Good morning! I am a first grade teacher, formerly PK teacher. I just finished my masters in May (yea!) with a degree in Mind, Brain and Education – a subfield of education. The first program was started at Harvard by Howard Gardner and Kurt Fisher (if you haven’t read any of Kurt Fisher’s work on Skill Theory and you are interested in the cognitive processes involved in learning, you must read his work!)

Cut to the chase. When I moved up from PK to 1st I was shocked by my students’ lack of number sense. I spent an entire year and all last summer trying to figure out what was missing. In Nov I attended a workshop that on number sense. When I heard the presentation I recognized all the “big” names of the research I had been investigating. The workshop was a training session for an iPad app (Native Numbers). It seemed like a valid, robust app, but I am a skeptic and had to know: would this really work.

I am here to tell you that with the first skill set I saw every cognitive model of learning embedded in this app. I also realized that this app is more than a learning tool; it has built in formative and summative assessment as it is adaptive and levels up and down based on student performance and leads to mastery.

Now I am on a “mission” – everything we read tells us our students are lacking number sense. I believe this app is a fabulous tool to remediate those deficits. I have no vested interest in this app except that I am one of those people that has to solve problems and when I think I have found possible answers, I have to share that with others. Our kids are too important not to share---which is why I love reading blogs! I am asking for teachers to simply read the research and then try out the app and give me feedback---or give the feedback yourself to the developers. I am that convinced. I am not a salesman and I feel quite strange in this new role I have taken upon myself…but I have nothing to lose, or gain, except knowing that maybe we can have an enormous impact on our students!

If you have any questions, please e-mail me at tatergraderswife@yahoo.com Check out the app at www.nativebrain.com – you can find the background of the developers and read about the research behind the app. You can also watch a video on that site or go to these YouTube links:

I am a former teacher turned stay at home mom that is about to go back into the classroom. I will be teaching first grade which will be a new experience for me. I love your blog and ideas. I love the idea of Calendar on the Promethean board which I will have in my classroom. I was just curious if you would be posting an August 2013 (Back to School) calendar? It looks like you just started selling for January. If I purchase, would I be able to make any adjustments if needed depending on my class, etc. Thank you for your help!!

Our school system is going with McGraw-Hill's "Wonders" series for the upcoming school year. I have purchased and used all spelling games you have made for Reading Street, our current reading series. If you would develop "I Have Who Has" spelling word games for the "Wonders" series, I would purchase every set! You have made my year a hit with these cards. I use them during my intervention class and with our afterschool program!

Hi! First, I'm so sorry you are experiencing difficulty, but hopefully these suggestions will help. The first thing I would suggest is to select the text and change the size of the font, it may be too big for your screen. Also, make sure you have the correct font installed on your computer. The fonts I used are comic sans and Wish I Were Taller. If you don't have the font just select the text and change it to a font you do have. None of the graphics should be cut off, because I sized it to fit the screen in Active Inspire. There could also be an issue with your default screen size. This file is for Active Inspire software. If this still doesn't help let me know. You can e-mail me at queeqag@aol.com.

Yes, I did fix that but I included seperate penguin materials that you could use when you study penguins. Hi ,
Sorry you are experiencing difficulty. Customers with the problem you describe have been able to resolve by one of two methods:

1. It sounds like you are either opening with an old version of Adobe Reader or if you have a Mac, you may be opening it with a Mac program called "Preview" and not even know it. Preview has documented problems opening modern Adobe files. If you have a Mac, try opening Adobe Reader first (rather than just double clicking on the file), then open the file within Adobe Reader. You may also choose to set the default reader to Adobe Reader by following the instructions below.

2. If you are still having opening and you know you are using Adobe, look to see if you have a newer version. You can check the version by clicking Help then About from within reader. If you have a version earlier than 5.0 or 6.0, you should update your reader. Please let us know if either of these actions solves the problem.

According to TPT founder, 100% of fuzzy graphics is attributed to an old version of adobe or a non-adobe product, such as Preview.

To change the default reader on a Mac to Adobe:
Click on the icon of a PDF file type then choose File --> Get Info
You will see a dialog box labeled something like this "Gobble Gobble.pdf Info
Near the bottom, you will see a section titled "Open With:"
That indicates what application on you Mac is the default if you open the file from the desktop.
Click on the pop-up to bring up the list of possible applications and select Adobe Reader (whatever version is installed), then click "Change All" to make it the default application for all .pdf files (if that is what you want to do).
The OS will then ask you if you are sure, click "Continue."
Now the Mac will use Reader instead of Preview.
Make sure the version is new enough by following set 2 above.
If this doesn't work let me know....and we'll get it fixed.

Hi! Yes I'm in the process of making the second grade version (2008). Unit one should be ready in the next two weeks. If you'd like to receive an email when I post the games be sure to follow me. Thanks so much for your question and for your purchase!

Do you just laminate and play or do you cut out the player boards? If laminate and play, they sit side by side to play?

Yes, I laminate the entire game board and it's ready to go...and they do sit side by side to play.

Hello again Ms. Arnold,
I wrote earlier in June about your short and long vowel posters on your blog. I've found out that I can print them in poster if its in a PDF. Are you able to email me the file in PDF? My email is aenull_08@yahoo.com

Thank you in advance!

Hi Ashley
They are already in PDF format on my blog. Once you click on the link you have to go up to the top...usually in the left hand corner and click download original or download, then save it to a folder on your computer. After that you can open it up in Adobe reader then print. Hope that helps.

Hi! I realized after that your newest spelling pack was for first grade not second. Do you have a pack like that for second grade reading street 2007? Thanks so much!

Hi Ms. Arnold,
Will you be making any spelling unit games for Reading Street 2007? Would love it if you do!
Thanks,
Michelle

Hi Michelle,
I've looked at the phonics progression for RS 2007 and it appears to be the same as older versions. Has something changed with RS phonics progression with the 2007 edition? Are there different phonemes? Let me know and I'll get those done too.

Even though I don 't use Reading Street, I would love to get these because of the word patterns, but I have 27 kiddos. Are there directions for what to do with a BIG class?

Hi!
You'll be happy to know that I've revised the games and made 30 cards in each set.

Hi Ms. Arnold,
I downloaded your short and long vowel posters on your blog but for the life of me, I can not get them to print the way they should on poster. I have an HP computer with a Cannon printer. I have tried everything that I could think of and I am completely bummed that it doesn't print all the parts to the "poster".
Any advice would be great!

Hey Ashley! You have to have an HP Printer. I'm not familiar with Cannon Printers and the only poster printing I've seen is on HP printers. Hope that helps.

Ms. Arnold,

We just love your Reading Streets activity packs for Units 4 & 5, however, I cannot find anything for the first three units. Do you have those available?

Thank you,
