Thanks for your quick response. I will definitely come back to you after the lesson (2/5/13). Could you upload the solutions of the questions, that go with the song text, as well??? That would be great...Best, Benita

Dear Mrs. Elitzin,

I've just downloaded your material about the song "Biko" and I think it's really good.. I'm a trainee teacher in Germany and I have an assessed lesson about this topic. Do you have more material about this song? And the solutions for your worksheet would be great! The topic of my assessed lesson is "Songs in the English Language Classroom" and I need to choose a song dealing with the apartheid system, which I think is perfectly represented in this song. If you have any advice I would highly appreciate this.
Thanks a lot,
Benita Heigermoser

Thank you! Beyond the apartheid-related lessons here, I do not have any additional materials. With this particular song, I let my students listen to it one time w/out the handout, then a second time w/the guide. We then used the guide to facilitate classroom discussion. As an extension you could have students write their own song using similar metaphors or imagery to convey some historical aspect. Please let me know if you have any additional ideas to correspond to this lesson, as I'd love any suggestions! :)

Dawn Goslinga  (TpT Seller) re: Ancient Egypt - A Brief Overview - Powerpoint (PPT)
I downloaded the ppt, and it looks great, but there is an error. On the river page, it says the Nile flows north to south. I think you mean south to north. It flows toward the north.

It lists the Nile as 4,145 miles long, but the line breaks after 4, so it's hard to read.

On the page where it talks about Egyptians inventing paper, it says "Egyptians were one of... " and the "f" is covered by the picture.

Is it possible to fix these? I already paid for it. If my supervisor should walk in while one of those pages was being shown, she would mark me down for it. There's no way for me to see the entire presentation before purchasing it.

Thank you! I sure hope I can use it -- it looks great.

I just bought Organizing Your Essay and was using it with my students. I like how it was precise and to the point. But I am stumped what is FEEDCATS? Thanks, Trish

Mrs. Elitzin  (TpT Seller)
Sorry, I just now saw this question. FEEDCATS stands for Facts, Examples, Elaboration, Details, Cause-Effect, Anecdotes, Testimonials, and Statistics. I like to tell my students they need to "Feed" their "Cat" in order to make him bigger and stronger and healthier, and so too must "feed" their essays with these things in order to make it powerful.

Have you downloaded this lesson? For this lesson, students are taking a "test" where they work in teams to create a map made out of a cookie sheet, frosting, sprinkles, and other candies to represent the parts on the map. After completed, each student must label the parts of the map, and are assessed on their understanding. I used this with the continent of Africa, but the lesson is a good jumping ground for ANY sort of map-test, and is easily adaptable.

Hello. I downloaded a couple of your handouts on Rwandan Genocide. One of your listings is a free download: In Their Own Words: victims, perpetrators, bystanders, rescuers. I have tried everything, and can't get it to work. It never loads. I am extremely interested in this PDF file. Could you check to see if it is posted correctly? Thanks!

two questions:
1 what happened to vs machine, science and technology?
2 why, oh why why why are you teaching young impressionable children "man versus" when you should reasonably be teaching "character versus" (after all, 51% of the population is female)? and after all literature is all about character not about men.
July 22, 2009 Report inappropriate comment
Mrs. Elitzin
Mrs. Elitzin  (TpT Seller)
Great questions! In general, "man" (like the pronoun "he") is used to refer to all. It is somewhat all encompassing and is generally the way textbooks/college literary courses refer to the aspects of theme (Man v. Man; Man v. Nature; etc). However, if you find it offensive, you may easily substitute man w/character in the powerpoint presentation. If you have difficulty doing so, please let me know and I can help you adapt the presentation to fit your needs. I did not include man v. science/technology as it was not apart of our curriculum (was grouped w/ Man v. Society); however, once again, you could very easily add an additional slide or two to this presentation to make it your own and to better fit your needs. I hope that helped!

What is the average cost of the supplies needed for the Africa Cookie Map making lesson? I teach 100 students and we don't have a consumable budget. I would have to pay for the supplies myself. I want to make sure the activity cost fits within my budget before purchasing your lesson. THanks.

Mrs. Elitzin  (TpT Seller)
Good question! With my students, they were so excited about this project, that I was able to get enough students to sign up to bring in all the supplies. The kids were in groups of 4-5; one student would bring in the baked/rolled out cookie sheet for his/her group, while the others would bring in things like frosting/sprinkles/candies/etc.

I'd imagine if YOU paid for the entire project it would be very costly (calculate the number of cookie dough tubes you'd need for each group, the number of frosting containers, candies, etc.) As a result, I'd try to get your students to bring in the supplies (or money for the activity). My students were always highly motivated to bring in supplies for this project (not the case with other projects) especially when I explained that if they could not afford the supplies, they could use different colors of construction paper to represent the different geographic features--if they went that route (while they would receive no grade deduction and it would be a fine map), obviously it wouldn't be edible. When I put it that way, I never had a problem getting supplies :)

I hope that helps!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am a highly certified language arts and social studies teacher, and have taught in California, Kansas, and currently North Carolina. I received a BS in secondary English education, and have worked as a language arts teacher in three schools, improving writing test scores by 30% in one year! I have taken additional course work and exams to be highly qualified in secondary social studies as well, a subject I have fallen in love with as a teacher! I am currently taking an unpaid year of leave to stay at home with my now 8 month daughter, Elizabeth. The additional income from this service will be greatly appreciated! As a teacher I strive to appeal to all learners. And I hope you find that many of these lessons and materials reach out to the various learning styles. I appreciate your business!

MY TEACHING STYLE

As a classroom teacher I know first hand that lessons MUST appeal to the different learning styles, and must connect with students' interests, or it will simply be ineffective. I hope that you find all of my lessons and materials to reach your visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I graduated Suma Cum Laude with a 4.0 from Wichita State University, Kansas. I am highly certified in the areas of Language Arts and Social Studies at the secondary level. In one year my scores from the 7th grade writing test helped to improve the overall schools' percentage by 35%. The average had been 55% passing, my students passed by 75%. The second year at the same school, my scores were even better with 85% passing. This was a school with a base population in the inner city Raleigh. I am currently working on my masters degree, and hope to one day be Nationally Certified.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

Graduated Suma Cum Laude 4.0 GPA with a BS in Secondary English Education. I have since taken additional course work and exams to add Secondary Social Studies to my certificate. I am currently highly certified in both areas.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I am taking 1 year unpaid leave to stay at home with my first child. I greatly appreciate your business! Every little bit of extra income is incredibly helpful to our family! Most of my files are PDF format so they can open on ANY computer. However, some are word or Powerpoint files. If you have problems opening these, I can very easily turn them into PDFs and email them to you. Sometimes Macs have problems with PPT files. Please contact me with questions/concerns at j_elitzin@yahoo.com before posting a negative reply. I'm more than willing to either fix the problem, or contact TPT for a full refund. If you like my work, please provide positive feedback and/or add me to your favorites! THANKS & God Bless!
