I purchased the energy labs. I read through the lab titled heat and temperature. I do not understand the reasoning for the rubbing alochol part in the lab. The temperature of the rubbing alcohol is warmer than the temperature of the air around it. Is there a reason for this? Thanks!

Actually, if the alcohol is in the room for a while it will be at room temperature. When the thermometer is dipped initially into the alcohol, it measures the temperature of the alcohol. Then, when it is removed, the temperature drops, but this is because the evaporation of the alcohol causes heat transfer out of the thermomter and the thermometer measures a temp drop. When the thermometer is placed back into the alcohol, the temperature rises back to room temperature (which is the temperature of the alcohol). Most students think that the alcohol is cold (as a property) and I wanted them to see that there is something else going on - namely that the temperature drop is from evaporation not something that is inherent in the temperature of the alcohol itself.

Good question - if you slightly melt them they will attach, but that is alumninum foil. Does it look like string in the picture? If so I will get in and clarify that so that it is not confusing.

Mr. Mckee--your energy labs look terrific. I will be teaching 6th grade phy sci this next yr (less than 2 weeks away) and I've taught 9th grade phy sci and upper level HS science and discovered that 6th graders are closer to elementary level in conceptual learning, vocab and other learning skills--at least in the high risk school complex I am in. Are your energy labs "basic" enough for 6th graders to grasp or do they need to be tailored from their existing design? Thank you. mattie

I am a third grade teacher in AZ. I was looking at your experiment with light using different colored LED lights. Would I just use a regular flashlight with different colored LED lightbulbs? Or do I need to purchase special flashlights? Also, I feel very unknowledgeable about the physics of light, yet our state standards require us to teach light/sound. Note, we are not given any materials or teacher's guides. I didn't know that yellow was a secondary color of light until I read the sample of your product. All these years I have been teaching that the primary colors are red, blue, and yellow. So, this isn't true? I did notice a mistake on one of your teacher guided inquiry questions to begin the lesson, you said to ask the kids if yellow is a primary color, and your answer was no because red and blue produce yellow, when I think you meant to say, green and blue? I am trying to educate myself, and so far your information as made the most sense to me. If you think my third graders can handle this experiment, I will probably purchase your download from Teachers Pay TEachers. Thank you for your time,

You could use filters, but make sure the filters are good...some filters that are red, blue, and green let a lot more of the spectrum through. Sargent Welch sells some filters that are $10 and are encased in cardboard slides. There are 8 colors in a set.

In fact, red, blue and green are the primary colors of light and cyan magenta and yellow are the primary colors of PIGMENTS. There are two sets of primary colors, one for light and one for pigments. TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I have 16 years of teaching experience and curriculum development, having taught in high school for most of that time. I have extensive experience in teacher professional development primarily with middle and elementary school teachers. Most of the professional development is geared toward an inquiry approach to teaching and learning, with a great deal of emphasis of changing the beliefs of appropriate instruction that will maximize student achievement. Currently, I am the program director for GK-12 at the University of Central Florida, conducting professional development for ninth grade science teachers and research scientists, utilizing an inquiry pedagogy.
MY TEACHING STYLE
Scientific inquiry is the best way to teach and learn because it engages students in their own critical thinking and problem solving. Instead of teachers "telling" students what to do, the students construct their own meaning from the lessons. I utilize an ABC - CBV approach: Activity Before Concept, Concept Before Vocabulary. This is an approach that is opposite of what most teachers traditionally use in their classrooms. However, it is most effective for student learning.
