Hello. I purchased this and I think it is excellent. When you have a chance, would you mind writing a sample of how you would word an explanation for the cookie lady sheet? I love the idea of a concrete, engaging way to practice, but I seem to get myself a bit tripped up when I go over what I'd say to introduce the activity. Thank you!

Hi Kathleen,
Glad you like the file! I usually just tell the students that while we are subtracting from the plate, we are adding to her stomach. I have them write the subtraction equation representing how the cookies are taken away from the plate, and an addition equation representing how the cookies are being added to her stomach (under the assumption that she continues eating). It is also a good way to introduce a story problem, since they can tell the story of how she eats the cookies (and how many). The blank page is for them to create their own "story" about eating the cookies.
Hope that helps,
Nikki

Hi Teaching Queen,
The activities in this file use the first 300 Fry Instant Words. According to Fry each set of 100 words is meant for one grade level (the first 100 words are first grade, the second 100 words are second grade and so on). However, I have always taught/expected my first grade students to know all 300 of these words by the end of first grade. (Which is appropriate for the level of learners I work with.) So that is a professional decision you will have to make. Hope that helps!

Thank you for answering my question! That is what I was hoping you would say- our district is about to look into adoptions and my choice would be to spend money on resources and materials rather than an actual adoption that won't fit our needs. Loved the rigor I saw in your products and that you're working it without a "program" ☺

Hello,

I'm not sure what you mean for "strand." The ELA standards are organized by strand, and the math are organized by Domain > Cluster > Standard. I can tell you the number of activity pages varies, so there are anywhere from 5-35 pages per standard. Together the whole file is 265 pages and there are 4 domains with 21 standards total for first grade. Hope that helps!

Yes, this file contains a few (2-4) questions for EVERY first grade math CCSS. I use it as a summative assessment (at the end of the school year) and give it to students who I am testing for gifted services or advanced placement (at the beginning of the school year or as needed).

I also use "Common Core Math Assessments by Standard (Grade 1)." This file has a full page for each standard. I use it to make pre/post formative assessments. I choose which pages to use based on what the students are learning - mix and match style.

You can find it here: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Common-Core-Math-Assessments-by-Standard-Grade-1-377063

Hope you find them useful!

Niki, walk me through what this might look like using this with cooperative partners?
I'm not understanding the different crayon coloring...is this what they circle every time they read on a different day or time? Then graphing in that color? Seems very cool, I'm putting this on my wish list for now. I do need more student generated activities, and this would be a good one. Susan Pepps

Hi Susan, hope you are having a great summer!

I'm not sure how you would use this particular activity in cooperative partnerships... I have used it in centers and homework before.

The students use a different crayon color for each word. Example: if the worksheet had the word "like" in the jumbled word box at the top of the page, the student would choose a color (let's say blue) and circle every "like" in the box with a blue crayon. Then the student would count how many "like(s)" were circled blue and graph that number accordingly - also using the blue crayon to graph it.

Hope that makes more sense! :)

Evelyn B. re: Common Core Math: Composing Shapes (Grade 1)
Hi Nikki, I'm sorry to continue to bother you with this...as stated previously, the other units opened and printed from my computer without issue. The composing shapes unit, will open as a PDF file, but when I try to print the file, another window appears (and I've never had this happen with any TPT files-256 purchased products) and it wants to me to save the document and PRINT TO FILE. So, I save and then another window opens - computer does not recognize file. prn, locate program on computer to open file. Unfortunately, I do not have whatever I need to open a .prn file. I'm going to ask the tech teacher to assist me with this, and then TPT. If this were a $1 packet, I would chalk it up as a loss and find another product, but this was $4 and I would like to use it.

Thank you for responding.
Eve

addendum: I had the tech teacher take a look at the issue. He said that the PDF is saved to some file on your end and since I'm not the author to the file and do not have that file on my computer, I am unable to print. I'm not tech sauvvy so I have no idea. If I am not able to figure this out, I will chalk it up as a loss. I've never had this happen. :(

I sent the file to the tech teacher to see if he could open and print from his computer. He was able to open and print, but he said it took a looooong time to download the file. Although he was able to open and print, he wasn't able to save it. The file locked him out. So, at the end, I at least have one copy : ) I will try to open/print from my mac or another friends computer. THANK YOU and truly sorry for this..

Hi Again Eve,

I'm sorry things still are working for you; thanks for the detailed info. I am happy to email you the file (my email: ArtstruckAgain@gmail.com), but I do not believe that will fix your problem. Based on your comments, the problem is with your printer settings. Especially since the other teacher was able to open and print. (BTW, I am the "Technology Leader" at my school.) When you go to print, you need to uncheck "print to file" in your printer dialog box (I had to click "Advanced" to find it for mine). This seems to fix the problem in multiple forums in which users experience the same problem.

Please email me if you are still unable to print and we'll find a solution (I would like you to be able to use it, and would not want you to take the loss).

Hi Eve,

I just downloaded the file myself and it opens as a PDF without any problems, and I have tested it on PC and Mac. I'm not sure which you are using, but here are some possible solutions to try:

- update Adobe Reader (or whatever PDF viewer you use) - http://get.adobe.com/reader/

- check your print dialog settings - http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1176411?tstart=0

Based on the previous user's comment, I believe the current file worked for her. Hope that helps!

I bought your product , Differentiated Spelling Program, this morning and I am so excited to use it. I have not been happy with my current spelling program and was looking for something better. I have been looking for a good spelling program that is differentiated for all of my different levels with word list. After 2 hours of research I felt that your product was the best. I printed off the product and started organizing the materials and I only found 3 small correction to make this product even better. There are 2 Short E 2 letter shape boxes and no Short E 3 letter shape boxes. The second Short E 2 letter shape boxes is suppose to be a 3 instead of 2 on top. The other 2 minor corrections that I have are with the suffixes 3 and 4 word sort pages. The second Suffix 2 word box should be changed to a 3 and the Suffix 3 word box page should be changed to a 4. Like I said these are only minor errors but I just wanted to let you know for your reference. I am in no way mad at all about this I just wanted to let you know. This is from the US Copyright Office: "Copyright, a form of intellectual property law, protects original works of authorship including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, novels, movies, songs, computer software, and architecture. Copyright does not protect facts, ideas, systems, or methods of operation, although it may protect the way these things are expressed. Copyright does not protect ideas, concepts, systems, or methods of doing something. You may express your ideas in writing or drawings and claim copyright in your description, but be aware that copyright will not protect the idea itself as revealed in your written or artistic work."

The idea of graphing sight words is not copyrighted, in fact you will find many variations with a quick internet search. Teacher Created Materials and Scholastic resources have similar sight word graphing activities in their books too.

Since we use different words (Dolch and Fry) maybe you would be interested in linking our items to one another?

Hi bethanylturner,

I just downloaded the file from TPT myself and it opens fine on PC and Mac. I'm not sure which you are using, but you may want to see if you have the latest Adobe Reader (http://get.adobe.com/reader/). Or maybe try re-downloading the file from TPT. Hope that helps!

Hi Diana,
There are 6 counting, 39 addition and subtraction, 18 money (coin), 6 measurement (inches and centimeters) and 24 time questions on the end of year assessment. The file also includes 3 other assessments for the year, and grading rubrics. Thanks for the question!

Update: I now have a First Grade Common Core Math Assessment available, check it out:

Debra G. re: Phonemic Sound Sorts
Hi Nikki,
I need a little help. Today I was going present the first page of your phonemic sound sort. I gave the instructions along with what I thought were the correct name for the pictures, but I had too many in some numbers. Could you please send me the names of the pictures for the packet? Thanks,
D. Gould

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

This is my eighth year teaching first grade in Highland Park, IL.

MY TEACHING STYLE

During my student teaching, "differentiation" was the current buzz word. Therefore, I was "raised" in education to differentiate for my students' needs. I assess continually and conduct a lot of small group instruction to differentiate for my students each year.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Presenter at the 2013 Illinois Computing Educators (ICE) conference.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I have a Master of Education in Reading and Literacy degree from Benedictine University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Illinois State University. I have a Reading Specialist certificate and have earned endorsements (and am highly qualified) in Middle School Education, Mathematics, Language Arts, and Social Sciences. I am also a "Technology Leader" in my elementary school building.

Highly Qualified in Mathematics:

Math is one of my favorite subjects, and always has been. In college, I chose to specialize in mathematics with my education degree, even though I had tested out of any math credit requirements. I loved learning to teach math as much as learning it myself. I am an active participant in district math curriculum and assessment design committees. I am especially well versed in the first grade Common Core State Standards for mathematics. I design my math activities based on the CCSS and their specific criteria. I see many educators and publishers trying to match their previous work to the CCSS. Many of these products claim to “align” with the CCSS; however they do NOT contain the same level of concepts and strategies outlined in the standards. When you purchase my math materials, you can be certain they are not aligned, but designed based on the CCSS by an educator who understands mathematics.
