm-up there are several questions I know the students won't know without a lesson. It is something that I teach in 6th grade. Do you plan your warm-ups as a review?

Middle School Math (TpT Seller)

Hi shawmtn,

Yes, I realize that there are questions that the students won't know how to do the first time or two. I just give a quick explanation and move on. By the time they have seen some of the concepts a few times many will know how to do them. Sometimes the students actually know how to do something before we get to the lesson because they have seen it in the warm-ups 4 or 5 times.

I grade the warm-ups on completion and students correcting the problems that they miss. Therefore, I am not concerned about them missing new concepts. It is just another exposure that will help them to learn.

If you download or read the preview pages I discuss all of the ins and outs of the program including the idea of pre-teaching. Again, I just offer a quick explanation and move on. There is not time or reason to try to teach each problem for mastery on the warm-ups.

I start at Warm-Up 1 and move straight through the program. Sometimes I take a break to use my Speed Skills program for a week or do a project where I don't use the warm-up. Most days I do use a warm-up.

I hope that helps.

Hello Prabhjot,

Teachers Pay Teachers can refund the $7 to you if you send them an email and explain what you told me.

Or, if you wish, you can visit my website at www.digitallesson.com and choose another lesson at no cost. Just send me an email at digitallesson@yahoo.com.

Either way is fine with me. Have a great day!

Buyer re: Toilet Paper Geometry Project - Surface Area and Volume

is this lesson useable in Canadian classroom - is it easy enough to convert to metric?

Middle School Math (TpT Seller)

Hi Sarah,

I would think so. It involves determining the area of a rectangle and then the volume of a rectangular prism and cylinder. I don't see why you could not use metric units instead.

Thanks,

Mark

I have a question similar to blaramie...will there be other modules? I'm looking at implementing this program now as well as next year. I would want more basic level skills for incoming 7th graders as well as additional 7th grade skills. (For example whole number one-step equations, mixed integer operations, etc.) Would you consider selling a editable format? This is an incredible program, and I am happy to have purchased it. I am just hoping for a more budget-friendly addition to what I've already got. Thanks!

Middle School Math (TpT Seller)

Hi mathteacher 00,

As I mentioned in my reply to blaramie (completed moments ago) I do not have present plans for more Speed Skill modules but if I feel there is a need I may at some point add to them. I like your ideas for future modules.

Speed Skills took me a number of months to complete with the 4,000 problems that are included as well as all of the supporting documentation, graphs, individual statistics, and so on.

I would not offer an editable format because my name and brand are on Speed Skills and I need to protect the quality and be aware of all of the content.

Thanks for you complement in calling Speed Skills "an incredible program." I enjoy using Speed Skills in my own classroom and it is fun to know that others will also benefit from the program. Just yesterday I finished the "Two-Step Equation" module with two of my classes.

Have a great end to the school year!

Brandi L. re: Speed Skills Challenge Foundational Fluency Program

I just purchased your Speed Skills e-book, and I'm very excited about getting started with it. As I teach 6th grade, some of the skills are not in my "must cover" curriculum. My question...is there a possibility you will be making any more speed skill modules? I am interested in basic multiplication an division facts, simplifying fractions, improper fractions to mixed numbers, equivilant fractions, simplifying ratios, and probably many more I can't think of now (more skills for 5th-6th grade level). Also, I was wondering if you ever repeat modules throughout the year (and any advice you have on how you plan that). Thank you for any information you can give me. As a first year teacher, I am always searching for "best practices" that I have yet to encounter or learn myself through trial and error. ~Brandi Laramie

Middle School Math (TpT Seller)

Hi Brandi,

Thank you for your questions and for your excitement about Speed Skills. At present I am not planning on another Speed Skills book, but it may happen at some point. I tried to choose important middle school math skills that I had not traditionally seen in speed drill sheets. Some of your suggestions are great and I will refer back to them should I decide to do another eBook

In my classroom I have not yet repeated modules throughout the year. I have thought about doing a one or two day refresher just to see how students perform and to reinforce key skills.

Wishing you a great first year teaching. Feel free to visit my website at DigitalLesson.com and let me know if I can help you in any way.

There is a big yellow and red box on the right hand side of every page on my website, www.digitallesson.com. I know that some schools have filters that will not allow a subscription box to show up. If this is the case you will need to sign up from home and perhaps use your home email address instead of your school address.

Annette Shaw (TpT Seller) re: Amateur Architect Fractions Project

I love this lesson and my 6th grade students are really enjoying it too, but I'm confused on the "Project Terms Transparency." The measurements are not the same as the ones on the "Grading Template." Am I missing something? I'm also curious if you have other projects similar to this. I have students requesting more. :)

Thank you very much,

Annette Shaw

Thank you very much,

Annette Shaw

Middle School Math (TpT Seller)

Hi Annette,

The purpose of the "Project Terms Transparency" is to give students access to the vocabulary that they need for the project. For instance, when it says "the top of the house wall" in the directions students can look at the project terms sheet. The sheet does not give the real dimension answers. It also shows students how to correctly label the measurements on the project and reminds them which direction is length and which is width in this project. I usually give a copy to each student to keep in their project folder so that I don't have to project it all period long.

I have a number of other projects which you can either find on TPT at my Middle School Math store or by visiting my own website at www.DigitalLesson.com.

Thank you and I'm glad you're enjoying Amateur Architect.

Misty G.

Thank you for your response. I believe that you are correct and that they will fit well with the new CCSS, I'm just not sure at what grade level they are going to fit. Some of the examples I have looked at appear to work with 6th grade, but I don't teach 6th grade. I think I will ponder this a little longer. When you get a chance to look at them you might post those alignments with the activities. Again, thanks.

Middle School Math (TpT Seller)

Your welcome, jeandu05. I have a lot of projects on my plate right now but I do need to correlate the eBook with the CCSS in the near future.

Misty G. re: Middle School Math Lessons, Projects, and Games eBook

Do these activities align well to the new CCSS? I would really love to purchase this item but I need to be sure they are going to meet the new changes.

Middle School Math (TpT Seller)

Hi jeandu05,

Thanks for your question. I have not yet correlated this eBook with the new CCSS, partly because my own school district is not going to full implementation until 2 years from now. Several teachers have told me that they are looking forward to using the activities, lessons, and projects when they implement the common core. The preview pages can be downloaded and they clearly show what skills are being covered with each activity. Sorry I can't give you a more definitive answer yet. My sense is that because the Common Core does more application, activities, and problem solving that the eBook should fit in well.

Thanks,

Mark

Hello,

I discovered your products today and I'm very impressed! I purchased the Data and Statistics book this afternoon before I realized you offered the package of all 6 ebooks. I also purchased that product (as well as the Speed Skills product). I'm wondering if I can get a refund on the Data book since I now own it twice?

Thank you.

Hi jennamaries,

The refund on your first eBook is fine with me. However, I do not control the collection of payments or refunds on Teachers Pay Teachers, they do. I will email them and let them know the situation. I have never had a refund request on TPT before so I do not know how they treat such a request.

My suggestion is that you also email them and let them know of your overlapping purchase. Just click on the Contact link at the bottom of the website to send them a message.

I will do what I can to help.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught middle school for over 25 years and have specialized in Mathematics, specifically 6th Grade Math and Pre-Algebra. I have been a district Math Mentor Teacher, the Mathematics Department Chairman numerous times, and have presented at several local and regional mathematics conferences.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I always try to find the balance between learning the prescribed mathematical standards and putting them into practice in meaningful, hand-on activities. Students need to know the grade-level skills, but I also want them to experience mathematics in a personal, powerful, experiential way. My math lesson, projects, and games are designed to promote these meaningful student interactions with mathematics.
