Hi Liz I am moving from 1st grade to 4th grade next year and am trying to wrap my brain around how to shift things. I do daily 5 with my 1st graders nod saw you had a recording sheet to go along with that but I was wondering, what do your students listen to on listening to reading? I know what I do will have to change but I'm not sure what others are doing. Thanks!

Actually my Daily 5 stations are very similar to first grade classrooms in my school! If your kids need listen to reading for fluency practice you could do Freedom Flix from myapl.org (our local library). Our science teacher has them listen to the taped recording of the textbook. For higher groups, I turn that computer station into grammar practice with random websites and games.
Let me know if you have any other questions as you transition!

Do you have any more of the informational resource packets like the Revolutionary War one? I am a teacher near New Orleans and cannot find any packets aligned to the LEAP transitional test for this year. Before I try to make more on my own, I wanted to check and see if you had any more. I am willing to pay for them. :)

Thank you!

Yes! I have a short one on locomotives, one about severe weather, and an activity that lets students compare last year's "informational resource" instructions to this year's "research to build knowledge". If you're interested, I'll post it in the next few weeks.

for determining theme how do i use the tic tac toe?
January 10, 2014 Report inappropriate comment
Miss Liz
Miss Liz  (TpT Seller)
Give each student their own tic-tac-toe board and a marker. With the texts, you could give each kid a copy or make one for a small group, cut them, and place them in the middle of the table. For whole group, you could put the texts on your Smartboard or overhead if you have one.

Select one student to read a text. Students should put their marker on the theme associated with that text. From there the rules of traditional tic-tac-toe apply.

I hope that is a helpful description. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you for your purchase.

I've used this for many years in my ELA classroom. Out of the five sections for each day of the week, Monday Math focuses on the literacy skills needed to solve word problems. The other four days/sections focus on ELA skills. If you plan to use this for 4th grade ELA, I think you'll find this to be totally appropriate! Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Hello...I was wondering what else would you need to create these centers? Do I print laminate and my students can do these centers on their own? Thank you!

Miss Liz
Miss Liz  (TpT Seller)
Hi there,

To answer your questions, some of the centers require a few extra materials. But others only require hitting print and making some copies. And yes, your students can do these centers on their own.

For example, from the thumbnail, "In My Book" only requires you printing the instruction sheet and students responding on their own paper about their own book. "Giddy Up" is just a worksheet that you can print. "Tisket Tasket" is a little more involved; you can write words on small strips of paper and place them in plastic eggs. "Nonfiction Scavenger Hunt" only requires making copies of the worksheet, then kids can use any nonfiction book you provide.

Have you downloaded the preview document? There are some notes about implementing these in your own classroom. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

I'm always looking for valuable morning work opportunities and was happy to find this. I really liked the preview and how you address different content throughout the week. The only issue I had was with the "gun control" topic listed on one of the questions/week. Other than that, I really look forward to using our product in my classroom.

Miss Liz  (TpT Seller)
It does not. I give it to the kids every Monday and they work at their own pace, but we go through the answers together for each section on that day. It only takes about 5 minutes, but allows for valuable discussion. There are a couple of questions here and there that have more than one right answer. Occasionally, I have my kids "teach" and go over the answers for that day. They LOVE that and lead a discussion just like I would!
Do you think an answer key would be something I should consider including? Would that work better for you in your classroom? I'm always open to suggestions. I frequently update documents in my store and send free upgrades to buyers.
Let me know if you have any other questions!

Tracie W. re: Literacy Centers for Intermediate Classrooms (50+!) {CCS aligned}
Do you think these would be appropriate for a 6th grade ELA class?
November 13, 2012 Report inappropriate comment
Miss Liz
Miss Liz  (TpT Seller)
I scanned through the document again before replying. Honestly, I think you'll find several activities that will be appropriate for your 6th graders, like creative writing, fluency work, analyzing vocabulary in abstract ways, categorizing, responding to text, non-fiction text features, and decoding w/ roots and affixes. I've used them in my 5th grade classroom for years, and with my experience teaching 7th grade ELA, I push my 5th graders hard.
You will find activities that seem simple for your class, like alphabetizing and making words. But to be honest, I feel like these skills have fallen by the wayside lately and they serve as a good review for upper elementary classrooms.
Several customers have commented on the challenging nature of these centers. I say, "Push your kids! Set high expectations!" So I think you'll find them appropriate for your curriculum. I've used them in 3rd, 5th, and 7th grades. One year, my group ranged in reading levels from 1.2 to 11.7 if you can believe it. That's why I created centers to reach a wide range of learners.
Please let me know if you have any other questions! Thanks for your interest.

Adena B. re: story elements with Rope Burn from Harcourt Storytown
Hello Again Miss Liz,
I'm looking at what you have as a preview for Lesson 1 and I really like. My real problem is that I have a dualboard which uses Einstruction software. I soooooo wish I had a smart board so I could use all off the flipchart stuff out there. Do you have the stuff in power point format? Of course powerpoint is not a flipchart and wont be able to do all of the embeded stuff, but at least it's better than nothing. I'm in panic mode right now since school starts here in three weeks. I had to loop up and have nothing. Being total self-contained and planning for everything is a curse this summer and I'm just running out of time. Anyway, I am interested in pretty everything you have for 5th grade Storytown lessons. Thanks!

Hi there,
I feel your pain and I've been racking my brain over the last few days over the best and fastest way I can help you out!

First, I thought maybe glancing at my lesson plans would be helpful. They'll give you an idea of the structure I used, which might be useful until you get into your own flow. I added them as a free download at my store: "Lesson Plan Template" www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Miss-Liz

Next, I added a new product to my store just for you! Vocabulary Games for Harcourt Stories offers simple, fun, and rigorous activities to accompany several stories. Once you teach your students those structures, you can use them with anything.

I'm contemplating how to change my flipcharts for ActivInspire into Power Point files. What about a Word doc? Do you have an ELMO? Would that be helpful? I'm working on that! I'll continue to contact you as I add Storytown products to my store. In the mean time, let me know if there's anything specific I can dig out or create for you.

Finally, check out this website. Unfortunately, I didn't discover it until the end of my year in 5th grade! It would've been a big help as I went through the curriculum for the first time, so I hope you find it to be helpful as well: http://www.pcboe.net/les/elderweb/fifth%20Grade.htm

Best of luck,
LIZ

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Over ten years, I've been lucky enough to teach in Illinois, Mississippi, Nevada, and Louisiana. Now I can take what I've learned from each of those unique experiences and compose thoughtful and effective lessons.

MY TEACHING STYLE

My classroom moves at a lightening fast pace. I use Power Teaching for student engagement. I never allow students to be off-task, even for a second. I pack a lot of material into a short time period. I value "stuff that's not on the test", like memorizing weekly fluency poems and instilling a love of reading. I'll laugh and cry with my students and let them know, we're in this together.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I immediately think of the accomplishments of my students. One year, our fifth grade class raised their collective reading level from 3.3 to 5.5 in one year. A few years ago, seven of our "red" students moved up two indicator levels to "green" and have maintained that throughout their elementary careers. Last year, we were blessed with a homeroom who were not necessarily the best and brightest, but they were the sweetest and most hard-working group I've ever had the pleasure of working with. This group went from 62% proficiency to 85%.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I'm proud to have graduated with a degree in Education from Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois. I hold endorsements in Art, Language Arts, and Middle School Instruction. When I found myself teaching in Reno, Nevada, I completed an ESL endorsement from Sierra Nevada College.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

It has to be effective; it has to be easy to implement. This is the mantra I live by when creating curriculum for my classroom and my TPT Store. As a seller, I want to make your life easier so you can focus on your students. Don't see something you need? Just send me a message...I may have just what you're looking for!
