Nathan McNamara  (TpT Seller) re: Penn and Colonial Pennsylvania Activities
Hello, I live in PA and give the third grade dreaded PSSA tests. I am always looking to share ideas with each other to help master the PSSA's I was looking at your materials available, check some of mine out also and follow me. I am new to TPT, so I am in the process of adding lessons, games, and other things also.

A great place to look might also be resources provided for other states' exams. For example, VA has many documents available online associated with its standards of learning tests. In particular, it has an expanded scope and sequence with lesson plan ideas for many subject. States like VA have had standards testing in social studies for many years, so you may be able to find many good ideas. Let me know if there is anything you need. :-)

How do the students know if they did a good job? Do you have problems arise?

I did this lab with a 7th grade classroom, and they required a significant amount of scaffolding to help them. After reviewing with each group what they had done, I had them compare their decisions with the decisions of other groups. Then we discussed in small groups and as a class which decisions students thought were the wisest. I tried not to lead them to the answers; rather, I just wanted them to use critical thinking skills to evaluate what they and others had done. Older students might be able to do this comparison process with less hand-holding.
The only problems I have experienced when doing this activity are when groups got into heated arguments. (After all, they were on the young side.) I made sure to go over group manners with my students every time we did a group project.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Although I have worked in many different types of instructional roles in schools, I am currently working as a social studies teacher in an alternative high school in Virginia. I am particularly interested in ways to differentiate lessons to reach many different types of learners and ability levels in a classroom.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I enjoy making lesson plans interactive and engaging, with many different types of learning activities in each unit.
