I taught second grade at my old school, and we had a similar system--quarterly rewards for good behavior--but students didn't keep a balance sheet. They were basically given demerits for misbehavior which the teachers tracked. If they had too many--an average of one per week--they did not get to participate.

I actually moved to a new school this past year, and we have quarterly behavior rewards. Students receive a "balance sheet" each Monday morning which they staple into their agendas. (Their agenda books are taken with them to each class and used as hall passes.) Students earn pretend money for following rules, turning in homework, etc. ($5 per class per day for a total of $20 per day or $100 per week.) Money may be deducted by any teacher who deals with a student breaking a rule or not having homework. (The teacher deducts the money from the balance sheet and signs his/her initials.) Each Friday in homeroom, students tally up the amount earned for the week and give their balance sheets to their homeroom teacers. The amount in entered into a spreadsheet. At the end of the nine weeks, students who earned 80% or more of the amount possible participate in a reward. These may be a movie with popcorn, extra recess, or anything we think would motivate the students. This year we actually had "Twin Day" where students could dress up like other students, get their pictures made together, and get small prizes for the ones who look the most alike. They also watched a movie and had popcorn. The students of the teacher keeping the non-participators are split up between the remaining classrooms. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions.

We read Dr. Seuss books on the floor in groups for fun, ate green eggs and ham with birthday cake for lunch (provided by the cafeteria)and allowed them to have a "toy party" for recess. (Students aren't usually allowed to bring toys to school.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
This is my 26th year as an elementary school teacher, and I'm currently working in 4th grade. I enjoy using technology for teaching and for creating teaching materials. I am the webmaster of my intermediate school, and also maintain my literacy team's blog.

I use some cooperative learning structures, especially those created by Dr. Spencer Kagan. It's important for me to show the relationship between what we are learning and the real world to keep students interested. It also doesn't hurt to keep their attention with a little humor!
