I created these note-taking pages as organizers when I had a hard time looking for what would work for my classroom. After tailoring different ideas from various teachers, I feel that these are general enough for teachers to tweak and tailor to their own classrooms, teaching styles, resources, and content/grade level focus (cultural regions/tribes). It is not meant to be a full unit plan, but a starting base for teachers to adapt to the curriculum and resources they already have. I hope this clarifies the purpose of the project resources.
Please email me, as I'm more than happy to walk you through some of the steps of the unit and find ways and share resources for how to make this unit work with your students. Hope to hear from you!

I love the idea of having the students write a story. This is adorable. I wish there was an quick answering guide for the teacher. I am providing this for a non-English teacher and I am afraid she will not know the correct answers to all the areas that need to be fixed. I like the vocabulary part of this unit too.

I co-teach a summer school class and both of us are very excited about using this story this summer. We are going to have the students do 4 edits per day, so that we can get through it this summer. I ended up buying the book, so I could have an answer key. I LOVE the fact that Ms. Zare provided a "how to" section, so that I can do this for another book in the future.

Thanks Melissa! I'd heard about the book from a co-teacher and wanted to make it easy to use and reusable for future years. It is definitely a staple in my grammar program and have now encouraged teachers before and after my grade to use it which will be fun to have kids who already know the routine! I looped with my kids this year so I definitely am doing the same thing but a different story for them for next year. Good luck and feel free to contact me if you need any tips/suggestions! :)

Sorry to hear that you feel that way Sylwia. No, it is not meant to be a full blown out unit plan, but an adaptable structure and graphic organizers that teachers can tailor to their needs, as we all teach different cultural regions/tribes/etc.
I've created these to adapt for different regions and teaching, as I teach 4th grade (CA history) some years and 5th grade others (US history). Both require different levels of resources and focus for materials, readings, and final products in terms of expectations based on the grade/writing levels/content.
If you would like more background on the additional steps I use in regards to teaching this unit, as well as potential online resources, I am more than happy to share. I'd love to hear what grade you teach/where, and what your intended goals with this unit are, so that I can give some tips on what has worked and ways you may be able to use these graphic organizers best in your classroom. TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I've worked with students grades 1st-6th with the most experience at the 4th and 5th grade level.
MY TEACHING STYLE
I LOVE keeping learning hands-on, relevant, and engaging. Students are the main guides as we incorporate their interests, learning styles, and inquiries. Technology plays an important role in my classroom, using videos, internet, word processing/publishing tools, iPods, iPads, projectors, SMART Board, and more. Most importantly we learn from each other and have fun!

I'm a 3rd generation teacher and love every minute of it! I currently work at a charter school and have a lot of flexibility to do hands-on project based learning.
