Shakespeare's language certainly requires effort and can be discouraging for younger readers --and, to be truthful, for older ones, too. I hope your students were not put off by this exercise, and were able to apply their understanding of both the cheerful and the gloomy words to one of the assignments suggested in the teacher's notes. My goal with Shakespeare is always to have students feel accomplishment in at least tackling his text to the point that they gain confidence and prowess with each attempt. I hope this was and will be the case for your 7th graders.

It is hefty, isn't it? Over half the guide's substance is teacher notes and the key, but that still leaves sixteen pages available for student use. Fortunately, you can utilize all or part of the guide, depending on your classroom needs and available time. If you have no interest in having students analyze two of the film's poems, chuck those pages entirely. If you only need to hold students' attention for the film's duration -- this especially applies if you are using the guide as an emergency sub plan -- have them only fill out the Venn diagram. Need material for ye olde five-paragraph persuasive essay? Have them complete the entire guide and then treat the last page as space for a rough draft evaluating Lee's film as an adaptation of Austen's novel, or use their pre- and post-viewing answers on characterization to rate the actors' best and worst performances as Austen's characters. Don't need any more essays to grade? Choose some or all of the post-viewing questions for small-group or whole-class discussions.

This is an incredible activity which will greatly enhance showing the Lurhmann version of Romeo and Juliet. I really like to show my classes this version but have struggled with the idea because I've never had a meaningful assignment to give along with it. Now I do!

I'm out of town today and so don't have immediate access to my Play On! text, but I know there are no scenes from R&J in it. I used scenes from other plays -- Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Henry V, Richard IIII among them -- to allow my students to apply the skills they learned from their R&J study to other examples of Shakespearean drama.
Hope this helps. I can give you a more specific answer late tomorrow.
