I'm preparing this for my word wall and noticed that although with- and sub- are on the spelling lists there aren't word wall cards for them. I also discovered that the card for homo- has a typo. The card says different but the prefix means same. Since this document wasn't editable, would it be possible to get a revised document with the corrections? Hi! I really don't have anything written out that I follow every single year as a rule. I use stories from our third grade Reading Street series because they address economics in the first unit, then I work in activities from my Economics 101 pack. Towards the end of the unit, we do the lemonade economics unit. Are you referring to the progression of the lemonade unit itself?

Buyer re: Teach Me and I Remember: Task Boards for 3rd Grade CCSS Reading Standards
I am not sure what you mean by "using the back of one board". Can you clarify this for me? Also, I am assuming that you do this at the end of a group of lessons about the standard. You give them 90 minutes to accomplish this task according to the teaching duration listed. Is that accurate?
April 7, 2014 Report inappropriate comment
One Extra Degree
One Extra Degree  (TpT Seller)
The "board" is the task board....the menu of activities that I created for each standard. I run the standard-based board off, and then I copy it double-sided with the "Lesson Planning Sheet" on the back so that I can have the kids write more specific details about what to include. It helps me differentiate more easily that way so not every group has to do the exact same thing, and I don't have to muddle through umpteen million menus to find the right one. :) I hope that makes sense. We do typically spend about an hour on this depending on the skill...start to finish. Sometimes I give them less time... sometimes I give them more time. I only do this kind of a lesson once I have drilled a particular skill and I feel confident that students can handle it. Because they have a strong understanding of how to do this, I give them about twenty or twenty-five minutes to put their presentations together. After that, we reconvene and each group of partners shares their lessons. We give them feedback about what we liked and my students share out what helped them solidify their learning. You could certainly chunk it out, simplify it, or do whatever you need to do to make this work for you. :) With my population of students, I have found that this is time well-spent, and they have demonstrated great mastery. I hope that helped clarify some of your questions.

I did include a reference page where my students can list sources. It's nothing overly complicated though. They just list their sources on the lines. In the future, I may make it look a little more sophisticated. I just bought more clip art to expand the list of famous Americans, so I plan on tweaking a few of the pages to improve the file even more once I add those people to the mix. :)

This list isn't extensive, but here are a few of the CCSS that are addressed at the third grade level. You can search for more on www.corestandards.org to see how the standards span the different grade level bands. That's my go to site for Common Core standards. :)

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.3.3
Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.3.1.a

Do you recommend doing this or Word Warriors first?
March 19, 2014 Report inappropriate comment
One Extra Degree
One Extra Degree  (TpT Seller)
I recommend doing the Affix Avengers first. Prefixes and Suffixes are more "common" and are somewhat of a prerequisite skill for roots. All of the words have a base word, and kids can generally see how the prefix/suffix changes the base word. With roots, I think it's a little more abstract. :) There's not always a root... for example... we were just reading a text on Friday. Some of my kids were stumbling over the word "subterranean" until we broke it down and looked at how sub means below/under, and terr means ground. There isn't really a recognizable word part like there is in unCOMFORTable or disAGREEable. I think that makes it more difficult... and it shows up later in the standards.

Hi, Megan! Thank you! I don't have a true pacing guide in my school/district. We follow Reading Street's curriculum, and I have even made changes to that. I do have charts I've created to show the sequence of RS concepts, but it's so bare bones. It's the skeleton to my classroom instruction, for sure. I definitely layer things on top of that, and I have never taken the time to actually create a detailed map of all of that. If I spend time mapping everything out, it cuts into my planning/creating. I wish I could help, but I don't know if I would be too beneficial, to tell you the truth. If you have specific questions, I am happy to help. I just don't have a "map", per se.

Hi, Beth! Thank you! I honestly only graded my students on their procedural report. Not every box was beautiful or polished, but I didn't want to make that mandatory. You saw some highlights on the blog, but some were more simple than that. I didn't want parents to feel obligated to dump money into the project if they didn't have the extra resources. Again, regardless of how fancy their project was, I really only assessed the final procedural text. :)

Good luck! I hope they get back to you quickly! :)

Hi! Someone else left a Q&A about something similar. I would contact TpT on this one. The file itself is intact, which I can say with confidence based on the popularity of the unit, BUT something may be going on with downloads on TpT's end. I would create a help ticket to send to them. Sorry I can't be of more assistance! I hope they get back to you ASAP! :)

The top part of each page gets cut off when I print. I have even tried cutting it down to 90% size and it still is cut off. The download looks fine-the print version is a problem. Is this a common problem with this set? Help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello! No, it's not a common problem. This is the first time I have ever heard of it happening with any of my files. I just pulled up my pdf and printed a sheet, and it came out perfectly fine. :) I really don't know what to suggest, but I wish I could help. I have sent the file to friends as well, and everyone else seems to be able to print it just fine. Have you tried a different printer, by chance?

Do you use a rubric to assess the reading response menus? I purchased them and really like them, but I need a rubric to go along with them so my students can clearly see where they need to improve and where they're doing well.

Hi, there. I do not formally assess them. I use them for homework primarily, and sometimes as a morning work assignment or center assignment. I write constructive feedback back to them to let them know what they did well and what they need to work on, and I pull them back during morning work time to conference with anyone I want to talk to one-on-one. I'm sorry, I don't have rubrics. I could probably whip something simple up that would apply in a general way to all of them, but I don't anticipate creating a separate rubric for each individual board. I created this to be simplistic process to practice reading skills as a formative assessment, and to be super duper honest, I am SO SWAMPED with grad school, presentations, and classroom obligations at the moment. If a simple rubric would work for you, please let me know, and I will try to get to it whenever things slow down a bit.

Hi! I just downloaded your Landforms for Young Globetrotters. (I love it, by the way!) But I noticed toward the end of the packet you have two Venn Diagrams for "Valleys" and "Canyons", however, the pictures at the bottom of page 64 look like a lake and ocean. Should the Venn Diagram on pg 64 be for "Lakes" and "Oceans"?

Thanks!

Hi! It's pretty high up on my priority list at the moment! I have to finish my PowerPoints for my upcoming SDE presentations over winter break, and then that's my next project. I've been toying around with lots of different ideas, and I am really looking forward to creating something to go along with it!

Allison K. re: Reading Response Menus: A Recipe for Reading Success!
Hi Amanda,

What grade level do you use this product with? I teach 3rd grade and I use Reading Street. I noticed that you also use this series as well. Do the kids choose their own story to use or do they use it to go along with the weekly reading story? I think this is a great product, I am just not sure if it will work with how I teach reading right now. I don't have reading groups with leveled readers. We all read the same story each week and I differentiate the activities/lessons as needed. I think this is a wonderful product, I am just not sure how I would use it right now. Thanks in advance for answering my questions!

Hi. I do teach with Reading Street. I teach third AND fourth grade this year. I use this product with both groups. I assign it for homework, and they read 20 minutes, then they complete one box per night. Typically, they complete four boxes/responses per week. They self-select books for independent reading, but I strongly encourage them to read books on their reading levels. If you didn't want to assign it for homework, you could use it with the main selection as morning work each day that week. That would be any easy tie-in too! Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions that I can answer. :) Blessings!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I currently teach third and fourth grade kiddos, and I enjoy every second of it! Over the past eight years, I have absolutely fallen in LOVE with my job! I am extremely passionate about teaching and creating, and I enjoy being able to share that passion with others!

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe that teaching stretches far beyond the content areas. First and foremost, I work on establishing strong relationships with my students based on trust, mutual respect, and empathy. I realize that I am educating little people, and that even little people have problems that occasionally distract them from learning. I embrace this, and strive to meet their emotional and academic needs while at school. Sometimes we all need a pat on the back or a supportive smile to get us through the day. Beyond that, I take a child-centered approach to learning. I feel that if I say or do too much I am, in fact, inhibiting the students’ learning. My instruction is very much interactive, hands-on, authentic, and tailored to meet each individual student's needs as much as possible. I want the students to think intently and critically to find solutions, reflect on their learning, and gain independence. My role is to facilitate this learning and encourage them along the way. I provide the opportunities and then support as they complete assignments to ensure that every child feels a level of success and confidence in my classroom.

I also enjoy drawing, reading, singing, shopping and dancing. I thrive on being able to think creatively and think outside of the box. I love running! It is a great stress reliever! I also love traveling, spending time with my husband {of course}, my dogs Loralei and Stella, family and friends, and I love experiencing new things. I've recently delved into the world of workshops, and I am HOOKED! :)
