baxsom re: An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge Before During and After Lesson
Hi I teach an ELA middle school class in Louisiana. I teach 7th graders. The social studies teacher has asked me to find some activities to do in my ELA class pertaining to the Civil War. I'm looking for a short story and I am wondering if this short story is too advanced for 7th graders. Please let me know what you think. I really appreciate it!

Thanks for your interest. This is a great story. The vocabulary may be a little advanced for them, but with some discussion, it may be o.k. If I were teaching it with 7th graders on a 50 minute period, I might divide it into scenes. There is the beginning, then, the flashback, and then the flash forward. It might be really effective to do it in those scenes. It all depends on the level of your kids. Another thing to try is to read it in the form of a play. I have posted a play I wrote for this story on my store if you are interested. Thanks.

I bought your product and plan on using it soon. I was just wondering, it seems that your class is a size 20. I have 35 kids, should I just add more situations? Thanks for your help, I LOVE this idea!

I apologize for taking so long to respond to this question. I had classes from 25 - 28 last term. I would add more situations or just allow them to pair up. Hope this helps.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching middle, high school and junior college English and history for fourteen years. It has been a great experience. I love teaching because it gives me a chance to be creative and to have a job that is always interesting. No day is ever the same, thank goodness.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I use a variety of activities so that my students can learn according to their specific learning styles. I love to incorporate technology any time I can including allowing students to create movies to demonstrate their understanding of a concept. I also love arts, crafts, and skits in additional to the traditional ways of learning.
