You mention "platforms" in your rube goldberg project. What did you use for the platforms? How many do I need for 21 students? Did they work in 2,3,or 4 students?

I'm so sorry my response is late! I have 24'' by 24'' sheets of plywood that the students build their machines on. I have them work in groups of 4, but you could do 3. So you would need 7 platforms for groups of 3, or 5 platforms for groups of 4 (with one of 5).

Hi Mindy,
Sorry for not getting back to you immediately. I think I may have fixed it and there is a preview of the first page. However, the format looks all messed up on the preview. The downloaded page would not look like that.
Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks, Nicole

Hi Nicole-

Are there guidelines for how to build a Rube Goldberg machine?

Thanks! Beth :-)

Hi Beth,

Yes, there are guidelines for the project. The 2 page project includes all the directions, including guidelines for building the project. For example, they are limited to a 2x2 feet surface to build their machine on. I have plywood cut out that I let them use for a base to their project. They also need to have a certain number of simple machines included. I show them the game "Mouse Trap" as an example of a Rube Goldberg machine and I also show them a clip on youtube of a Mythbuster's special on Rube Goldberg machines. This gives the students an idea on what the machine must do (a simple task in a complicated way). I hope this helps! Let me know if you have further questions!
