This is my sixth year in fifth grade and my ninth year of teaching. I'm a military wife so I've had the opportunity to teach in Massachusetts, Washington, and now Virginia. I've taught third, fourth, and fifth, but my true love is definitely with my fifth graders!
I'm a good mix of demonstrator and facilitator, and I think that my style is constantly changing as I adapt to the students in front of me year after year. It is most important for me to create a safe and positive learning environment where conversations about learning can take place and all moments can be learning moments. I use a great deal of the Responsive Classroom approach, especially when it comes to the first six weeks, modeling (and more modeling and MORE modeling) and academic choice. If I learned anything from college, it's that lectures are BORING so I make sure my students are part of every learning experience with lots of opportunity for discussion and movement.
Teacher of the Year Nominee in 2011, 2012, and 2013.
I've got lots of degrees! Two associate's degrees, one in paralegal studies, and one in criminal justice. My bachelor's is in political science/pre-law, so you can see where my career was headed. Then I started coaching and realized there couldn't be anything more rewarding than making a difference in children's lives. So I did a two year M. Ed. program at a college in Western Massachusetts and completed two years of service with AmeriCorps at the same time. By the time I finished in 2005, I couldn't wait to get in the classroom. And here I am, 9 school years later, ready to begin another great year of teaching!
I'm a military wife. I've seen 33 of the 50 states and I love to travel! I think our best education comes from our personal experiences and so I try to get out and see new places in our world whenever I can so I can bring those experiences to the classroom.
