This was my first purchase on TPT and it was a big purchase since I normally would not spend $7 for something like this. I was a little disappointed that there were only a couple of questions per chapter. I am struggling with teaching this book and making it more interesting for my students, which is why I purchased this unit to give my lessons something extra. I actually came up with some of the questions in the unit before I even purchased it. The overall unit can be useful as it includes vocabulary from each chapter. I would have liked to seen more questions in this unit that I can ask and discuss with my students which may have made the purchase worth while.

There are nine chapters in this book with one worksheet devoted to each one. The comprehension activities are varied so that students are not just writing answers to who-what-when-where type questions. I have also provided a generic response sheet much like a story map that can be used with all nine chapters. There is a cut-&-paste chapter summary page and another page that requires the reader to use what they've learned about Ramona to answer some speculative questions. If you add them all up, I guess that makes twelve different activities. I hope I've answered your question to your satisfaction. - Jane

Hi Karen - I'm so glad you like the journal. I wil go ahead and place the calendar on the site seperately, but probably not until Thursday when I will have some free time. I will price it at $5.00. In the meantime, I have updated the rest of the journal, making small changes here and there - please take a look. Here's a thought - Maybe you and another primary teacher could pool your resources, say $5.00 each. You could replace your old calendar with the new one whie your friend gets to use the whole journal! I wouldn't normally suggest this option, but teachers deserve every break they can get! - Jane

What an intriguing possibility! It makes sense to provide this in a D'Nealian as well as a Zaner-Bloser format. Problem is, I no longer havde a D'Nealian font. I used to have one, but when I upgraded my operating system six months ago, it was lost. I am looking on font websites for a suitable substitute, and I hope to have this new version available by the weekend. Hi back at ya! I've never dealt with this problem before. It sounds like a delivery problem, as if there was some mismatch or glitch in the downloading process. I've described the problem to the site administrator and given him/her/them your buyer's name. They should contact one of us within 48 hours. (It has been my experience that they get back to you within the first 12 hours.) There are definitely ten pages in the unit and I hope you have them in your hot little hand soon! I must admit that I don't have a lesson plan as such. I think it would be a good idea to add one. Until then. let me give you this suggested time line for using the worksheets:
1. Start with the vocabulary page -page 2 of the download - These sentences are taken from the story. After familiarizing students with the words in the iceberg, use them to fill in the blanks.
2. Students should then "preview" the book: Look at the cover, read the words on the back or inside sleeve of the dust cover, and flip through the pictures. Then use the first page of the download to write down their predictions. Explain that you will return to check their predictions when they're done reading.
3. Students read the story in whatever way you wish to have them do it.
4. I recommend rereading the story as a group and completing the What Happened First page - page 3 of the download - as a group.
5. I also recommend you complete the story map as a group.
6.The character description page - page 6 of the download - encourages students to make connections between themselves and Tacky. I would recommend having the students fill this out individually and then share with a partner before sharing with the whole group.
7. This is an optional page that can be used with or without page 6 as the basis for a group discussion about the book.
8. The last page of the download is a vocabulary extension page.

There is only one questionnaire. It consists of 30 questions which can be run on the front and back of one 8.5 x 11 piece of paper. By purchasing the game you have permission to run one set of questionnairres for your classroom - i.e., if you have 25 kids, you may run 25 copies of the form. If another teacher is interested in using the game, I ask that they purchase their own copy. Please refer them back to the TpT website - I hope this answers your question.

The beauty of this log is that you can make it as many pages as you need it to be. I ran 20 copies of the two pages back to back and stapled them together with the cover. We used them until we ran out of pages. Then I just handed the students new booklets. I would meet with a reading group and assign them a chapter or a certain number of pages to read on their own. After reading they would select their own vocabulary words and reaction statements. I would assign the final activity and we would share and discuss our different responses. When students were reading independently they chose their own final activity and we would meet for an individual conference. I like your idea of giving students a log per week. I would imagine you wouldn't need to make them more than 5 or 6 pages each. I hope this answers your question. If I've misunderstood it or failed to answer it completely, please let me know.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I taught for a total of 32 years, mostly in second grade. After getting my Masters in special education, I spent 5 years as an LD Resource teacher before returning to the regular classroom. I have taught third grade and a multi-age primary class as well.
MY TEACHING STYLE
I have little if any patience for "data-driven instruction", the name my District gave to the practice of making sure students excel on NCLB mandated tests. It suggests that teachers never looked at the progress of their students and worked to fill in gaps before NCLB. Statistics have their place, but they should never be the primary measure of a teacher's competence.
HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT
I made it through thirty-two years of teaching without losing my love of teaching. I could not earn a higher honor.
MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY
I have a B.S. in Elementary Education from the University of Colorado, Boulder. I received my Masters in Special Education from the same institution seven years later. Towards the end of my careerl I became a CLIP -trained teacher, a variation on the Reading Recovery Program instituted by Marie Clay.
ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
I love to write, but my teaching strength is early literacy. I breed Labrador Retrievers. I am now retired and have no regrets as far as my career is concerned.
