My students enjoyed completing the powerpoint. I presented the lesson as review and made it into a competitive whitebaord game. The only drawback was the constant clicking for animations...

Couldn't find sugar cubes in my area (unless I wanted to spend $30 to have it shipped) so I used the base 10 blocks - worked great! Challenged the students to visualize and manipulate the problem both physically and mentally - worked great for my 5th grade resource kids!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
This is my nineteenth year of teaching. I currently teach second grade. Much of what I believe about teaching evolved during a four year teaching opportunity that I had in a multi-age setting working with third, fourth, and fifth grade-age kids. I believe that truly exciting things happen for kids when we take off labels and limits and leave each to develop at his own individual pace.
MY TEACHING STYLE
My classroom is truly a workshop where students construct much of their own understanding through investigation. There is nothing more exciting than observing as a child makes a discovery and immediately lights a wildfire of interest throughout the classroom as others dive in to try the same strategy or method. I believe that two key components in any classroom are laughter and song. Since I know that different parts of the brain are stimulated through music, I attach tunes as often as possible to ensure that my kids have a hook for new information. My theory is simple: "More brain-more gain."
HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT
I served as a mentor for the Basic School Institute and was selected as Harrisonville School District's Educator of the Year in 2008. My greatest honor has been to serve as a cooperating teacher to five student teachers and then watch them move on to bless the lives of children in their own classrooms.
MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY
I received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Missouri in Kansas City in 1988. I completed my Master's Degree in Teaching in 1997.
ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
I have been married to the same wonderful, patient man for thirty years. He understands my passions and quirks; he knows that we will have to spend part of each vacation collecting rocks for my science center, and that I may, at any moment, grab a napkin or a receipt and jot down lyrics that will help my students remember a fact or strategy. We have two grown sons and three grandchildren. I love exploring new places, biking, hiking, running, and fun in the sun. My husband and I enjoy playing with our grandkids and cheering them on in their many endeavors.
